In German ships are neutral gender, except when they're warships and are named after someone in which case they're referred to as masculine (ie, it's der Bismark, not die Bismark)
In German it could be all three, neutral, femal, or male gender, when you mention a ship.
If you just say "the ship" its "das Schiff", in that case it's neutral.
If you say the ships name f.e. "die Exxon Valdez", then its female
Except you say that you work on the ship, then it would be "ich arbeite auf der Exxon Valdez" (I work on the E.V.). In that case its male.Thats wrong
