Asp is three letters, easy to pronounce and is what I believed to be a well known name. It is very easy to sound out, I just asked my 4 year old, so why would people have so little upstairs that they are forced to spell it? Well I have just done some research and I can now say that it is because they have a development level of a 3 year old. Solved!

Dude. They're not spelling it because they don't know how to pronounce it. They're spelling it because they think it's an abbreviation. In the same way that people say "F T L" instead of "Faster than light". It seems to be because quite a few people do not know what an asp is, possibly because its natural habitat is quite small. That you believe it is a well known name is neither here nor there.

You're not demonstrating that other people are idiots. You're demonstrating a lack of willingness to give them the benefit of the doubt. It's not a good look.

I would have thought so too, but it seems that Roman history doesn't feature much in many education curricula these days. Plus it's not impossible for someone to just gloss over the detail of which species of snake it was.

I didn't claim that they did. I claimed that that is not the reason for pronouncing the letters. Those two propositions are not mutually exclusive. I am unable to provide research for an assumption that was not asserted.

However the balance of probability dictates that if they can muster up the guile to operate a keyboard, they can put three letters into a syllable. Having never witnessed people spelling out a one syllable word because they don't know the pronunciation, I am questioning the belief that this is what is happening when there is a simpler, more elegant hypothesis. It's just an application of the principle of Okham's Razor.

Or, to put it another way; you're outgunned mate. Let it lie.
