It's Asp, not ASP!

Dude, do you even DAT?

Digital Audio Tape? :p

It was called Aluminum first by the chap that discovered it, then he changed it to Aluminium. American spellings are different to British ones in general because Daniel Webster changed how words were spelt when he compiled his dictionary, he wanted to simplify English spellings.

IUPAC has agreed it is aluminium. As the internationally agreed naming standard of chemicals you'd best go along with them...

... And accept it is spelled "sulfur" as a concession.

Galnet uses ASP, so there you go. They also use Laser, not LASER so it all balances out [SUB]Z[/SUB]EN like. :)

I assume GalNet evolved from the Grauniad.

"Hey Professor - what does 'Ethics' mean?"

Oo, I know this one: Ethics is a county in England, north-east of London. It borders the counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to the north, Hertfordshire to the west, Kent across the estuary of the River Thames to the south and London to the south-west.

Just a little joke for our UK posters... ;)

+1 rep for the Grauniad mention! I wondered where the GalNet journalists trained at. :)

Ethics polytechnic of Aluminum?

You're right but I wouldn't hold your breath for some people to change, it's not just Asp but the quality of spelling and grammar on the forums seems to have plummeted in the last month or so.

I dunno wat yore on abowt .

I totally agree and mentioned it before. If some of the posts are a reflection of the future of the countries who post then God help us. (I'll get me pipe and slippers) ....again :)

ASP doesn't really bother me but I hate it when I can't find any turrents because my fraction doesn't have High Tech stations....

Asp is the name of a certain snake species in which case many ships in ED are named after various snake species. Many people say "ASP" instead of "Asp", but A-S-P doesn't stand for anything. For crying out loud I even see the let's play ED videos with the gamer saying A-S-P instead of Asp. Seriously, go Google up 'asp snake' for verification. Come on guys, this is ridiculous.

I didn't even notice some silly people writing it in all capital letters before you mentioned it. Next you know they're typing A.S.P*TM (just as silly)

Why do you hate America sir?

Urgh - that's a bannable word! They are universities - and you shall treat them with the respect they deserve!

<sniggers>

Sorry but I went to Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort university) and then Leeds Polytechnic (Now Beckett University), aah! yes you're right with the bling name change...respect...sniggers!

The thing is though - there was nothing wrong with polytechnics or colleges in the first place. Peeps went there to learn a trade or skills, and they usually came out having learned something useful that they could put to good use.

Then, something changed. Having no degree was suddenly seen as being some horrific disease, and everyone went berserk trying to make sure that every kid being thrown out of every school in the UK went on to university. It didn't matter if they weren't suited to that style of education, it didn't matter if they were rubbish and never learned a thing, it didn't matter if it cost the taxpayer a fortune.

All that mattered was that the UK could now suddenly boast this HUEG number of "graduates" and a massive seat of respected educators.

And look how it all turned out. McDonalds is full of them. So is the dole queue.

Anyway - it's still Asp and not ASP - and I love the sound of mine :)

So many other ships are named after snakes - Sidewinder, Adder, Viper, Cobra, Python, Anaconda and the new Fer-de-lance. Of course the Asp is also named after the snake -it's nonsensical to think otherwise
