Just bought a chieftain

Ok, so I just bought a chieftain. I only had 22 mil, not counting my aspX cuz I don’t want to sell it. So I’m looking for some good builds for my new chieftain. I’m not great at outfiting for combat at all. I just threw a bunch of burst lasers on it and a Hull reinforcement package. So if anyone could provide me with some good combat builds (or maybe tell me I’m wrong and need to buy a different ship for combat?). I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks

On a budget huh? Can you afford a few rebuys? If not, park it and go make more credits with the asp. If you are just looking for a quick slap it together and go build vs NPCs and don't have any engineered modules, I have some suggestions. Its shields are not good. Expect them to fail so get bi weaves and they at least will come back before your hull is destroyed. If cash is tight, get all B rated core internals. They are only slightly worse performers than A rated but are much cheaper and have higher integrity. Speaking of integrity, you need it. At least 2 hull reinforcements and 2 module reinforcements. Point defense, chaff and 2 shield boosters will help keep you alive. For guns, just use whatever you like and have enough power for. Cannons or rails in the small slots help mitigate the low damage and piercing smalls usually have.

Yeah I was planning on making another 10 mil with my asp before using it (it’ll only take me about an hour). Thanks for the tips. Btw, what are shield boosters? Optional or utility mount?

That's an alright starting point. It depends on what you are trying to fight. Thermal doesn't do well against most hulls. I haven't tried the Intertial Impact mod on burst lasers yet, but it seems like an interesting idea.

Maybe throw some missiles into the medium hardpoint under the nose?

Maybe swap out one of the big burst laser for a multicannon?

The small slots work great for lasers to strip shields.

IMHO, the Chieftain shines as a close combat brawler and especially makes good use of powerplay weapons like the Cytoscrambler. If that's your style, here is my build, you might want to aim for something similar.

I can pass on some theories I use to build my combat ships. Especially the iChief:

1. Use a 6C Bi-Weave shield. I put Reinforced w/ fast recharge. The iChief's shield modifier is low. In any decent fight your shields will likely drop. The recharge rate of B-Weave is more beneficial than some extra shield strength up front.

2. Because you'll use Bi-Weaves you should put one HRP, and two MRPs in the military slots. When your shields do drop the MRPs will help to protect your canopy and weapons. You can use engineering on your hull to help with that, where MRPs are the only way to protect your modules.

3. I primarily use gimballed Pulse Lasers and Frag Cannons. I can fly evasively, and stay on target at the same time. While the efficient w/ Phasing or Scramble fire away, almost constantly, I can drop spike damage with the frags w/ Overcharged as the opportunity arises. I find this to be a great strategy in such an agile ship.

4. Use a Charge enhanced PD. This will go a long way to keep your lasers firing. The idea behind my build is being able to keep near constant laser fire on your target, and use the frags to strip hull points rapidly.

5. As mentioned above, the agility of the iChief is it"s major attribute. Use it. Of course attempt to stay out of your target's firing arc, but if you do find yourself face to face, use your thrusters to avoid a head on approach. Keep moving in at least two axis at all times, unless your target is flying directly away from you. This will mitigate your incoming damage.

I wish you success with your iChief. As a qualification, this relates to PvE only. I am pretty successful in RES and CZs using the advove advice.

Fly crazy Commander. o7
