I got a refund for the game back in December on the basis that I was affected by Offline. I travel a lot and own two other houses abroad that do not have Internet due to their remoteness, and therefore dropping offline really impacted my ability to play. I tend to only buy offline playable games for these reasons.
Nonetheless, up to that point I followed the game quite closely and did play some of the last beta, and I was really shocked that FD were seriously going to release the game for XMas. I understand the commercial pressure they were under to do so; having committed to it in their shareholder report they really had to release it then or risk a sell-off, which given the tiny number of shares in circulation would have caused them a lot of trouble. But, in no way was the game ready. What I saw of it I liked as a framework for a game, but it was clearly unfinished and all felt rather kludged together. More like a series of promising demos hung together by a tenuous thread, rather than what we'd call a cohesive game. And some choices were just so old fashioned I felt rather embarrassed for Frontier. Yes, we had all these people telling us there was this amazing secret build hidden in the wings, but they were quite clearly irrational with massive confirmation bias.
The main issue I could see in the game was a complete lack of any strategic (or even tactical) challenge. I didn't play much at all due to my location\online issue above, and yet I amassed a lot of money without trying at all. And then the question was, what do I do? Well, had I not suffered from the offline issues I could have carried on that trajectory and earned even more money, but even with the limited amount of playtime I invested in the game I was already bored, so I could see that would not do. Sure, I felt flying about the universe was a great feeling, a quite relaxing feeling, rather like fiddling with a Newton's Cradle on my desk while pondering a business deal - but not really a game with any depth or draw. We have this small list of commodities to trade, these predictable NPCs, this dull looking (but well rendered) universe where everything is cut and paste and what, three space stations? And then the elephant in the room which is the horrid multiplayer we were forced to adopt by removal of offline, and yet adds nothing at all to the experience, in fact in beta it detracted from the experience by being so unwieldy (I am assuming all the grouping and Wings etc is in the game now and those issues are gone).
So you know, this vast game in terms of planets procedurally deployed and yet no strategic elements to the game, and even the tactical elements got old fast. So I totally see where the OP is coming from and fingers crossed for those people who are in for the long-haul, that FD start getting some juicy content out there fast because, a sand box with no sand is just a massive empty box.
My advice to the OP, leave the game for 3-6 months, focus on something else (no shortage of amazing games out there right now) and when you come back you may be pleasantly surprised. It's often the way when something is a botched release, you need to leave the game to breathe a little before it's of any interest to anyone except the most ardent of fans.
As ED currently stands it's a game of vast scale but tiny scope and vision. But it may not always be so limited.
