Just for fun: Guess the Desert DLC roster!

I guess it depends on where you live. But globaly i think coatis are more associated with SA, same as bison, beavers and moose are considered NA animals even if they also found in europe
Yep, as an European I would sign this regarding to the Coati. As an European Mooses and Beavers are more European animals to me. Especially Sweden is heavily linked to the Moose. The Bison is North American whereas the Wisent is European to me.

I'm guessing it will be a Sahara pack with animals from the Sahara desert, sahel, and maybe some from the nearby Danakil Desert.
  1. Dromedary Camel
  2. African Crested Porcupine
  3. Black Rhino
  4. Saharan Horned Viper
  5. Hamadryas Baboon
  6. Secretary Bird
  7. and 8. Pick Two: Serval, Jackal, Spurred Tortoise, Honey Badger
Addax and Somali Wild also have decent chances.

I kind of hope this is the case, so a true "desert" animal pack could include species from other regions:
  1. Middle East: Arabian Oryx, Sand Cat, maybe another ungulate?
  2. Argentina: Collared Peccary, Mara, Rhea, Guanaco
  3. Mexico: Bighorn Sheep, Gray Fox or Coyote
  4. Asia: Blackbuck, Saiga
  5. Australia: Rock Wallaby, Perentie, Echidna
... to name a few, and a desert pack would probably still include one or two from Africa that was missed if this is a Sahara Pack.

A Sahara pack could really take the pressure off of a desert pack.

Oh. Uh… It certainly is the DLC of all time.

No blackbuck, no coati, no birds?

I love ungulates, but these choices are… I mean, the Dama gazelle is so boring that I didn’t even think to put it on my nightmare list. Planet Beige.

That’s ok, you can’t love literally every pack I suppose. The models are still absolutely stunning and incredibly realistic, and I do love that they gave us a piebald camel.

Barring the lack of the baboon, this pack is actually perfect for me. Haven't been this happy with a pack in a while

Yeah even if they were really set on 5 ungulates, there where cooler options than addax and dama gazelle cough cough blackbuck

They didn't name it the Sahara Pack, but it seems to be that anyway? Hopefully a desert pack will come later with stuff from other regions, especially Argentina and Oceania, and I could still picture a decent "Safari" pack with some other stuff from Africa: Serval, Secretary Bird/Grey Crowned Crane, Baboon, Honey Badger, etc. I think they might be saving the Blackbuck for an India Pack??

The person that comes closest will win a DM of a photo of Rock Hyrax bullying a Nubian Ibex baby I took last weekend.
Since no one actually won, you can share the picture here, just an advise..

Im actually a little surprised its not just called the sahara pack

Honestly I never cared for Arabian oryx since I don't have that experience with them that you got. But it would've been a whole lot better then the dama gazelle. Sadly I feel like it's lost its chance now though.

Why do you say that? The Arabian oryx seems superficially very similar to the scimitar-horned oryx and gemsbok to me. The dama gazelle looks completely unique from anything in the game. I’m hoping that becomes more apparent to those less familiar with them once we actually see them, and people are able to appreciate just how large they are in comparison to the springbok and Thomson’s.

The dama gazelle just looks like a whiter Springbok which I could also say about the oryx to the gemsbok but I just find oryx to be a lot cooler looking. Also they litterally add an alternative that I like more than it with the addax in the same pack. The Arabian oryx at least gives us an ungulate for an area without one.

Heres my wishfullfillment pack:
  • Dromedary: We all know its coming and i got no problem with that. Very versatile animal, from an underrepresented area, domestic, posterchild of deserts and especally desert travel, im sure of any animal thats "just" an ungulate it will be by far one with the most varried ways to fit them into our zoos
  • Hamadryas Baboon: Imo the real bread winner, baboons are missing badly in the roster and some arabian representation would be very nice
  • African spurred tortoise: We need more reptiles and a desert tortoise thats not only super common in zoos but also not an island species would be a great cmone for this pack. It also might pave the way for a giant tortoise upsizing, which would be much approved aswell
  • Collared Peccary: one of the few animals rivaling the dromedary in utility, theyd cover na deserts, central america and tropical south america covering the small ungulate niche, something much needed for those areas
  • Burrowing Owl: My prefered bird species for this pack, covering allmost all of non tropical south america and the deserts and grasslands of north america and could easily be a habitat animal. Theyd fit great with prarie dogs and the armadillo and finally give na a bird
  • Patagonian Mara: the only cold desert animal for this pack and among the only missing sa animals more important than more monkeys. They ate extremly common in zoos, feature a unique rig and would be a large step for non tropical SA
  • Shortbeaked echidna: I love my all terrain vehicle and as the outback is on australian soil we got echidnas living there. Theyd be super versatile as they live literally everywhere in australia and would add something very fun and uniqe. I also picked it over the YFR wallaby, cause we allready got a wallaby last animal pack and i dont see them repeating sadly.
  • Budgies (WE): i think everyone likes that. Another domestic and another australian animals with tons of colormorphs, also birds. Would be the first and props only time when an exhibit animal would be my favorite of a pack.

Is it the most realistic?
Hell no i didnt include the marketing kitty, but it would for sure be perfect for me
When you get 1 out of 8 and it wasnt even one you were passionate about :/
Oh well better luck next time

I mean, preferences are totally fine of course and the unrepresented region thing is also a good point. I think calling it a whiter springbok is selling it short, though - the dama has a striking long neck and is taller overall. I dunno, I just think it’s really neat and is low key one of the species I’m most excited for in this pack.

Its not that i didnt want it, it just wasnt in my prediction/dream pack cause i prefer the short beaked echidna as a small spikey thing and it didnt fit my definition of ballanced regions with the other picks, but now that we have it im not complaining, easily the best animal of the pack
Honestly I love this new pack, but I agree it could be more balanced. Had I picked the roster I'd go:
  1. Addax
  2. African crested porcupine
  3. African wild ass
  4. Dromedary
  5. Sand cat
  6. Black rhino -> Hamadrayas baboon
  7. Dama gazelle -> Arabian oryx
  8. Horned viper (E)
And in a more ambitious change in the base game: Springbok -> Dama gazelle.

The Dama gazelle is similar but better in every way to the springbok.

I'd keep the rhino for a safari pack.

I don’t hate the new pack, but man. I would have made this my #1 pack if it was true.
