Last Day

Remember Logan's Run?

Tomorrow, I change my ISP. By cutting my internet costs by nearly 75%, it gives me some desperately needed room in my fixed budget.

What does this have to do with Elite?

It's the last day I can use my high-speed internet to download bulky game files.

So, I'm buying Odyssey. While I can still download it rapidly.

I'll find out if it runs on my old box, then, if it doesn't, I will get my Steam Refund.

I thought it ran fine for the CEO on really old hardware?
Depends on your definition of really old hardware. I think the DB's had a
which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM,
to test on.

We do know the minimum specs Odyssey going to have to run is the PC equivalent to an Xbox-One and PS4 where 30fps would be acceptable. That seems to be a major challenge to me but they seem quite confident about update 8 (Maybe October?)

Old hardware does not necessarily mean slower hardware.
GTX980 is slightly faster than GTX1060-6gb - which is the recommended card for EDO.
And GTX1080 is faster than GTX2060

Not to make you jealous or anything, but I refused to pay to upgrade my connection for years - the one I had would support Netflix just fine, and that's all I needed.

Eventually I got upgraded for free, I presume because it wasn't worth my ISP's while to continue maintaining a few slower connections.

But then I live in the UK. I wouldn't mind living in the USA, but not because of its ISPs, about whom I never hear anything good.

In another universe I helped build the internet - I remember being so proud of the 16mbps rollout in London Engerland 20 years ago, only for my Paris Francerland opposite to point out they had 100mbps. One man's drink is another (binary identification here)'s poison...............

About 6 months ago my household was using 4G internet, it was just woeful especially when the kids were all at home in the first lockdown. Then we upgraded to fast fibre, got free Netflix, and are paying less $ every month than we were before. It's made such a huge difference in this lockdown, a lot less frustrating when trying to connect to the internet.

Old ISP: 1 GB fiber.

It was above minimums.

And, I won't be able to afford a replacement for at least a year. So, the screaming that I should have better stuff is wasted. I'm not sinking two months rent into a box for one game.

So, now, I tried it.

Now, I can't be accused of not trying. And, I was able to do it at no financial risk. Big difference for the FOMO.

Now, I know for sure that Oddy is not for my old box. The graphics looked fine- they just stuttered along at twelve frames per second.

I love Horizons. :)

I find this is a non-sensical reason to provoke a Steam refund. The performance of EDO is no mystery and the difference in connection speed is hardly a factor to consider.
I think you misunderstood the OP - he took the chance to quickly download and try EDO on his PC while it was less of a faff with fibre - it'd take longer with his new connection.

You left out the only metric that actually matters. How dusty was it?

I got that. But I don't think it is a big deal downloading a game on a 200Mbit connection.

Fair enough - I never had access to fiber and have to put up with a much worse connection than 200Mbit (realistically it's usually down 30ish, up 15ish based on speedtest/over wifi), and EDO, which I had to install directly via the Frontier launcher, took me several hours to download on launch day. If it takes a few minutes via fiber I can see the appeal to give it a quick go, though not sure I'd make a thread about it :p
