LaveCon 2018 QA quick recap

...The lighting improvements look amazing, and holy frack at those ice planets!!! :eek:

Agreed, I was very impressed by all I saw, doubly so given it all has another 5-6 months of development time to improve, and of course there's more to be revealed.

As an aside, I do wonder how coincidental the graphics improvements are with the Mac (sadly) being dropped.

Q4 will see the sys reqs being upped for pc as well AFAIK, so what used to be the min reqs for Horizons become the min reqs for the entire game. It seems clear this is why Mac is being dropped.

Worth knowing thanks - anyway, methinks it's time for some extra RAM at least.

Can't really see the system requirement been increased for the PC since the game has to have playable frame rates on the consoles. The ice planets will probably require more processing power, but the guy said the new lighting model basically has no performance hit.

That's not actually confirmed. I think when we asked DX10 was still confirm for miminal requirement. Mac was dropped because of Apple announcement of OpenGL being discountenued at all on MacOS. FD is more than capable to extend OpenGL renderer, but Apple just dropping API...shareholders would start to ask why FD would put time and money on platform that is dying as gaming one.

But I hope they do not mess it up by making each drone occupy a ton of cargo space, thus requiring large cargo capacities, followed by endless surface scaveging (an activity I dread even more than a colonoscopy) for synthesis, or worse require materials found only in the bubble (hello heat sinks). I would have preferred some kind of new scanner functionality instead of consumables, mostly to avoid these "possible" issues.

This is my concern too. Making limpets a mandatory exploration tool would make a lot of ships unable to explore anymore due to a lack of internal space. I really hope Frontier has kept this in mind during development and accounted for it.

I asked Ed about that, and he said no, the requirements are not going up.

I don't think they will be limpets. Limpets are large because they have to interact with something. I could possibly see the DSS having an actual turret which then fires of the drones. Anyway, looking very interesting.

Mining looks good too.

I just wondering is that technically possible? I mean theoretically yes, but how it is explained from science :)

I just watched that clip and it looks very cool though :D

Actually they have delivered huge majority on their promises.

Not really. I know you feel the need to defend everything. But don't tell me not to feel sceptical over the last 4 years.

Hopefully. Sandro said we will need to replenish the probes. I'd like to see it work more like AFMU ammo, where the probes are stored in the DSS with a counter and can be replenished directly via synthesis. That would be ideal and extremely awesome.

Well, Sandro called then probes, not probe limpets, so I remain positive.

* Mining
+ Will have three stages - regular one (which we have now), a bit deeper mining, and splitting up asteroids. New, interesting stuff can be found and experienced (blowing up asteroids might end up being a bit risky);

That's sounds OK.

Mining is a bit simplistic. And boring. But cathartic in a fashion. And yet, also quite irritating.

In short, it depends on the mood whether it is an irritating grind or a relaxing by the numbers grind.

A bit like so many other aspects of the game. So much depth is needed in so manay aspects....

The proposed set up sounds interesting, but it also needs to tie into exploration....you should need to hunt for and find the gold rush asteroids.
And mining needs to be more involved. The idea of "gas mining" by flying your ship through the upper atmosphere of a Gas Giant still holds some attraction. And varying the mining technique depending on the type of asteroid you are mining, as in the DDF.

A lot of good ideas there. I would like to see a beacon that will keep the instance "active" so you can come back to it.

* Exploration
+ Drones - enough said. Launching will take physics in mind and will enable exploration with multi crew;
+ Drones will give full map, which will show all interesting POIs so players doesn't have to 'peek' interesting stuff;
+ And that's not all, more hinted to come;

More drones? And that bit about multicrew sounds more like adding complexity for the sake of it, rather than because it is needed. Don't get me wrong - more multicrew stuff is needed. Exploration also needs to be more interesting than activating a scanning device. I supposed drones have their place, but I was hoping for something a bit more varied and involved. Maybe even some dedicated exploration ships - or even mining

Overall...it sounds good. But, a lot of stuff FD has done sounds good until we see it implemented.
