Let's Try Put Emotions Aside and Be Specific about Odyssey Development State for Consoles

To me, it seems like this has nothing to do with FDev, at some point. They would like this to go to consoles, for sure. But as far as I know, games have to be at a certain level of performance to make it onto those consoles. That means FDev could say to you they intend the game to be ready for next week on consoles, but until they surpass those performance requirements, it wont make it there.
I'd say performance has increased quite a bit in the last couple patches, but my guess is it has a ways to go before being console ready.
On PC, Horizons runs smooth 60+ fps all the time, but on my PS4, that means jagged, stuttery gameplay at times. Odyssey runs at 60+ at some times on my PC, but in a lot of places below that. So, I'd guess if it ran on the PS4, it'd be jagged and stuttery quite a lot.
But, do I think they'll get to consoles with Odyssey? Yes. But it'll be a few months away for sure.
Why dont they comment much on it? Well, what if they never get past the minimum performance required to be on the consoles? What if they pass enough to be on XBox, but not PS4? Would that cause a headache? Not easy situations here.

If you hadn't noticed elements of EDO got ported to the console version in update 9. That seems to have come with a collection of bugs but nonetheless actually represents progress.

(Ok the number of times I've had to reboot or find workarounds is frustrating but it's moving in the right direction.)

A major issue of this wait on console based on most comments I see seems to be that people really want a timescale. You can have a plan with milestones, but especially with each update seemingly not doing entirely what it supposed to do and additional time being needed to fix the fixes, this isn't going to be enough. Personally I'd like to see a beta on PS4 to demonstrate how far off a real release this is, but this isn't going to be a productive use of time (I'm sure it would quiet a few voices though).

I'm seeing it as an opportunity to finish off ships in Horizons so I don't have that to do along with the on foot equipment upgrading and a chance to have a look at other games.

Personally I think FDev will deem it ready for sale on console too early and with some significant unresolved issues. I wouldn't want to rush them further than they are already.

The problem FD have, is if they release any info, such as a timeline and they are forced to change for any reason (even reason beyond their control) there will be those who will use the "But you said" argument.

As proof of that, I have lost count of the number of times the vid of DB talking about the game years ago and what he said compaired to what we got and people are still going "But DB said".

Even with the best of intentions sometime stuff happens and plans change... with games and in life, but some people just don't get that.

Odyssey was released in such a state that right now its impossible to release on consoles, especially base PS4 / XB.

If it did, you could not patch as fast on consoles since each update needs to be signed off by MS / Sony, so this would be even slower.

(Tinfoilish) a lot of content we are seeing is not stuff magicked out of thin air- FD overshot time wise and all the 'new' stuff is cut content.

In short, FD can't fight three moving battles over three platforms, so they are finishing EDO for PC and then consoles get it- meaning you wait but its not CP2077 messy.

As customers we can't compel Frontier to do anything. They will have their production plan mapped out to every dotted i and crossed t and that's what they'll do.
They've told us, once, that Oddysey on console is suspended indefinitely and we won't hear anything else until either the official Oddysey console announcement (which you can be sure will be announced beforehand) or we're told that console development is cancelled.
Telling us that console Oddysey development is cancelled isn't something they ever need to tell us, so if that really was the case expect them to say something like 'suspended indefinitely.'

Ok, we don't dictate game rules after we paid already, but we still can affect as we already have seen with content of updates 6-9. They even fixed a mass of universal limpet controllers.
But you see, that wasn't forcing FD.

Nobody had the proverbial gun to their head.

It could have just as easily been ignored.

If you want an example of player demands being ignored, just search "Cobra Mk IV"

The advantages for Frontier in having EDO on consoles are a happy-ish (no one is ever really happy it seems) player base, income from sales of EDO and ARX sales by adding consoles to EDO, and happy investors that they're reaching more customers and making more money. So of course they want EDO on consoles. Right now though all of their resources are on handling the fire that is EDO on PC. Have you ever had two projects at work? You're intently focused on getting project 1 finished and haven't looked at or considered anything about project 2. If someone were to come and ask you when project 2 is going to be done, you're going to say "I don't know, I haven't looked at it yet." You can't tell them when project 2 is going to be done because your entire focus is on project 1. Until your boss says project 1 is far enough along that you can take a breather, only then are you going to start looking into project 2 to see where it stands and what needs to be done. This is very similar to what's going on with EDO for consoles with the only difference being that the progress you make on project 1 helps push you that much further ahead on project 2.

I am with you, the waiting sucks and there have been post after post of people pleading, rationalizing, yelling, etc... to the CMs for answers and they're just not going anywhere. Here's my prediction, in the next few months we're going to see the start of this "parity" they've talked about. We're starting to see some with the UI already, but the next big change is going to be the planetary tech. Planetary tech is going to come to Horizons and then what's going to happen....people are going to complain. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the new planetary tech isn't as good as Horizons (at least it wasn't). No deep canyons, repeating patterns, and from what I've seen in some YT videos, just not that impressive. So, planetary tech comes to Horizons and then there will be an uproar over replacing our "good" Horizons planets with the desperately needs attention EDO planets.

While waiting sucks we have to keep in mind, there's not a thing we can do about it. So, enjoy EDH for as much as you're able. If you get bored, move on to another game and check back in a couple months to see what, if any, progress has been made on the move towards console.

It’s not the first one and not the last one post in every possible media that has Elite Dangerous in its name. But I will try to put my emotions aside and instead of asking “WHEN WILL YOU RELEASE ODYSSEY ON CONSOLES?????” (as many PC players see it right now) and be more specific and constructive.

You all know this problem of “postponed indefinitely” and copy-pasted answers like “when we’ll have news” from official sources.

So what I (as an actual software engineer) would like to know about Odyssey?

We need a clear Odyssey readiness criteria

Answers like “when it will be ready” and “when it will be optimized” aren’t concrete answers because it’s impossible to measure progress and success.

There are two main directions in this:

Technical state

The answer like “It should run on Intel 8080 with 16KBytes RAM and with 1KByte VRAM with 60 FPS but now it’s only 25 FPS” is specific and gives both success criteria and progress, so it would be a nice one answer.

Gameplay state

The answer like “We want to completely implement players' driven economy, landable ELW, cities life simulation and 100500 new ships and SRVs before starting work on consoles” also could be a good one, because it again shows success criteria and progress.

As a console player I don’t really ask for promises and specific dates, only milestones and state.

But the fact that we constantly see updates for Odyssey that include not only bug fixes and optimization but also new content and at the same time they’re completely silent and completely avoid even talking about consoles is quite depressing.

And now I will give my completely conspirological answer to such silence and avoidance:

FDev don’t care about console players willing to give us a completely ready product - they don’t want to tell us that it won’t happen because it won’t be looking good from the investors point of view to cut ~10% of players base by dropping ED support on consoles.

I am a PC player, so what will I have if I support this?

What we all get from asking these concrete questions is more transparency on what will happen with the game in future.
Don’t you want to know what you should expect soon and what to expect later?
Don’t you want to know if the bug or game mechanic that annoys you for years will be ever addressed?

Together we players as essentially people who pay their salaries have a right to dictate the game rules and push the game to a direction that we want as a community.

The following video isn't mine but has some more details:

UPDATE 1: About the power of the community
Do you remember what happened to EA when they added gameplay affecting lootboxes to Battlefront 2? If gamers would eat it silently, we'd have now all fullprice games containing such lootboxes. Only because of gamers, EA had to change the game and never do it again in order to save their Star Wars license.

UPDATE 2: About the power of the community (continued)
Why FDev continued development after Update 5? Because of players and no one else. If you all would take it silently, it won't be Update 6 and further updates including upcoming FC interiors.

UPDATE 3: About switching to PC
I personally could switch to PC, but grinding all the engineers again just to get to the same point doesn't seem to me a good perspective. If it was a cross-progress implemented, then it could be an option.

Just play the other game on pc bro.
Elites dying on pc. Dead on console.

Either except what you have, or move on. There will be no new content for console

If a company is using their own money, they can change a game as much as they like. However, if they run a KickStarter and extract money on the basis of a development plan (regardless of how long ago it was), then not surprisingly, they are held to account.
