Because the point of the lifetime pass is to give FD upfront money, if they do what you asked no one would purchase the lifetime pass. It has zero benefit to FD to upgrade people to the lifetime pass. All lifetime passes are two edge swords for MMO's, sure they get a lot of upfront money, but in the long run they get less. For instance I purchased the lifetime pass back when it was $50, that means that this first season covers the cost and its now payed for. So now FD will not get any money from me for every single season that comes after this next one. If they run the 10 years they are talking about they lost ~$450 in income from me. Assuming you purchase the lifetime pass now, FD has lost $200 over the course of those 10 years per person that purchases it.

If FD allowed an upgrade then FD would get nothing after the 4th year and would not have funds to continue to make seasons.

Exactly.

At this point paying 3 expansions upfront when the first one has not even get released is a bet (a very risky one btw).

If things go well, we might end up paying 175$ for 500$ worth of content, but if things go wrong, we might end up paying that amount for two expansions and some exclusive bull as a compensation.

It's kinda a leap of faith.

Hi, I'm new to the forum (but long-term Elite fan since the 80s) and need some advice. Due to being busy I missed out on the Kickstarter etc. but have been following progress all along. However there is still some confusion about the LEP. I currently am waiting to finish studies before buying a top of the range Mac but I'm looking to buy the LEP now (limited offer). My main question is, will I be able to download PC versions (for when I partition my Mac and put Windows on it) and Mac versions in the future (next year) if I buy the LEP now?

Also, I'm aware that it offers all future expansions, but does it come with any other perks at all? Like, can I get a hard copy of the game?

Does anyone also foresee any issues by me buying the LEP now (nearly a year before I'm going to play the game - it's kind of a trusting investment you see)? The upside to this I suppose is I'm one of those people who can wait patiently for ED to continue developing.

Finally, I've seen some people saying they got the LEP for £120, but it's up at £130... Can I still get it for £120?

Thanks in advance.

I believe you will be able to download both versions, but only have one or the other running at a time.

Second question: They might already own the game and they got the loyality discount.

Just did the same (£120 with the discount here in the UK), even though I'm a Mac user and I'll have to wait in line. Just take my money, dammit!

Please excuse my ignorance, but how did you get it with the discount? If it's because you already bought the game, why would you then spend so much more money on the LEP? (Did you not get the Kickstarter package or one like that which offers expansions?)
It's just I'm trying to decide whether to buy the LEP now before even having a system to play ED on (which will be next year).

1. I believe you can download both PC and MAC client from the same account, but cannon play in both on the same account at the same time;

2. You will only get digital download game clients only, no other physical goods or perks with the purchase of LEP (except you can play ED now instead of waiting for Horizon to launch);

3. I bought Premium Beta Package which include LEP for $150, i would say "money well spent". There's always a risk that FD will pull a plug of ED if its not successful in the future and not getting your money worth. However, i believe that ED will last for a while (at least 4-5 years).

4. Those that receives discount are player that already owned ED.

It's just I'm trying to decide whether to buy the LEP now before even having a system to play ED on (which will be next year).

Some of the backers did not back the LEP option. Some of the player that bought ED later didn't buy LEP when it was offered in the FD store. Some of the players simply bought ED after the LEP was taken off the FD store (people that bought Ed from Steam).

Gully_Foyle and M.E.A.T I appreciate your quick replies, thanks.

Okay I'll buy the LEP now then. Ever since the first Elite, me and my mate always had faith in DB, so I'm pretty confident that ED will always do well. I just hope I'll be able to load it all up next year and the account doesn't go dormant and disappear after so long without use :p

But you'd think they'd throw a T-shirt or at least a key ring in for that amount of cash wouldn't you. :D

But you've had a year's head start... A year. Almost anyway.

I haven't. I had one week.

It's a shame that my first post to the forums couldn't be a more positive one, but I feel the same as Captain Kirkby, but probably even more disappointed!

I bought the game one week before Horizons was announced. I played every Elite game on the PC, and some from other platforms like ArcElite, and then obviously real life took over. When I learnt there was a new Elite game I was excited, and then seriously gutted to discover I'd missed the kickstarter, and all the alpha and beta stages, pre-order etc and all the bonus content they include - something that I will forever miss and never have access to.

Anyway, I'm a grown up, I didn't cry for long, I got on and bought the game as it appeared to me that Frontier's policy was to reward people for getting involved sooner rather than later, e.g. Kickstarter backers have lots of exclusive bonus content; those who later purchased alpha and beta access through the store paid the same as kickstarter backers but received less bonus content; pre-orders received bonuses that people who ordered after release did not get, etc.

Well, it appears I was wrong about the policy, and I therefore have to wonder what else I'll be wrong about if I actually but the LEP.

A simple solution would be to have two prices for the expansion pass: One for new players, and another for existing players that was £40 cheaper, this would have been fair. Frontier could still do this and reimburse existing players who have already bought the LEP. If Frontier did this I would buy it immediately (it's in my store basket ready to be bought).

Have you talked to Support about that?

Hi Hootman,
Yep, in fact twice, because as a new player I was wrong-footed by the Horizons options AND by the expansion pass (maybe experienced players were too). Support were ace with my query about Horizons but for the expansion pass they've basically said that they knew there was going to be some inequality but that they didn't feel there was an option, so they picked day X and if the game was bought before day X then tough. I've left the ticket open in the hope that they'll reconsider, but I think it's cut and dried. I'll have to spend the next few months watching developments and seeing what's happening before deciding if it's worth my while to buy the LEP.

To be fair, you're getting (potentially) 10 years worth of $40-$60 expansions. That's fairly significant :p.

Okay I had a bit more discussion with the support wing. I amazed they're able to answer questions so quickly!

I asked what would happen in the following situation:

Player 1 buys ED then before Horizons is released for beta they buy the LEP.

On the same day that player 1 buys ED Player 2 just buys the LEP.

At the moment there is only ED, Horizons has not been released yet, so both players have exactly the same content and same entitlement to future content, they will always be playing the same game for the same amount of time. But Player 1 has paid €25/£20 more than Player 2 (taking into account the loyalty discount).

There's obviously Player 3 as well, who like me bought ED just before Horizons and the LEP we're announced. Player 3 has had a few days extra to play ED, but otherwise content and entitlement are the same.

As usual, I didn't have to wait long for a considered reply from support. They explained that the only real variable in this situation is their refunds policy, mainly, what kind of purchase was made, when this purchase was made, and whether the product is used/returnable. There is a structure to the policy, but they do judge each case individually. In my case, purchaser of ED shortly before Horizons was announced and considering a potential purchase of the LEP, they couldn't refund me anything extra.

I've considered the explanation from Frontier and overall I think it's reasonable - after all, how many new players are buying the LEP outright without first trying ED? (Support told me there are a few, but not many).

Cheers all

This would be a pleasant surprise. I am in same situation as OP and didn't expect current season beta to be available as I think when I purchased it was promoted as access to horizons beta and all subsequent ones. Looking at store page now it appears the description is slightly different and it may indeed contain current season beta access, although presumably I may need to unlink steam account.

Hopefully I may indeed see you all in CQC early and you can watch awestruck as I teach you all how to accidentally boost into solid walls and do the sidewinder equivalent of pinball through the structures.

I have a question for all betas (not just cqc beta, sorry op).

If I have lifetime, will my progress in each beta save with the expansion/patch realease? I mean, will it be transferred to regular game?

Thank you!!!
