Elite / Frontier Low Poly revamped Elite ships

Hi all, thought I'd have a go at doing some low poly reworks of the Elite ships in order to maybe make my own ship pack one day. All I've done is make a quick model of the original ship, then in the next layer I've used that silhouette to make a newer looking ship with slightly more polygons. The original ships only had about a dozen polys, whereas these have about 150-250, although the Python is nearer 550 right now. That's still low poly for a game, and very low poly for a tv/film model. Here's what I've done today, an Adder, Krait, Python and either a Sidewinder or Mamba. I still haven't decided which it will be yet. Scaled small it's a nice fighter like the Sidewinder, and slightly larger it could be a Gecko or Mamba.

Let me know what you think. Obviously these have no image maps or shaders applied, just the basic shape. I know I can export these as .obj format, but I cant apply any image maps to them that will make it through the conversion from Lightwave. I may have to ask for help or learn another package.

Oh yes, very nice! :)

I do love the clean look of bare polygon models... just showing my age there I think ;)

Yes, yes it does. :D

I think the Python by far the best looking of the larger ships, graceful and clean looking at the same time. When you make very flat, blank polygon models of the ships though you want to add a little detail, and doing that in a way that doesn't interfere too much with the basic shape of the thing is a bit difficult. You end up nicking little bits out or adding little bits, and then you go a bit Star Wars with it.

Go Kenny Go!

Yeah the python looks like a Star Destroyer, but thats not a bad thing :)
Would have made it more interesting for me on them many hours that I followed them giving them jip with my beam laser while they fruitlessly bobbed up and down in the spectrum version of Elite.

Please post the textured ones asap.

No I agree - I like the Starwars-esq look - it's exactly how I had imagined it as well - perhaps not with the dorsal tower tho.

Don't let our opinions sway you tho!!!

Yep looks really nice, I like the clean lines as well, keeps it simple.

Good work there :)

I might go up to about 1000 polygons on these so I can add a bit more detail and curves, but I do want to keep them small. Even if some peoples PCs can handle many thousands of polys at once it always helps to keep it as streamlined as you can.

My association is more Tron than Star Wars, but I don't think that is a bad thing either. Such clear shapes reminiscent of early 3D graphics have their own specific aesthetics I think.

Oh yeah, now that one looks like it was from "V" with a bit of "Space 1999" thrown in, keep em comming.

i like it, lots of polys left to the limit* :D (if you counted tri's, but anyway)

*which is more a loose one and the game runs proper even with multiple "highpoly" models at one time, but i think further use of additional bump maps and such per effects.fx will limit this additionally, which would be nice if one could work that out properly, i'm willing to release a update of my courier but first i want to be shure how to handle additional maps with effects.fx in ffed3d.

There's a thing. I dont have FFE3D because i dont have FFE. I bought it when it first came out, but that was many moons ago and I dont have it now. I understand it's available as shareware, but I'm unable to find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get it, so I can then run the upgrades?
