Make engineering materials something you can lose/steal (hear me out)

Love the PVP in the game but outside of roleplay or sheer boredom, there's not a single actual mechanic that encourages PVP. That being said, while we have a mechanic for losing bounties, exploration data cargo upon death, those things are relatively inconsequential to how valuable engineering materials are. Plus, players can't steal bounties or exploration data, and if they steal your cargo it's usually not worth much anyway given how easy it is to make money.

Maybe just after collecting the materials they sit in a temporary state in your storage where if you die you can lose them and whoever kills you can take them. Once you make it to a station or carrier they become part of your permanent inventory like normal.

This would encourage PVP in a way that actually has direct consequences and benefits to the players. There are tons of players that either do pirating or just straight up ganking, there might as well be a reason for it.

This would certainly put the "danger" in elite dangerous. And no I'm not saying it should be an escape from tarkov clone. Just want some more intense moment to moment gameplay to keep things interesting.

This has been proposed already in the past.
The most common counterargument is that it would actually push more and more people into Solo: the effect would be the opposite of encouraging PvP.
People who enjoy PvP are already doing it (or trying to), the others, not so much, and this would repel them even more.

Expect lots of backlash.
I just want the game to be fun

how are the enemy to know what mats you have, also im not into pvp,you are saying its another opening for players to attack players for there mats, what about exploration data that as a well,i dont think so nice idea .

Consider carefully: What the PvP players think of as 'fun' can be the exact oposite for PvE Private Group/Solo players. There's good reasons for that those players don't hang out in Open.
True. And I'm not even a big pvp guy

It already is.

The wonderful thing about the game is there are so many different ways to have fun.

But depending on what you find fun engineering mats can be relatively difficult to accumulate and there is nowhere safe to store them which could mean someone’s minute of fun wipes out months or more of progress for someone else. That really doesn’t sound like a fair distribution of fun.

That could be about to change with PP2.0 release soon:

I guess "Commanders" refers to players, not NPCs.. though we'll have to see what makes it into the forthcoming release. I don't see any mention of this apparent new mechanic in the recent PP2.0 Q&A

If I understand OP correctly, it would not wipe out all of your hard collected mats, only the most recently collected portion.
