Its weird how details matter. Its the mismatch between super detailed skin textures and terrible eyes that causes that weird and sickening feeling. Its fixed mostly now, but its interesting nonetheless. Gaming is going to have to deal with 'uncanny valley' more and more the coming years until we reach true perfection, and with every jump forward their will be more and more unforseen neuro-responses.

Actually human brains have this remarkable ability to adapt and absorb the environment until we consider what we see as "normal". This is how 80% of obese Americans think it's normal to be devolving into aquatic mammals. Just the other day I was looking at an Elite NPC Crew member and thinking "Oh, she looks cute...". That's when I realised I was playing too much.

I've held off playing for a few days waiting for the patch, so will be interesting to see what has changed.

Haha, I thought that it was just me! I hadn't planned to be a sniper, picked a rifle up to see how it would play and oh boy. Definitely many locations where you could rinse the entire enemy force without them firing a shot in return.
LOL Yeah, an ishuray? sniper rifle dropped for me. After that I took drak and cora every time and used biotic, tech, falcon, when I am swarmed. In hc they really like to dog pile on ye, not even gonna bother with insanity. I'll let the young pros go there.

Well jumped into the pond, need to get my exploration fix in space gaming and ED aint providing these days, so Andromeda here we come :D

The patch has dropped also so it's a good time to give it a go with much of the initial griping some way fixed.

Just made it to the meridian, playing in hc is kicking my azz. I don't know where it goes from here. This is as good as ME 1 and 2 and I don't know where it goes yet. ME at its best. A great game in the wake of the ME Trilogy. Negative reviewers can just take a hike.
Thats because zero amount critics , or haters made it that far.
Those that did either just dont like the game (possible) or they had there minds set on hating it.

I can say now without a shadow of a doubt that its a 9/10 from me. I HATE putting scores on things , because its stupid and meaningless.

I have been called jaded , ignorant or an SJW for loving MassEffect andromeda.
The thing is , I dont care what others think.
I know what I felt , what I think.

And what I think is overall its a amazing game. unlike what RPS (a website that seems shocked that oblivion in skyrim looks like oblivion in skyrim) it has soul , tones of personality and takes risks.
I think the game is full of risks.

They went away from the milky way.
They left behind the geth and reapers (for now... I hope we get some reapers and geth. after all those quarians must have been halted by either one of them)
They went in a brand new direction in lore , history and narative and even fixed old plot holes.
The story serves as a giant bit of sideplot to ME2 and ME3 yet is stand alone.

It continues the franchise , and yet is a new start.

The game touchs on a lot of deeper subjects , like in the trilogy (racism , mental issues , social stigmas) all that with stories of politics and the fight for a new life with the old ways creeping up on everyone.

If someone tells me they dont like it , thats fine.
But when someone claims , that there is no depth , personality , lore or anything like that they either just dont like it or dont get it. or even worst dont want to.

I do think that most (not all) critics seem to have jumped on the bandwaggon.
Maybe out of fear of negative attention or just being blinded by the videos that showcased the game at its worst (still wish it came out a bit later)

Now this is controversial and I guess hypocritical of me , but I think its better than the current sweet hearts of gaming.
Like zelda. the new zelda looks fun. but it looks so generic and paint by numbers to me. because it seems to be handcrafted to be as safe as possible and only do what the charts say work.
I could be wrong. afterall my opinion is blinded because I never got zelda.

But I hate how some reviews praise ME:A but then say ''but we had zero dawn , zelda , etc'' should that matter?

I still play UT99 , should I just stop because other newer games are out? should a game be trashed because it feels old?
To me a lot of the bits that got trashed are ''the point'' of the game. it feels like ME1... how is that a bad thing?!

Look , I read the mass effect books. read every single entry in the codex , own every replica of the starships , I had a tali zorah statue (that some bosh'tet stole !) I even own the comics , that I dont even like.
I think most youtubers that claim its bad , not lore friendly or what ever have no clue what they are talking about...

Anyway I am going on , rambling and as I am not a captain I am not entitled to do so.

It looks better yeah, I also like how we can skip damn fake loading screens aka galaxy map travelling times.
I love the transitions. makes it feel like real space flight. (until the camera does that unzoom thing)
But I do agree that the option to skip should have been there day 1.

Its great when you are going to a planet you are landing on , but when just surveying it got annoying

It looks like this might have been changed. Played a couple of hours last night and enemies seem to react when you snipe at them from long range.

EDIT: It's still in 7/10 territory for me. I'm 30 hrs in, have landed on 3 planets and have started a number of the longer side quests. Most time spent bimbling around on Eos, which I have at 98% viability.

Some of us don't own consoles, and have no intention to, so those titles are not going to be available to us!

I had not paid attention to the Mass Effect series despite having 1 and 2 in my library (I need to give up on these sales) I started giving 1 a real go and had been enjoying the dialog interactions. I ended up buying the Mass Effect Trilogy for less than paying for just adding Mass Effect 3 and I also bought Andromeda. I can see myself replaying these for the next year or so. Reviews can be helpful but I'm glad I didn't pay much attention to what they were saying. I did the same for Aliens: Colonial Marines. I played A:CM to death unlocking everything and enjoying every minute of it. I plan to do the same with Andromeda and the Trilogy.

I dont own a console.
But my friend does.

That being said , even if all those games are on PC , I think games should be reviewed based on what they are trying to do or be.

Its like if critics dont want games to be art , instead they treat it like toys.

I never played A:CM. but the fact that you liked it made me happy.
There is something about hearing that a game that got bad reviews has fans makes me happy.

In a way , I do miss the days before the internet.
You buy a game , a movie and its only your opinion that matters. no one else is trying to tell you otherwise. and if they are chances are they are doing it in a social way.

When I was a kid , I used to have a lot of cheap games...
If a dad had a game that ran without the need of a CD I would ask to have it for the weekend.
When friends would have a new game that worked without the disk we would share it for one night.

Another thing that I miss is rumours , now you can just google it. but I digress

Doesn't really matter what other people think, there are always someone who will tell you who to vote for, what to eat, what suit you need to wear, I just don't give a hippopotamus :D
Just bark against the moon if anyone cared ;)

60% ME:A Downloaded....

You are right of course. I just get scared that EA will see MassEffect as a loss and pull the plug on any future projects.

They will never abandon the franchise. Instead they will "adapt" the franchise to suit the bigger masses to get more money. Just like they did with Dead Space. I'd rather have the franchise die before EA changing it to become just another mindless shooter...

RPG is a fluid term.
Stats are only one element.

We replaced rolling the dice with interactions. The issue is however I think we went too far.
For example making it so that in a sword fight you actualy do the swinging and blocking is (IMO) better than just rolling dice.

I think everything that could be done via gameplay should be done , leaving only the rest to dice and stats.
Combat and interaction stats should determine how good or bad or even what you can or can not do in the game.

For example : Two handed sword at a low skill should be you suck and keep messing up edge alignment. on a high level you get more moves and options.

The old way of doing it was (IMO) due to a lack of innovation and wanting to emulate the pen and paper way.

I think the issue with modern RPG is how failures are no longer an option. and stats are nearly pointless.

To me rolling dice is not good gameplay , its just RNG. with the only gameplay being betting on odds and building a decent char.
