Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

I tried OnAir and so far its a very fun experience! Registration and setting it up took more or less 20min and done - one small app that will work across X-plane, Prepar3d and MSFS2020.
Very nice interference, and interactions with the main sim. Did a few flights, bought the first plane, gonna play untill the trial ends. Maybe even subscribe for 9EUR for the next month as I really like how it works.

Welcome to Milford, New Zealand, capital of last minute aborted landings...

No wonder north island is the best...

Tongariro was somewhat disappointing with all those trees at the mountain tops.

However, I found the cause of this madness you pictured - for one this is not the fault of flight sim, but mismatching road/map data on Bing.

True, was one of the first places I went...

Sadly, vast majority of volcanos and surrounded volcanic areas are, unfortunately, filled with trees... Don't have a clue why, there's certainly no trees anywhere near most of these sites. It''s like the Ai that powers the game thinks the brown/grey/blackish areas of hardened lava flows and ash is actualy dirt so tries to fill them with forests...

And thats not even the worse, here's an ingame picture of Krakatoa, one of the most restless volcanoes in earth's history:

Not only the volcano is covered in trees and looks like a drainage pipe, as for some reason there's a pool inside it's crater. The volcano has also collapsed 2 years ago so it's mostly a hole in the sea nowadays, but the imagery is older that 2 years when Krakatoa was mostly a growing (and growling) grey pile of ash.

But not all of them suck though...

Perhaps future updates will improve this a bit... At least get rid of the trees. If not, well not the end of the world, this isn't geology simulator anyway so all these things are forgivable, and it's still much, much better in this regard than all the flight sims before.

One big difference between OnAir and FSE: OnAir is mostly singleplay oriented versus FSE's multiplay approach. One immediate consequence is that starting your own company (or FBO) is next to impossible in FSE in all the regions I checked. Every single airport in The Netherlands, Belgium, Nepal and the Carribean has been filled and cannot be used by new players anymore as FBO location. I have been able to find one airfield where new players can actually start their own FBO. Realistic for sure. Not quite convinced if it is fun. In OnAir you can pick any airfield you like.

I'm very tempted to subscribe OnAir, but I'll try it this weeked before commiting...

In other news, I keep thinking to myself how absolutely drop dead gorgeous this game is at night, both outside and inside the airplanes...

From what I gather, the biggest question you need to answer before settling with either FSE or OnAir is whether you'd prefer Offline ED over Open. If so, go with OnAir. If you prefer Open, go with FSE. With OnAir, you can chose difficulty settings, realism settings, it is easier to fly the plane you want from the place you want et cetera. But there is very little community or economic interaction between users.

Have to say I'm having fun with this game / sim...

Not a pilot in R/L, so learning the ropes and sticking pretty much to the small slow planes. Practicing ILS approaches / landings where they are available, not really used auto-pilot yet, getting better at trimming the plane. Have tried a few of the landing challenges, but in a plane of my choice, not necessarily the one mandated in the challenge. Courcheval is very entertaining. :)

Getting the controls right is paramount I think. I can see that for this kind of sim, pedals for yaw (and probably a flight yoke) are likely preferable to a stick with twist, as even with good dead zones set, I think with my (likely heavy handed) grip I'm getting some bleed between the two, making it very difficult to land on the centerline of the runway. Still, I'm going to persevere with my VKB Gunfighter, cannot really justify hundreds of dollars on new kit.

I like that there's quite a lot to learn even though it's not mandatory to fly the planes, and moving up in planes - speed and handling wise - gives a nice feeling of progression.

The scenery / graphics are fine for me (I play on high settings), and while some are far from photorealistic, it's still a big step up from previous versions. They are good and pretty accurate in my area of the world (northern California), except every now and then the mountains suddenly get covered in snow, which they are very definitely not right now... :)

Helicopter not required. Though a little more practice evidently was. Hovering into wind only works as long as you continue to face into the wind. Doh!

I've since managed to actually fly backwards, out of Stornoway, in even windier weather. And land it again without breaking it this time.

The flights from here are very similar...they just take the half bricks out from under the wheels and the plane takes off on it's own if the wind is blowing in the right direction :D

Awesome views! I also just realized I have 246 screenshots already...
I agree, we are nitpicking location of trees on an Earth-scale, we are having it good.
Actually I find looking around the worst part of sightseeing, that is to say HOTAS + mouse control head control. In Elite this wasn't an issue as I remained hands-on with the KB+M. VR will solve this big time. :)

Lucky you, erm the RP character. I suppose he’s got a good sponsor deal.

Nah, he is a typical multi-billionaire, preaching environmentalism on Twitter, but gives a biowaste about his own carbon footprint. He has a 747 too, just scared to fly it before getting better. :)

TrackIR or Tobii are your friends and total game-changers, in the lack of VR.

I know, but I'm about two months away from VR at worst (or so it seems), so I will simply sit it out. I will probably take more higher altitude, longer flights until then, there it is no issue - once VR is here I will get more into small planes like the Shock Ultra.

Going in and out of Sumburgh was always similar, though arriving/departing from Baltasound Airport on Unst is still a a experience I'll never forget. No matter how much alcohol I drink :(

There are mountains in my region that IRL are bare rock on the top, but MSFS covers them with trees. It's very disappointing. However, it's relatively easy to add exclusion zone polygons using the built-in developer tools, so I'm thinking of doing this myself to add a proper treeline. Now if only I could get rid of all the snow and clouds baked into the aerial photography! Bing Maps is terrible... :(

ps - Dear XPlane, partner with Google to make a photorealistic sim like MSFS, and I'll happily defect to your camp.
