A major part of the problem with that is FD did not advertise their game as 'its Elite from 1984 polished up a bit' they advertised it as, well basically, something it is not, using images and video that are not very real reprsentations of what you may see in game play. A lawyer could take a look but I think a close analysis of what was advertised v's what was delivered would reveal some serious problems, but that isn't really the point at all.
They did use the term MMO they then removed it when people who bought Elite The MMO said 'this is not an MMO, its go no MMO content'. I did enough following early on and research to know that Elite was never going to be a proper MMO but even I was shocked at the stunning lack of game mechanics and shallow overall game play.
Im still having plenty of fun in Elite, but telling people who are disapointed, you should have researched it better is not a great answer, they read the advertising! Lots of people who bought the game have gone, they wont come back, thats the nature of all games, its not unique to ED. The question for those of us who remain in game, one of many, is, are there enough going to be left who will spend more money for 'more' content in terms of DLC/xpacs in the next 12 months (which unless its already well into design and development aint gonna happen) for it to be viable as an ongoing revenue stream to FD. My concern is when I think that through I'm left feeling, maybe, but maybe not.
FD have gotten a modernised version of an 80's classic out and its fun (a lot of fun), but its 2015 now and 80's game depth and mechanics went out of fashion, well, in the 80's. For a game to survive it has to do so much more. I dont even think most people are asking for so much more, some would be happy with just what the kickstarter project led them to believe would be in game, others are asking for basic features and the promissed living galaxy with depth, consequence and danger. For as long as FD remain tight lipped and push out updates that fix bugs or only add expected features people will wonder what is going on. 1.1 adds nothing, it fixes things. 1.2 will fix things and so far adds 'wings' which unless it is some major innovative and new way of providing basic multiplayer grouping is just a basic feature.
No one really cares about the 'Im leaving game sux' posts, but there are very few of them, most of the leaving posts are actually quite articulate arguments and reasons. Thankfully there are not too many but it is one of the more common threads these days. Forums are a very poor representation of what is going on in a game, but they are the best there is (sadly). The problem is just what is going on with those who bought Elite, played it for some time and have gone, moved on. Are they likely to buy an expansion in 6 months (or 36 months) thats adds planetary landings, probably not, certainly they are a lot less likly too than if they were still playing.
At some point quite soon DB will be in an AMA or interview and he will get asked some awkward questions, he's already been seen to be very defensive about not having the promissed offline mode, he will get eaten alive if he ends up in an interview that wants to take him on, I kind of hope that does not happen, but its great gaming press. Other games have been slaughtered in the press for less.
And again the only thing that matters is the ongoing delivery of features, what those features are and the long term revenue that FD can earn as a result of paid for content. That strategy has not been given any detail yet.
I think ED can be the deep, living, engaging, space sim/game that DB wanted to make, it's not, not yet.
Anyway got to go finish outfitting my Asp and plot a course, second star to the right wasn't it?
