Mining - unallocated resources

Hi all

I'm really struggling with mining.
I'm relatively new to Elite Dangerous after deciding to wait until I got a Thrustmaster so I'm a little behind the curve.

I'm looking to use mining as a way of getting into the game, I've managed to use the mining lazer to break off a fragment and collect it but I'm not sure what to do next.
I get a massage saying unallocated resources which is stopping me collecting any more rock, I believe I need to dump some unwanted rock but I cant vent specific rock types, only everything.

Can anyone help me at all please?

Many thanks
John M

Do you have a REFINERY installed in your ship? If no then you can't fully mine. If yes you just highlight the material you want vented and hit X on it. Now I don't know if the recent update fixed the glitches but it will say RESOURCES UNALLOCATED a lot of the time but that's not the case. Just keep an eye open for when your collector limpets grab something and just wait at the cargo hatch doing nothing. If that happens go check the refinery and vent as needed.

PS. I recommend a 4A Refinery for the best and optimal mining experience.

you need to empty some materials from your refinery (if you have one installed).

this is one of the best basic guides to mining: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1npzKEXpExd1aEz_hLvlQIELL1uX4gvVHtY9AhQ-CcCI/edit#slide=id.p

just to spare your frustration ... while it is possible to do a whole career just mining, it is one of the hardest way to start the game.

basically, when i started a fresh save recently, i didn't even think of mining till i owned an AspE. while mining in smaller ships is doable, it is not really fun as you either miss the internals for prospector, collector, refinery and/or cargo space. maybe I'd start mining in a t6, but a t6 can only fit small mining lasers...

i'd suggest starting by running data delivery and trade missions. i personally enjoy mining a lot once in a while, but surely not as a beginners activity.

Many Thanks for the reply - much appreciated
I'm sure I have a refinery albeit a cheap one (see image below) but X doesn't vent. I was wondering if it was a bug but the collector isn't grabbing anything.

Many thanks - I'll check the guide out - that's great.
I thought it might be a good way of getting used to flying beyond the tutorials. I might go and look at other jobs first :)

Once again many thanks

Ive done a spot of mining for engineers but I ma not a miner by any means. The said, there are a couple of things to note.

1) My advice is get a REALLY good collector limpet controller. Waiting for your collector drones to pick up materials is the longest and most uninteresting part of mining...so get the BEST controller you can for the most amount of collector limpets.
2) Dont forget your refinery! I did it more than once when swapping load outs
3) Dont forget the limpets! They are cargo available through advanced outfitting restock.

Re: unallocated resources - this is an odd one I never fully understood and I have little intention to return to mining expect for engineers. It appears to crop up when all of your bins are in use and you find another fragment not already in the bin that a collector has in its tiny mitts.

At least thats my thinking. I wouldn't think its a problem as a starting role if you ar into that kind of thing, I think it would be a very slow way to make money though for a beginner with a small ship. I think mining becomes profitable for very large ships that can carry high quality controllers and refineries and have lots of room to stay in a ring for a long period of time. FDev really need to rebalance potential earnings across the game to make mining more economic Imo.

Ah you have the worst refinery probably for space reasons. Yeah the vent button at the top is a little finicky. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't. Usually I vent, in your case, the indite just to get the refinery working again.

Thanks - that was the plan - I just couldnt get it to vent, but Ill keep trying [smile]

Sorry - can I just check that - should I vent the Indite or the Coltan? Perhaps I've been misunderstanding the interface

Hi all

Great game, very real experience.

I've come across other commanders having the same issues with mining with a single bin, and I've noticed it's been logged as a bug.
So for now I've parked the mining and refocused on delivery missions.

Lowered my ships weight and now it's really going well, loving it, it feels like I'm back on track :D

Thanks for all your help guys.

Okay - officially recognised by FDev as a bug or someone has reported it as a bug - perhaps two different things?

I think Mining is tricky for small ships it is definitely a big ship trade i would say. having a single bin is problematic because most asteroids have multiple materials embedded and, currently, it does not appear that you can programme collector limpets to select only one material type (Wouldn't that be a good idea Frontier!!!) so you will end up continually getting a load of rubbish you don't want. I found, even with 5 - 7 bins in the minaconda, i still end up ejecting a lot of rubbish my indiscriminate collectors keep picking up.

Certainly something for the BEYOND updates next year seeing as mining is getting a buff / nerf pass.

once you can get a slightly larger ship i'd recommend getting a larger refinery if possible. the larger the refinery the better, but you'll also need a good amount of cargo space for both the limpets you'll want to use for collection (and maybe prospecting, once you get the hang of vanilla mining.) and for all that material you'll be gaining.

if ether the refinery or the cargo hold run out of space, it gives you that unalocateable message. you just need larger modules. unfortunatly. with a small ship, mining is more tedious then usefull. your better off doing cargo runs and such to earn your next ship.

TBF logged as a bug.

I agree about needing a larger ship, there's a reason why it's difficult with small ships, so I'll work on it. :)

Thanks Azgodeath - I agree :)
