HOTAS is for noobs.

Bit miffed - waited over a decade for this, I paid the better part of 100 quid, download the game today and the mouse controls are basically unplayable.
It seems like no matter what settings I pick, I am either moving (yaw) incredibly incredibly slowly, or its so super-sensitive & skippy and jumpy that I cant get the reticle on target because it is all over the place even if I move the mouse the tiniest amount.
I have tried flight assist on vs off (I was unable to tell the difference), and I have tried flying in the blue zone but the yaw is still incredibly slow. I am not going to buy a joystick or a controller either. I have fiddled around with the (multiple) sensitivity and deadzone sliders about 200 times but its not really working in any combination.
Unplayable.
Anyone know who I can contact about getting a refund?![]()

Funny. Guess I must be some kind of genius to successfully fly around with mouse and keyboard combo.
To make things even funnier I have T.Flight Hotas X that just sits there gathering dust because I find m+k combo better.
So the update on this is for anyone else looking for a refund, as I bought it through kickstarter they apparently cannot provide a refund as my contract is with KS, and as far as KS are concerned the contract was met as something was delivered.
So, caveat emptor I guess. I am now stuck with £85 of unplayable software.
Thanks to all of those that have been considerate. For the record I did not expect to just be able to sit down and be awesome without trying. Of course I expected to have to learn.
What is the problem is that the controls are either too slow meaning that it literally takes a minute to do a 360 degree turn (which is obviously useless in battle), or so uncontrollably sensitive that with a tiny movement of the mouse you are swinging around in huge and uncontrollable jumps. The net result is you either cannot move fast enough to target something, or you are moving so much you cant target something.
I have never had this problem with any other game I've played - space sim, flight sim, FPS etc ... a quick tweak or two to sensitivity and its fine and you're off playing happily, but not this time. There does not seem to be a sweet spot where it is fast enough to be effective in battle whilst stable enough to actually be able to reliably point the reticle at something.
Anyway there you go. I remain hugely disappointed.

It sounds like you're dealing with several problems:
The first two are part of the learning curve, and unlikely to change. Have a go flying round the "waste disposal" mission at different speeds, pitching and yawing to see how speed affects things.
- Yaw (sideways movement) and pitch (vertical movement) are both most effective when at travelling about 50% speed (see the blue notch on the speed bar), in order to discourage well-armoured players from just sitting still and shooting things
- Yaw has been deliberately slowed down to encourage players to use pitch, as Frontier feel this creates more dramatic gameplay
- Mouse sensitivity controls are (ironically) themselves too sensitive
- Mouse control is not configurable enough yet
The third and fourth are artefacts of the development process. In earlier releases I only found the mouse usable if it was exactly one pixel above the minimum, and it sounds like you have a similar issue. Changing the variable deadzone might help, but ultimately we've drawn the short straw in the dev timetable. So far as I'm aware they plan to have it solved by release, but you probably won't be winning many battles until then.
In happier news, Shinrata Dezhra (the Founders' System) is currently going through the DDF and among other things is likely to be a well-policed neutral zone. If you've backed at the £85 level, you should be able to start there and enjoy some scenery even if you can only get flight to work at the most basic level.
I know this is frustrating (I'm a mouser too and am pretty limited in what I can do). If you're looking for something you can do to make things better, you might try uploading a video to Youtube of your problems. Videos of newbie problems can be particularly educational for the devs, as it gives them a view of the game they rarely get to see.
i bought the game yesterday and have been toying with all the options.. i sometimes get it where it doesnt save the options ive tried to change and it takes a couple attempts before it actually saves anything..
i have found the settings best for me are Relative Pitch/Roll Inverted, no auto yaw (so its just on the keyboard) flight assist off (feels more direct) and that seems to be decent enough, only problem i have is when im trying to turn the ship around i run out of movement space for my mouse so i have to lift it up and start again..
i have tried my cheapo joystick and it seems to have a massive deadzone in the centre which im sure is nothing to do with the game, just the crap joystick..
i will persevere with this and see how it goes, so far i have done all the senarios but the last one. i seem to get away with killing 2 maybe 3 then i just get wiped out as ive run out of missiles.
In your second bullet (*) I think you mean roll rather than pitch?
Bind a keyboard button to pitch up and if you want pitch down, to help with the long turns, and just use the mouse for fine tuning your aim.
