My first VR experience in Elite

I just picked up a Rift yesterday, haven't even opened the box yet because I spent most of last night re-arranging my office for an optimal play area.

Question though, I picked up the bundle that included the Touch controllers. I am trying to set it up so that my open play area is to the right of my desk, and trying to create a flight chair set-up with my recliner directly behind my desk. Will this work with how the 2 sensors need to be set-up? Or will I need to re-arrange the sensors to point at my flight chair and then re-adjust to the 7x9 foot play area every time I want to play a different game in the rift?

I use an unusual setup (Two sensors are in opposite corners of my play area on the ceiling pointed down) and I can sit down to play rift just as well. Just make sure that wherever you are setting up your flight chair is within the tracked area where the cameras are pointing.

If it isn't, then yes you need to run the setup every time after moving the sensors.

OK, that makes sense. So if I want the largest play area for freedom of movement I should drag my flight chair into the play area whenever I launch ED and drag it back out when I'm playing anything else.

Thanks! Rep for the advice o7

Frontier you lovable s, I love every single one of you!
Pretty much maxed out on xbox side of elite for months now and been playing since GPP, but finally picked up a GTX 1070 and HTC Vive for elite on pc with a flight stick, after 4 hours of fighting to just get the headset to show the game (Don't have the rest of the stuff calibrated, i just wanted it to work first) I was jaw dropped and laughing from the fun i had just flying in a SIDEWINDER, just absolute FUN.

Thank you for VR with this game!

You sound like me back in December - after 6 months on the XBO I got a 1070 and RIFT and just love playing Elite in it!

Just can figure out how to get the GalMap to work with HOTAS, so I'm still using the XBO Controller that comes with the Rift.

I got touch a couple weeks back and after playing Robo Recall I had to rearrange my whole man cave to get the extra room to play it correctly. Man, being able to dodge bullets by ducking and moving around is pretty awesome!

I think you mean upscaling in the 2nd and 3rd use but yeah, I'm struggling to understand this too. That said I'm going to try SS=0.85 and increase my HMD Quality from 1.25 to 1.5 (or higher) to see what it's like because a few people seem to swear by it.

Quick update to say that I couldn't really discern any noticeable difference in quality between SS=1.0,HMDQ=1.25 and SS=0.85,HMDQ=1.5 aside from a slight reduction in framerate so I going back to the former.

It's no joke, VR utterly destroys any boredom you had from no life the game for such a long time, it's been so long since i've felt that kind of fun and excitement in any game.

yep... i think one of the reasons that despite ED being bare bones in so many areas i still cant stop playing is down to VR.

I got my 1st rift in 2014, and aside from a few hrs all of my time in ED has been in VR. .... it is a completely different game imo once you are IN your ship, and is why despite me moaning about almost every area of the game to 1 degree or another, it is still by far my most played game of all time.

What setup have you got?

Setting HMD to 2.0 and SS to .85 should make a difference but you'll probably have to lower textures and shadows and switch off blur and bloom. It's the HMD at 2.0 that appears to make the big difference but dropping SS too low also degrades that difference. That probably isn't possible on anything older than 1080 GTX though.

I've got a 1080 and an i5. I like shadows at High and I've got max textures. With my current settings I get a solid, non-ASW 90fps. Given I didn't really see a difference going up to HMDQ 1.5 I don't personally see much point striving for 2.0. Other opinions are available I guess.
