My Response to the Elite Community and Thoughts on "Colonia and the Thargoids" – Video by ObsidianAnt

I went to Colonia without knowing about the pit stop stations on the way. In fact I'm still there. The trip wasn't challenging OP. It was tedious. Challenging is like trying to find a route to the Crab Pulsar with a low range FSD. If they make a fast route to and from Colonia I will be happy because I don't anticipate Colonia getting A rated outfitting or engineers any time soon and I left before I experimented with light weight everything.

I'm not expecting an OP Colonia, for those reasons. There might be a reason there is no Wacky Engineer in Colonia...

Just because the shortcut exists doesn't mean you are forced to take it...

The problem with shortcuts is that they trivialize the long cuts. Doing something for the sport of it isn't really the same thing as doing something because it's otherwise impossible to achieve. If someone does something the difficult way, well, they're kind of being obstinate, but if someone does something that is difficult in order to achieve a goal and there is otherwise no easy way of doing it, then it's more of a noteworthy and meaningful accomplishment.

I don't play this game as a sports game. I'm sure some do though, in their own way. I don't suppose there's anything wrong with that in particular, other than this not intending to specifically be a sports game. I play this game as though I were a Commander in the Pilots Federation in 33XX. It's a very serious business, you know... :)

I'd argue that overcoming the tedium, as you call it, of getting there is an accomplishment. What else could you have been doing that you would have otherwise preferred to do? Yet, you overcame your short term desires to invest time in reaching a goal you set for yourself, and you accomplished it.

It has to do with making meaningful choices in the game, weighing the prose and cons of something, and rising to the occasion.

Lol, just pure lol.

"Yeah the game is boring, but you can find fun in trying to overcome the boredom!"

So what's the point in bothering to go out to Colonia then? Why not the Pleiades, or any number of other places much closer to the bubble? It's the challenge of it. If someone chooses to just jump honk along the way to get there as fast as they can, well, that's their choice, but they're still overcoming difficulty to reach a meaningful goal.

On the other hand, if someone wants to, they can go exploring along the way instead of just jump honking. So, there are some options, though I understand exploration, such as it is, isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but how does adding a handful of possible pitstops along a 500 jump trip make the trip any less "challenging"?

If exploration were even remotely dangerous, then i suppose these could be considered 'safety nets'. But it's not. It's currently just a time-sink with some pretty pictures along the way.

Yep... Nearly three months in a Sidewinder to get it fully A-specced... Scrimping credits 1000 at a time... The original Sidey had one less Class 2 slot than the current one... LOL .. That's when I got my hauler. It was a revelation. Decent jump range and a huge, 16T payload instead of the 4T at a time with the Sidewinder... Payday. I could sometimes make 10,000 credits on a single trade run.

I was pretty well set after I got my Cobra, never really bothering with much to "advance" through the game since then, instead just going out and enjoying it in my own way. The largest and most expensive ship I have now and will likely ever have is a decently outfitted Python.

Had a bit of fun in a rum runner Cobra setup back then, trading rares, running from pirates, and the like.

It seemed, from the video and other comments I've seen, that there is more to it than just that.

Either way, it may be a bit of a moot point, considering people can get out to Colonia now under 2 hours anyway. [blah] Still, that's more of an extreme scenario.

You really don't seem to like other people having different to or playing the game different do you.
Now people shouldn't go to Colonial unless it is for WR3ND approved reasons and they must experience it the way you seem the only true way to experience it or FDev have ruined the game again.

Ignoring that this threat is you saying the game. Experience has already been ruined based on someone's musings of what something might be.
No facts just someone's idea

Lots of smoke, 'n no fire here WR3ND.

Would you be so kind to elaborate why Casual gamers on the other hand in general seem to be about the weakest form of humanity that I've encountered. ???? Thats not just a little elitist, its plain stupid and offending.
400Billion stars, not to mention their followers makes you feel a little cramped by chance?

Start to worry WR3ND, if by any accident, an engineer shows up out there. Anyway my advise ----> Run as far as you can, hiding!

Where has he mentioned casual gamers? I'm a casual gamer and agree with him. I don't want to see it easy to get to colonial.

It should be a time investment to get to such a distant place.

My initial OP was out of line and more of a rant, so apologies for that and the confusion. Also, if I remember correctly, I think I said "some casual gamers," "cassual gamers in general," or the like, implying that that isn't the sort of thing all casual games get their kicks from.

I know of some (self proclaimed) casual gamers that enjoy the "hardcore" nature of Elite: Dangerous.

What sparked the attitude was likely seeing all the comments on Obsidian Ant's video asking for fast travel all over the place, and commenting how stupid and boring the game is for not having it.

For the sake of clarity, this reply on this thread quotes my whole initial OP. → https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-ObsidianAnt?p=5889601&viewfull=1#post5889601

Perhaps if you focused more on your own game experience and less on what everyone else is doing you'd enjoy it more and wouldn't feel the need to tell everyone that doesn't play the way you do that they are doing it wrong. Just a thought...

This thread is about where the game is going, not where it is now, so I'm not telling everyone that doesn't play the way I do that they're doing it wrong, because that way of playing doesn't exist. The point is, there should still be some meaningful challenges in this game worth overcoming, and if not, then it's a loss for everyone. No one is forcing someone to play the hard way, or whatever, just as no one has to go out to Colonia. It's about the opportunity to achieve something.

It's an interests to me specifically, because I have an interest in this game and how I'm able to play within it and the opportunities it has for other players in the future.

That's just it though. Regardless of what shortcuts FDev puts in the game your experience is ultimately up to you. The challenges still remain if you want them to remain. Nobody is forcing you to take the easy way. The only difference is now nobody is forcing you to take the hard way either. Those who want a more vanilla experience or don't have the time to invest but still want experience things like Colonia for example, can use the work around. Those who want the hardcore experience and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it don't use them. Same with the engineers. You can mod your ship or can can keep it stock like the old days.

It all comes down to having a choice which in turn offers more opportunities for both present and future players.

If there are new, easier ways, then it takes away from the meaning behind achieving and overcoming a worthwhile challenge and the opportunity for players to be able to meaningfully overcome those sort of challenges in the future. Again, as far as I know, this isn't meant to be a sports game. It isn't about doing things the hard way for the sport of it, it's about feeling you're able to accomplish something meaningful within the game, and having the opportunity to try to overcome challenges and have it be worth something more to you than a gold sticker that says, "I did it the hard way, just because."

It has to do with player agency and having worthwhile experiences and opportunities while playing the game.

ED have now more and more people playing

Why on earth would anyone say that?? The only available figures are on Steam charts and they show for that largest section of the ED playerbase, this is just not true -- there's been no appreciable increase since last year, or the year before.

This kind of claim would make sense if Frontier were putting out rising player numbers. But they haven't put out any player numbers for over a year.

In my view the problem is the overly repetitive process of getting anywhere and the extremely limited and simplistic 'exploring' gameplay experience. Lets be frank, spending 12 hours jumping is tedious and a chore. Whenever I get several thousand light years from sol I think about the journey back, 20k away and the self destruct looks very inviting. I wouldn't mind if it took me months to reach the core, if the process enjoyable, an adventure, and not the gaming equivalent of Chinese water torture.

Truth is the exploration mechanics of jump honk scoop is pretty lousy, and dare I say lazy. The only real reward is seeing cool vistas. Its a one dimensional process. The galaxy should be full of wonder, going out into the big drink should engaging, interactive, challenging, rewarding and fun.

Lets hope good things are coming re the core mechanics coz exploration in its present form is worse than watching paint dry.

There is a recurring theme here, FD has taken grind to a whole new level. Its hardly surprising folks seek or exploit ways past it. i.e. Super power ranking, Ugh, what a miserable empty, frustrating and unrewarding time sink.. If FD can't be bothered to put effort into these things the game would be better off without it.

I've yet to get to Colonia being on the outskirts where I am but what's the big deal? I don't get that part and maybe I'm a noob in saying that but where I'm at and doing what I'm doing, as boots go, I'm filling them. I have my own personal goals and to be honest Colonia, Mia or whatever its called isn't on my radar right now, neither is all the hype of the thyroids.

Right now, my game and my game only is to get the best I can, where I can and just enjoy the journey because when the destination is reached, it's going to be awsome.

V2k.

.

Putting aside the fact that most gamers I know on steam have the attention span of a goldfish.. As far as I am aware New Xbox & PS4 Cmdrs are not registered on stream, out of 5 of my friends that joined ED over the last six months (PC) not one of them use steam. Only time I fire up steam now is to play Asseto Corsa.
