Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

Sometimes when booting up ED, when I click CONTINUE, it jumps me straight into my cockpit,
and doesn't give me a chance to select the MODE (ie. OPEN, SOLO, TRAINING, etc) I wish to play in.
Using the <SPACE> key as an alternative to a mouse click really works ! Thanks Codger ! (y)

(Bit like using the <ENTER> key to achieving the same thing outside ED.)

EDIT: 16/10/21 I would now suggest: wait 'til the menu page has fully installed, and then use the <ENTER> key rather than the <SPACE> key.
6 successes out 6 goes. 17/10/21

In my case, I've only lost ships on purpose, never by accident (on my main account). And only some sidewinders, and one DBX. But I'm a careful guy.

I'm getting closer to triple elite, though. Maybe I'll get there this year. Or the next ;)

At the moment I'm Elite, Elite, Dangerous. Kinda like they named the game after me! :D
I guess explorer and trader is Elite and combat is dangerous?
Combat seems slowest to build rank in. I've made Elite explorer, Tycoon trader (only 30% left to get to elite) and I'm 68% through Competent in combat. I'm staying in Colonia up to Expert combat to access the last engineer here and then I'll come back to the bubble. Except I'll also go back and forth to the galaxy core for sessions of ELW hunting over the next 6 months.

Did you realize you are ........ 4830LY east ......... 24.860LY south ....... and at a higher altitude of 789LY than COLONIA ?

I just update my inara profile and the system name Quain is currently sleeping in is called Kyloarph RD-A d1-6009
Not sure what coordinates that is.

Sorry. Had trouble up-loading it .....

The coodinates are ....-7120 : -490 : 20790. Which makes you fairly close to COLONIA. In fact very close.

I think the big difference to previous space games I've played, is that ED is played in the 3 dimensions: X : Y : Z.
All other sims I've played have been in the 2 dimensions: X : Y.
AND HOW MUCH SIMPLER !!!! 😲
And how much more complicated for me moving to ED.
Until, until I found ..................................X : Z : Y. :p
Some here have challenged the value of me pursuing X : Z : Y;
however for new players of ED, I strongly advise you to get an understanding of ED's coordinate geometry (ie. X : Z : Y) in the Galaxy Map.
And here's your first task: why is he say X : Z : Y and not X : Y : Z as any good Engineer will tell you ? 🤔
[Oh dear, I used to come here and just ask questions, now I'm giving advice. 😖 😃]
Other more experienced pilots will question what I'm saying, but they're Elite Pilots and have been playing without it for maybe years.
Well, I think they have, it's a bit hard to find out.

EDIT: There's enough information in this thread so you don't need to look any further.
It's "rough stuff" as I was working through it, but that has its humorous side. 😜
Just go through my posts at this thread (maybe a SEARCH using "coordinate" and my name "wombat1940" should get most of it or be a good start). ;)

OK, I wasn't going to say anything, but I think you are really over thinking this. Some of us have already said that those grid numbers have absolutely no meaning in the game. No one uses them for navigation.

But maybe you should post your 'findings' into a new thread instead of just in here where no one is really going to see it.
Making a new thread about grid numbers in the main forum will allow you to get a broader audience, hence better input, rather than just the 2 or 3 people in this thread.

Yes, thanks crib3. I have thought about it, particularly as I'm not getting any real interest from others here. In fact, it's more the opposite. 😜 But that's fine. I can't expect others to have the same enthusiasm for it as me. And I'm happy to leave it like that. I don't want it to take me away from what I really want to do here, and that progressing well.
But thanks for the suggestion. (y)

I compared Horizons Galmap and Odyssey Galmap, and they both contain the Outdoor World description. But in Odyssey the words "Earth Like World" are nowhere to be found, whereas in Horizons they are in the pop-up window.

I think it's just an omission. They lost it when they removed the popups.

I tried to find DRYOOE ..... on my Galaxy Map. No good. :( Is that because it's only in Odyssey ? 😮

I'm going to start exploring at the furthest away System: LTT 3686
I probably should start at my home system, LHS 2265, but for some reason (and I don't know why) I don't what to. :p
So here goes .........
I note there are wars between factions in 'MySystem' ie. LHS 2265, which I regret, but expected.
(We can't stop having wars within a single Nation, let only Nations on our own Planet ! But enough of that .....)
On ED - H:
1. What about wars between Systems ?
2. Within 'MySystem' do I have to decide who I side with or is better to stay neutral ?
3 Can I help "heal the wounds" in 'MySystem' between factions and if so, how ?
Thank you.

1. That doesn't happen. It's only between in-system factions.
2. That is up to you, but because you don't do combat, maybe best to stay neutral.
3. Yes you can, but you are talking about the BGS, which is very complex. I play the BGS in my home system for my adopted faction. You are not ready for that yet.

The question of whether a civil war starts or not is to do with the relative influence factions have in the system. It's a game mechanic in the end designed to give commanders a reason greater than credits or materials to do combat, combat being a huge part of the game. If you want to support your faction without engaging in combat, doing missions with Influence++ rewards for the faction you want to support will help.

I just arrived at the Fleet Carrier owned by the organiser of the ELW hunt in the ZUNAO KU-D D13-3764 system. He discovered 3 Earth Like Worlds together in this system - which is extremely rare. Now that I'm here I'll start thinking more about X,Z,Y coordinates and identifying a cube that I want to explore all of the at least A and F class stars which are substantially more likely to have ELWs than any other start type. I'm told there is a relationship between the amount of helium in the region of the galaxy your are in and the chances of finding ELWs, and the helium level is good in this area. Not sure if helium is high or low here.

That will suit me. (y)

What's BGS ?
Thanks for these. (y)

What about staying neutral ? My preference.

When you do missions for a faction, there is usually at least a minimal addition to their influence or wealth when you do the mission. If you want to play neutral, do missions for all the factions including the pirate gangs if present - which means in time you will become allied with all of them as your reputation increases with them - another side effect of I think every mission type.

BGS = Background Simulation

I've always remained "neutral", just because I choose missions based on how they benefit me rather than the factions.

In some systems I've worked hard to become allied with multiple factions, so that they offer me the most money for missions.

If I'm going to do a mission, I try to get paid as much as possible for it (unless there is a non-credit reward I'm after instead).

That's about all the thought I give to it :)

Nice to see that I'm not the only one finding some values for X : Z : Y. 😜
But I think we are in the minority unless my appeal to trainee Pilots in my Post #1408 has some effect

Are you Mass Locked to the FleetCarrier ? Looks like you're about ..... 3.91km away, so you're close enough. But it must be big if that's the case ! 😲

Right. Help all factions I assume pleases them all. Until they each find out I'm also helping the others ..... :D
Maybe I need to record how much I give to each. So I can keep it balanced. 🤔
Mind you, if any faction or factions is acting again the System's interest (the pirates maybe), stuff em ! And they'll stop getting any handouts from me !

BGS.... Backgrou-blah-blah. I'm still none the wiser, and I'm very happy to leave it at that for the moment. ;)
