ANNOUNCEMENT Narrative additions and Dev Diary FAQ

Some of the organics found are more fungal or chemosynthetic bacterial in nature, and others would sit well outside of any earth classification system - these could, in scientific terms, be considered fauna, but not in the traditional sense of the word and we want to be clear on what to expect in game based around the thin atmospheres that will be unlocked.
"It's life Steven and Bruce....but ney as we ken it..." The principles of life identification according to M'Coy.. 👍

I always had the hope they'd bring back Galnet, why else would they update it and then let it fizzle out?

This is a prime example as to how Fdev operates. They implement something new to the game in it's most basic form, then iterate upon it at a later time.

They've done that time and time again, so I think they'll eventually touch on every aspect of the game in due time.

Looking forward to Odyssey and Galnet!

I missed the first half of the stream so I'm still catching up but it really does feel like momentum for Odyssey is building now and the news about Galnet, CG's, narrative, VR support, etc is all really really encouraging. I actually feel like a corner has been turned ... hope is returning. No, not just hope ... genuine excitement!

Thanks to Art and Bruce for an excellent stream, Paul for posting this very nice summary and everyone at FD for continuing to nurture this amazing game.

Financial results for ED are excellent.

Frontier wants to extend this situation by creating Odyssey and implementing GalNet again etc.

And David wants to see his baby grow and evolve. :)

I hope that Odyssey gets excellent financial results so that ED continues to evolve for many years.

Will Odyssey’s planetary improvements be applied to existing land-able planets without atmospheres?
Yes! The improvements to Odyssey’s planetary tech will be applied to our entire galaxy simulation so planets without an atmosphere will be more breathtaking than ever.
It is unclear, however, if this applies for Horizons, too.

Of course, in all the enthusiasm (mine included), we are profusely thanking Frontier for returning features they took away in the first place.

However, King Arthur has extracted the Excalibur of Community Goals (and Galnet) from the stoney Frontier. Huzzah!

I think it's more likely than not, if multiplayer intercompatibility is being maintained. It's not just ground textures. The new tech seems to redistribute a lot of the small details and add a lot more variety in rock formations and scattering. Can't have one person driving their SRV straight through what appears to be a boulder field to someone else, or hovering above the ground where Odyssey calculates a slope slightly differently.

Though official confirmation would be nice.

It's so good to have the narrative back and its also reassuring that there at least an outline until 2022. I take it that these story arcs are different from Interstellar Initiatives and that part of the forum can be retired?

Or could it be renamed to narrative (or something similar) where all narrative announcements and discussion can take place?

Oh, and also, the surface improvements were originally promoted as part of Beyond (commonly referred to as "ice planets" because most work was focused there, but general improvements to scatter rock systems etc. were supposed to come to all planets).

So I would be very surprised if that was then put behind a paywall, especially when doing so would create technical and logistical headaches with instancing and multiplayer, as well as PR ones.

So you don't think Horizons is part of "entire galaxy simulation"? 🤔 🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♀️

(And I guess once they say "Obviously this includes Horizons" then you can start asking about individual planets :ROFLMAO: )
Wrong conclusion, we obviously had (have?) a difference in planetary rendering before (vanilla and Horizons).

Yes, it would be, as it really depends on what is actually changed with EDO.

You mean similar to Lava planets in Horizons?

Lol. One you can land on - one you can't. Whereas EDO / Horizons are both landable.

Edit: A better comparison is 'why not keep the ADS and FSS both in-game' - and the answer is "because keeping two versions of the same thing working is extra overhead". Which is what would be happening if they kept Horizons surfaces alongside EDO. Buy hey, we'll find out soon enough :)

Lava planets were not a key official point on the Horizons public roadmap, they were not shown off at promotional events and hyped in marketing. If they were ever mentioned it was "we'd like to do this during Horizons", more like the answers to "will we get clouds and weather in Odyssey" ("We'd love to do that at some point after launch...").

Ice planets were a promised feature just like Fleet Carriers, which did eventually come to everyone they promised them to.

I thought they did confirm that during the livestream. They said that whole game (including the airless planets in horizons) were going to get the upgrade. It makes sense really, less code branches to maintain.

I think they said something like "all planets" would be upgraraded yeah (don't have the exact quote handy), but afaik they haven't actually specified if that's "all planets" in all versions where planets are accessible, or just "all planets" in Odyssey. Though Occam's Razor strongly points to it being the former.

While this has been away for a little while, the community and development teams have been constantly reviewing the feedback that’s been shared by you. To ensure that focus continues, we have assembled a dedicated new team to ensure that content like CG’s, bonus weekends and of course GalNet, are back in the game.
So what happened to "galnet is confusing and no one wants it" ?

As far as I'm aware the community, as a whole, hasn't changed their minds about Galnet.
Galnet is awesome, it's always been a core part of the game and we love it.

I appreciate the humble pie being eaten here and glad the decision to shut it down has been reversed.
