Needs it's own thread... RDR2 release date on PC

The further I advance in this game, the more crashes I experience.
Yesterday, I managed to get through 'American Distillery' about the 6th time or so... I was on the fence to request a refund...

Such an immersive game, yet the experience is constantly spoiled... I wonder whether R* will give up on PC ports given the poor reception and all the pain, at least on Steam.
Im about 50% through my pc playthrough and so far not a single crash (I had more problems with corrupt saves etc on my oneX)
PC has been pretty much flawless so far

"american distillery" is that the mission with bill, dutch and the rhodes deputy and moonshine?
I had zero problems there either

Bought a game (I knew I was going to buy it) as soon as I've seen that Steam 20% off special and first few hours were great, but now it's crashing every few mins to few dozen mins with that pesky ERR_GFX_STATE error or just crashing with no error.

Grrrrr, don't know what to do, tried everything I've found online so far.

Yes, I'm having the same.
There is one good solution that so far yielded only a single crash the past 5 hours or so. Go to Docs/R*/settings and delete all files with the exception of the system.xml. I do this ahead of each session.
Edit: I run it on DX12, appeared more stable, as Jason also recommends above.

Yeah. At the time it crashed every time I was about to enter the -at the time- heavily fogged forest. Ever since the workaround as detailed above has mostly cured my problem, but I expect issues further down the road.

At least now I can properly enjoy the game!

I've decided to hold off based on reviews and comments here. I have more than enough game-breaking bugs in ED, so I'm going to wait until Rockstar fixes this mess on PC. In the meantime, I'm having fun watching my wife play RDO on PS4. She got her sister hooked on the game, and now they are riding around in their own posse, thoroughly enjoying themselves. So the next time you see a woman in RDO, it might actually be one IRL!

I only wish I could join them someday. Any rumors of cross-play coming to RDO?

I'm still not having any game crashes at all...considering my gameplay sessions are of several hours at a time. Apart from the day one issues, I've had none at all. I automatically switched to DX12 mode as I have an NVidia card...since RDR2 defaults to Vulkan in the graphics settings on first running. NVidia cards don't like the Vulkan api much, so that change before I even began the game was a no brainer.

Switching to DirectX12 was a smart move, and I imagine that's at the core of most issues people are having. Personally I've never experienced a crash while playing (despite not having done what you suggested) but I have had issues trying to load the game save up in the first place. Right after the Moonshiners update I flatout could not get into my save because of the constant GFX_ERR_STATE lock-ups. That actually caused me some considerable panic I can tell you, but then I got it all dialed in and haven't had so much as a stutter since.

Just this. I have a 1080 Ti, and it runs Vulkan like a dog. 😢

I immediately switched to DX12, so I'm glad they provided that option.

One of the early patches undid that setting, and switched it back to the default of Vulkan. I wonder if people who are having issues atm have actually checked that it's still set to DirectX 12.

I had tons of fun in GTA IV online racing (best online experience ever), also I found GTA V online OK. But I just could not find RDR1 online fun, and I justv struggle to see the appeal of online in RDR2. I'm good at car racing, decent in Warships - but actual gunfight? No.

I have a 1080ti too, it was my MoBo that was blacklisted. Still, my issues are not fully game breaking - now, that I empty that folder every time before playing RDR2.
4-core CPUs were lambasted for this game, but at 1440p 75hz, my 7700k was never bottlenecking. Understated CPU.

My wife enjoys the fishing challenges, the collecting of things, treasure hunts, etc. Out of necessity (and much to my surprise), she's become quite the gunslinger as well!

Oh, and the dresses - she LOVES the dresses and hats and fancy clothes :D

So, I am nearing the end of the story mode, and... I hate to repeat myself, but despite the issues, both technical and in some case gameplay, what a game.
The whole thing just stands out in so many ways: depth, graphics, details and the whole story - the character arcs, struggles... not to mention that R* pulled off nobody can for decades, made a compelling and great story in a wild west setting.

Considering the settings are realistic, the game made me think about the struggle for those at the time to adapt to the changes. I mean, looking at the wild west at 1900, and considering the same country becase the no1 industrial powerhouse in 40 years or so is just mind boggling.

I thought Arthur Morgan won't be able to dethrone John Marston, but now I feel like he is an even better protagonist. The magic works so well that I felt completely out of place in St Denis. :)

Anyway, the dark tone of the story is really intense especially at the second half of the game. The only gripe I have is that I was so expecting them to escape to New Austin, and perhaps to Mexico, as I like vast/desolate landscapes... At some points I also felt the action is over the top and perhaps too linear, especially the Guarma chapter, that totally felt like I'm playing Max Payne 3. And I didn't get why Dutch didn't take the gold bar back from the old woman he strangled.
To be honest it feels good that the epilogue is slower and more light hearted, and as an exception to all other open world games, after finishing, I'm looking forward to do cross country trips, hunt, gather plants and so on.

From RDR1 perspective, entering Blackwater and to New Austin (the first and only time so far) was awesome as the map is 1:1 the same, with minor changes such Blackwater having some building just built. It makes me wonder why they went through the pain of remastering almost all of the RDR1 map without meaningful content, if not only for online. How cool would be if they'd release RDR1 story... the setting was really great in RDR1, ranging from the mountains to Mexico... actually I will try to look for places that were present in RDR1, especially Dutch's hideout.

By the way, is it possible to enjoy online without participating chaotic PVP shootouts? It would be great if there were a roleplaying server or something. :)
