New Camera Mode

OMG omg OMG omg OMG!!!!

I just nerdgasmed after seeing this new feature.. This is what I have been waiting for, for so long... this just creates so many new ways to create content...

THANKYOU FRONTIER THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU..

ok.. clean up in aisle 6....

I agree 100%!

Folks like you and Obsidian Ant are going to be able to do some truly amazing things with this new system, and I can't wait to see what you guys come up with! :)

Personally, I have always wanted a pre-set REAR VIEW camera that I can flick on and watch the planet, starport of whatever I am leaving from fade away into the distance. I looked for that simple feature 2 years ago when I first installed ED, and I have been waiting for it ever since!

From what I can determine, it does appear that I will FINALLY be able to setup my REAR VIEW MIRROR CAM! And I am as excited by that as you guys are about the whole package! :D

As for all those whining about the lack of combat options... Seriously? You seriously want to turn this game into a noob fest/arcade shooter? Please find another game! ED isn't about garbage like that.

If it gives any advantage in combat, even if its just as a rear view camera.
Then it should be like any other tool we use.
Target-able, destructible and at a cost of credits.

It wouldn't offer any useful advantages. I would never use the rear view camera for combat for that reason, since the scanners provide all the feedback you need. This is all purely aesthetic, for exploration and all around sightseeing applications.

At least that is how "I" will be using it and based on the lack of combat-centric features, how Frontier expects us to use it.

I just hope "3p is a advantage in combat" crew wont kill this feature... I`m very serious - do not get too attached to the new debug cam, they will try to kill it.

Excellent!

When Eddie started messing with the focal length, coffee came out of my nose.

Tell me about it! Those of us versed in photography are going to have a lot of fun with composing some cool portraits of this game in action! :D

Can't wait to get my hands on this!

Who needs GameContent when you can have a Camera instead.

FD turns their attention away from combat for a split second, and this is the reaction from the PvP crowd. ;)

Im not a PvP Guy,but it would be nice to take some Pictures of Stuff that you havent seen before?

I cant log in anymore because i have done nearly everything, seen nearly everything in Elite, would be nice to see something new in it which has a real Gameplay meaning for me.

I think the Future will tell and maybe i will login again.

And yes,im Martin Lomax. :)

Like video games, photography is an entire hobby in its own right, people spend thousands of both dollars and hours doing it, and enjoying it.
If in-game photography is someone's thing, then this does add game content; it offers deep activity that is easy to do, difficult to master, and integrates tightly with other game mechanics etc

If you're not interested in the camera, then it might not add much content for you, but Elite succeeds by offering players a broad range of different activities, everything from spaceship-building to sim-SETI/signals, and all the various activities that you love will also get their turn getting more content and features :)

Sure! But it would also be nice - or nicer - to be able to take nice photos of the many-many-more things that we've been unable to capture other than clumsily ;)

Given a choice between yet-more clumsy photos of one or two briefly-new things vs better and more interesting photos of all aspects of the full vast breadth of the existing Elite galaxy, I'd personally choose to see photos in the later category.

Why I'm excited about the new camera system:

I have a Vive and a twelve square meters of space to walk around in. One of my favorite things to do in the game is get up out of my chair and explore my ship, both in the cockpit by creatively resetting my head position to extend my range, and by using the debug camera to poke my head get closer to my ship than normal, or to explore surface installations or station interiors a bit.

I've had the Vive for more than six months, and this has yet to get old.

This new camera system will greatly increase my range, both inside the cockpit and out. I'll be able to "walk" around more places, like the corridors leading out of the bridge of a Type-9, looking down at ship from a station's control tower, and many other places I couldn't before.

Why I'm wary about actually being able to control your ship, including firing weapons, using the new camera system:

The first thing that occured to me, as a VR user, is that I'll be able to move my head while in camera mode. While it is certainly true that I won't be able to see the HUD of my ship in external camera mode, I'm not quite sure that this problem balances out the much wider field of view I'd get in 3rd person, especially as a Commander who uses gimbals as a substitute for her very poor aiming skills. You don't really need a targeting reticle with gimbals or turrets, after all. Elite: Dangerous is also very good about providing visual and audio feedback beyond the HUD, and many menu options can be chosen through practice, without having to look at a control screen.

When "looking at Things" is a Gameplay Element of Elite....well,ok.

To be honest,it was great for the first 20x Times to see some Space/Planet/Surface Constellations, but then.....for me its just to late to implement such "little" Feature to see an improvement to the Game right now.

I'm with you. I guess FD must have played around with it and concluded that it doesn't provide any real advantage. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

This has nothing to do with advantage, but with in game options. Finally being able to fly in third person is something really incredible.

Are you serious? Photography is not "looking at things". It's a skill and a challenge, and people get very deep into it.

You don't need to be dismissive (or willfully blind?) just because it doesn't happen to be your hobby. Your hobbies will get turns in the spotlight too; that's how this ride works.

YES! Thank You FD. This looks better than expected and can serve so many purposes. [up]

I hope we can configure hot keys but will gladly take this as is.

It is good to see FD listen to players and back away from the no third person stance.

Am totally amused at how some folks can be so excited about trivial things like this - things that almost every other first person game includes as one very minor feature. Usually it's a simple press of the F4 key or something. That's it, no drama. Amazing. Shows just how content starved this game really is when trivial and often never mentioned features in other games get highlighted here.

BTW for those of us here prior to launch, remember FDev's excuse for not having a feature like this at launch? We knew it was because they didn't have time to implement. But what were we told? A story about how an external view camera would be so unfair for combat blah blah. Soooo why is it okay now FDev? Examples like this illustrate what has led to the mistrust with FDev for many of us. Saying one thing only to do another later.

Not being salty; just realistic.

Likewise, I'm totally amused at how some people are unhappy to see new features. Even if a feature seems trivial (which it isn't), it's better to have it than not. Just because other games already have a certain feature, doesn't mean that there is something wrong with THIS game for not having it.

Not having time to implement and being unfair for combat were both legitimate reasons not to have an external cam. Frontier have finally solved both problems.

If players are going to be as unhappy with new features as they are without, Frontier may as well save the effort and stop developing the game. Fortunately, most players are happy.

We must play different first-person games. I'm sure there must be other games with this kind of camerawork built in, but I don't recall the first-person games I play offering it. And not many of them would inspire me to actually want to go nuts with a detailed camera system if they had one.

I think it's more likely that people are excited because it offers more than you're giving it credit for.

Yeah... I think you're probably drawing an equivalence that I wouldn't. The cameras might not seem very different to you, they seem different to me.

I already pretend my ship has cameras so I can see behind me and I ignore from where it eminates. I already use it as a combat advantage I should have anyway. I'd rather we had multiple cameras around the ship we could switch to to see our blind spots but hey. This will make it easier. Exactly what they don't want. Ha!
