New Mining Ship for Beyond - Looking for feed back before purchase

I get bored quite easily and while I've just spent a week in the black in my AspEX, I now want to build a new mining ship and have a play with the new toys.

This is what I've come up with so far.

Mining Python

I started with the tools for mining and added a DSS, while exploring I realised that if i mapped rings I could see the hotspots for resources. I then went for range under the assumption that it's always good to be able to jump as far as possible and a miner is not that far off an exploration ship if you have to travel to find a decent cache of whatever you're looking for.

I put in the token hull repair limpet but I don't really have the AFM's I would like.
Am I being paranoid or would AFMs be good?
Is this design a duffer and should I do something else?

My max budget is ~ 150 milllion (leaving me around 50 million head room ) but I'd rather not spend all that.

So at the end of this thread I have learned:

The core ( see what I did there? ) equipment for core mining is as follows -

Refinery - if you're only going after specific resources you only need one or two bins
Pulse Wave Scanner
Seismic Charge Launcher
[Medium Hard Point ONLY ]
Abrasion Blaster
Prospector Limpet Controller
( only 1 probe needed at a time )
Collector Limpet Controller ( you may think these are optional but they're not really )
Shields ( you're flying around chunks of exploded asteroid, shields are not really optional )

Recommended : Detailed Surface Scanner - while this isn't strictly necessary it will show you where the hotspots are for various resources when fired into the ring of a gas giant.

Asteroids with resources in glow. The most resources glow VERY bright yellow, they usually have a white lattice in the scan. The ones with cores to mine glow just as much but have a black lattice in their glow. Always stop and check for fissures on these before bothering to launch a prospector.

Fissures - you launch seismic charges at these. They have three strengths - Low, Medium and High

Seismic Charges -these need to be bound to a fire button in "Modules" you launch them at fissures. They can be charged up by holding down the fire button. For best results launch two fully charged seismic charges at one Low strength fissure and one Medium strength fissure. 80% of the time this will be enough to hit the "optimum" power for detonation.

Detonation - when you launch your first charge a two minute timer will start until detonation occurs. You will also see a graph appear at the right side of your screen. The graph fills up as you launch charges into fissures. There are two blue bars in the graph. You want to have the top of the graph in the blue bars and not into the red - one or two blips into the red is ok as long as the "optimal range" box is checked. When this is checked you can either wait for detonation or use the contacts section of the navigation panel to select a fissure with a charge on it and detonate immediately ( 10s count down ) . When detonation occurs be more than 1.5km away to avoid damage and be more than 2km away to avoid sensor disruption. Once the asteroid is split you can fly in between the chunks and let your drones pick up those lovely resources that have been released. Any still stuck to a chunk can be released with a shot from the abrasion blaster.

Limpets - Take LOTS.. you can always dump them if you have too many I usually fill around 70% of my cargo space with them but if you're in a very small ship less than 50 tons of cargo say, then FILL your cargo bay with limpets to start with.

Weapons - You don't need them but if your ship can take them then why not? If you do fit them best engineer them for efficiency.

Speed - I like my mining vessel to be as fast as possible. It cuts down the time spent looking for asteroids with cores if you can move faster through the field. It also helps you run away from NPCs

NPCs - whenever you enter an asteroid field ( belt or ring) thee or four NPCs will jump in shortly after. They are invariably after your cargo. You have three choices.

1) If you're empty - sit and wait. They will scan you, see you're empty, jump away and you can go on your merry
2) Blast THEM, if you're confident of your ship and skills then show them who's boss.
3) Run Away - Get your Good Sir Robin on and bravely run away. They will likely launch hatch breakers so speed is very useful here (see above ) so you can either out run them or at least get out of the control range of the ship that launched them. If you can't outrun in time then a point defence is handy for shooting them down.

You can build a deep core Miner that will get you on the road to riches very cheaply!
16 tons of cargo space that will net you 25 million credits in void opals for only 2.6 million even if you have to manually collect resources this ship will pay for itself at the first core asteroid.

By defense you mean the limpets and the afms?

Which Krait?.. Actually I'll have a look at both :). If I can dump the repair stuff then all the better. Was just watching a video of someone doing deep core in an AspEx.. I coudl buy anoher but I want something different.

If you get bored easily, try a small ship, like a Viper IV or DBX. I find them more enjoyable and engaging when motherlode hunting and you don't feel like it takes forever to fill your hold with goodies.

Make sure you add an abrasion blaster to that build as you will need one after you crack open the cores.

I worked that out immediately after making my post :).

I think I'm going to go with the Krait Mk II build as suggested though the Phantom is soo pretty I might go with that just for that reason.
I have been flying a phantom since it arrived. I had it engineered for just shy of 65ly jump range for explo, and it was great for mining and combat too. But I have just swapped over to the Krait MK2 as it has an extra large hard point plus a couple of the core internal slots are one size up. I have been using it all weekend in combat zones and running those damaged station passenger evacuations (great fun) and it flies as good as the phantom, so I think you've made a great choice.

This is my Phantom Deep Core Miner Theory Craft

Phantom

I've managed to make it more expensive than the Python :D:D but that's because I stuck a 5A fuel scoop in it. I decided I didn't have enough total range and would like more. Again I've focused on Jump Range and speed and maneuverability.

Well that will certainly do the job, although I would swap your prospector to a 1A and put it in a smaller slot to get yourself another size 3 cargo rack, as you're unlikely to need 2 prospectors on the go. I got my phantom to almost 65ly by D-rating most core internals and engineering them to lightweight plus I unlocked the guardian fsd booster.

Noted :) I don't have the rank to buy one though and I never will! I could use a Clipper though.

Just bare in mind the hardpoint placement with the Clipper.

Personally I like the T-10 when I’m happy to mine for ages and a Cobra when I just want a quick burst of mining. Almost anything goes though IMO.

That does sound nice. And no I guess I don't need the all out speed.. I make the changes you suggest. I've not unlocked guardian anything yet. I only found out about that stuff this week ( I only came back to the game last week after 1.5 years away )

Well, still time to grab an SRV and catch the Zende ferry, there is a guardian blueprint site nearby the destination and the first run around those guardian sites is quite atmospheric.

another day for sure. today is for beer, pizza and building this final version of my miner.

Krait Phantom Final

I think I'll go void opal hunting. It's got the range and the scoops to go outside the bubble and 128t cargo.

My fav for a cheap starter is the Keelback, but for core mining I love my orca.

I did think of the orca and I can afford one. But this time I'm going with the Krait Phantom. The nearest station that sells my build in it's entirety is 67 LY away and I seem to be in the only system that doesn't have a sidewinder for sale. ( I was just going to buy a sidey up it's FSD and sell it at the other end )

Any ship for deep core only needs
1 Seismic Charge launcher and 1 Abrasion Blaster.
1 Refinery and Pulse wave scanner.
Collector limpet and Prospector limpet controllers
along with Cargo and DSS

Regarding your Phantom build.
The Seismic charge launcher will fit in the medium slot. you could free up two large hardpoints for weapons if you feel they are needed. As i have yet to find a use for multiple Seismic charge launchers.
Also noticed they are turrets, plan on bringing along a friend?
Every time you drop into a hotspot the game will spawn NPC's to scan you for goodies they can steal. (or always did while i was mining)
As stated prior, a smaller prospector limpet will work just as well, most of the time you are looking at the color of an asteroid and launching a prospector if you suspect it holds what your are looking for.
Im guessing the engineering you have set to the internals was for a reason, but i would recommend Engine focused or charge enhanced over the weapon focus (you dont have weapons and the mining tools use very little)

My thoughts behind it are. if i have valuable cargo i have two options when confronted. Stay and duke it out or run.
If i run i want engine enhanced so i can boost more often, and a A rate shields to last longer before taking hull damage. along with point defense to ward off hatch breaker limpets.
If i stay and fight i need those two large hard points for weapons. and the charge enhanced power distributor will help support that without degrading my boot and shields nearly as bad as weapon focused.

Can't go wrong with the phantom. I like the orca for the boost speed when core hunting. Covers more territory - but the phantom is quick enough for sure.
