New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Irrespective of the perceived (and I personally agree) downgrade, I'm mostly sad about the idea that everything has changed. Engineer sites notwithstanding as these are manually injected with their landscape, all the little landmarks, stations and locations on the ground that one found and occasionally returned to are gone. It's a bit as if all the systems in the bubble had been randomly shuffled around. And with this precedent set, I guess we can expect planets to suddenly change at some other point in the future, say when new tiles get added to the pool...

I know there are billions of planets, but ultimately, that's why it kind of mattered to me that 2 or 3 of them felt familiar. Anyhow, I'll get over it.

This is where this tech fails. The universe is created and determined by chaos.

Procgen math is way closer (and much more unpredictable) to chaos than choosing among a set of patterns and laying them out randomly.

Patterns are a sign of order.
To some degree I agree, but I think fractals underlay the nature of the universe overlaid with entropic chaos.

I came here to post my picture, so thanks for doing the job lol.
So I just flew out to the planet concerned. I didnt have a DSS, so I can't attempt to recreate your image, but for completeness, here's how it looks in the flesh, or at least as much of the light side as I could reasonably see.

The nature of universe is dualism dominated by chaos (increasable entropy)

I don't find any patterns with a quick look. But I only noticed it when I probe it, so maybe the DSS heat map is build in a similar way to the surfaces.

This is now a philosophical discussion but is very connected to this thread.

I actually believe there is order in the universe...only that the rules are so comprehensive...that we are not even close to understanding all of them...we are trying none the less.

With that regards, and for this game, Chaos will do a better job - because it embodies our misunderstanding. What they did looks bad because the set of rules and assets behind it is extremely small.

Your first image is the smoking gun. The equatorial regions you highlighted are definitely repeating. They're just cut and pasted biomes.

If this is what they've done, then it is indeed the final straw. (n)

It might be, I dont know, but it's perhaps worth pointing out that's also the image in the system map, not the planet itself. If I recall correctly, early on in Horizons that the system map often wasnt representitive of the planet itself.

The second image looks like it's of the planet itself? I dont know, is it another system map image cropped?

Again I dont know and OP might well be correct, but as usual there's a lot of people shooting their bolts in this thread.

Yep: messaging individuals on their personal accounts, instead of reporting via official company channels, is rude and naturally results in being blocked (y)
Transcript:
Ed: "if people do want to find out more about you and sort of maybe..."
Kay: "shoot me in space?"
Ed: "shoot you in space, well you don't have to say your commander name, all right, whatever you feel comfortable with, you may like, maybe your Twitter name?"

So you took that to mean: "be rude and message Kay on their personal account about game issues instead of reporting via official company channels."
🤦‍♂️

What I'm about to show you will be the final straw in cementing the new planetary tech system into a failure.

I remember Dr Kay Ross stating on stream that their procedural heightmap system made use of handmade terrain that would then be randomized across. I was worried when I heard this.

Check this out - I'll let the images speak for itself:

Literally all terrain features both from high orbit to low orbit are repeating, hand crafted, and break every little bit hunger for exploration. There is absolutely no desire to go down and explore since all you're looking at is the "randomly" organized set of hand crafted height map bits the developers have made.

Horizons gives a REAL sense of wanting to go and explore. Find planets with unique features.

Planets in Odyssey are no longer unique. They are just reorganised sets of the same features.

These planets were designed with one goal: look acceptable from an on-foot perspective or when looking from a twilight perspective with a setting sun for the atmo effect.
there is only one word I can think of - LAZINESS

it's pretty much how I would describe this abomination of a DLC

Such a huge difference! Perhaps the problem is in the DSS view itself?

Just like me, you are entitled to your opinion, right or wrong. Read my previous posts on social media and linking your account to companies and projects, especially ones that you are extensively involved in and the right to question said account holders.

I can only assume that's either the results of a bug
or
Simply the new tech was not ready for release, but the top management pushed anyways

I'm tipping to the option 2, given the post #82 in this very thread
