New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Read the response of people there - this is the mirror image thread of this one...where people praise the new "tech".

Community manager said "Glad you like it"... because it's here to stay

It's clearly not working properly, regardless of the accuracy of the claims made in this thread. Probably best not to jump to conclusions until they've sorted it out.

Whats even funnier is that they did all these "hand crafted" pieces of terrain, yet the textures are absolutely horrible, to the point where I thought I was playing an N64 game!

All this at sub 30fps too!

Fdev finally dug themselves a hole they cannot get out of.

Boom! done - it's a feature!

See here everyone :

Dev response :

"Hey there - as stated above, this is a result of the new planetary tech and is intended."

The new system is capable of producing realistic levels of detail. It was nerfed to squeeze better performance out of it. Throw in unanticipated bugs and features not working as intended and we see the results. This is the first test of a new system working on trillions of planets. It will take some tweaking to get it right. I imagine there are a few lively debates taking place even now within Frontier on the appropriate balance between gameplay, performance, and planetary detail. If anything, I would be willing to bet that the team who created the planet generation system are as frustrated as us. I imagine their concerns are being weighed against the performance and optimisation concerns by other devs.

If you wanted fdev response - you got it :

Look at the community manager response - basically saying "You welcome"
That's a totally different topic, which highlights an unrelated good part of the new system. Please stop creating drama where there is none.

to be honest, us explorers were already totally fine with completely wasting our time on empty (of any kind of gameplay) proc gen systems. it's not like this is any more of a waste. its more of a player pride thing to tell other people what makes elite different from all the rest.

at least now there is (totally sensible) crashed satellites and stuff on worlds 30k ly from humans.

(not sarcastic) i haven't seen on foot npcs getting spawned yet, so there is that silver lining.

How about this one?

It's confirmed as a feature.

I'm an explorer. And I take pride in the bland uniqueness of my planets. I was hoping this would make the stuff the procgen threw up better and more realistic. Now I'm concerned if I find a nice feature it's a handcraft replicated trillions of times throughout the galaxy. That ma beef.

I'm willing to wait for a response though. And not go trolling Dr Kay on her personal account.

To be honest it's misleading. They confirm the shape of the terrain changed for known PoI. Which was expected. But not the issue we have currently with repetitive looking terrain.

Odyssey planetary tech in a nutshell...

I wouldn't say "clearly". While it seems broken to most of us, there is the distinct chance this is working exactly as FDev intends it to. This might be a purposeful change, fixes or improvements might not be coming.

The feature confirmed there is clearly "known POI locations have changed in the game, bases have moved from flat locations to hilly locations, etc".

Is reading not that common anymore? 🤦‍♂️

I can see how it can be interpreted in several ways...like most things ...but they have been silent ...bad the first thing they say about anything on this topic is - working as intended.

My guess is that it is at least as of now a feature...that they plan on improving on in the following year or two.

don't hold your breath.

fdev is going to go with their standard procedure for when they screw things up and ignore it all until it goes away.

i don't think I've ever seen them defend their actions.

this entire thread is a good way to show just how ignorant some can be...

repeating patterns on planet have been around for many years, it nothing new....!!!!!!!!!!!

"**** it! We'll do it live!"

I knew the whole planets were changing. Which is fine. I knew all the famous landmarks would disappear. Which is fine. I have a whole different beef. :)

I always thought they needed another two weeks of alpha with the whole galaxy opened up. Probably longer. And tweaks to planet generation system should have been made in the alpha. Why go live with a completely untested set of nerfs??
