New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

B2 usage of the same predefined surface block multiple times confirmed.
So, this will be the second, waiting for more ;)
If you don't mind me lifting your picture for reference:

The yellow circle is one that I've seen multiple times on my post.

EDIT: OK well it won't upload for some reason. Is there some kind of protection on images uploaded? All I wanted to do was circle the repeating patterns.

I'm not angry, and you are saying that
1/4settings are identical
2/the setting is worst than horizon

and yet, that's ok. There are no issue there.

I'm sure I can also play the game with 600+fps on the NASA supercomputer, but I wouldn't take that as the base for optimization.
But why youre ppl whining here then? This preview patterns doesnt represent real lod of a planet and tech. Relax.

Boring ice planets bother me less if there are some diamonds in the rough. It actually gives some extra purpose to exploration, finding those rare lovely planets! That's why I left that thread on a positive note, because there was ample proof provided that there are some really nice planets in Odyssey.

But the pictures in this thread (particularly the one I'll include below) that clearly show blatant, obvious, ugly pattern repetition, that really kills it for me. I know we all have different tolerance levels for things, but for me, that's right up there with Elephant Butt Leather and Dancing Disco Shadows. To be clear, I'm talking about the huge macro-level "in your face" canyons and such. I'm more tolerant of small repeating cracks in the ground that you basically have to circle to identify.

BTW, I'm not a fan of repetition in clouds in Horizons, either. Every single planet has a dozen hurricanes going at the same time? I don't like it! Butit's not a game-breaker for me, because I rarely get that close to non-landable planets to observe this, whereas AFAIK the OP is focusing on new landable, explorable planets.

I agree, it does look very bad and it needs to be addressed. It can't stay like this. It's great that people go through the effort of finding and reporting these problems.

So, I did my own research.

I pretty much did a eney minney..... selected a system at random.

Jumped there.

proceeded to fly for 12 minutes since the main star was 300 kls away form the nearest planet.

An took a picture of the first landable planet I found.

I present to you Glaston B5.

Now, can someone be kind enough to point out the similarities, I've been very bad at this game since I was a kid.
I honestly fail to see any.

Edit: just so you know, this is the first time I see this planet.

Edit 2, changed the name of the planet from Gaston to Glaston.

Bugs can and will be fixed, but if this is what they are happy with shipping, and they're "glad we're enjoying it", this is what Elite will be from now on.

Not going to comment how the forum engine does not support their own screenshot format, or that I probably can't attach the 100MB hi-res bmp :D Attached my screenshots of Wyrd B 2, with Ultraforcapture. My favorite one is the last one, I took that off the surface after glide, about 1km from in the air.

EDIT: are you kidding me forum engine, where are my attachments? Okay gimme sec, I need to upload this somewhere.

These ice crags seem to be the same, just mirrored

I think aliens would laugh at earth, if it had geological formations like these.

They are ugly, no doubt.
But as for now I have seen 2 (TWO) "pattern-broke" planets in OD (both here) and "a bit (like: hundreds?) where I haven't noticed this.

Now switch to UltraforCapture and see totally different planet, real one, not approximation.
Sorry, but I thought UltraforCapture is for taking pictures. How or where do you set it when sitting in the cockpit and just looking at a planet on your screen or in VR without the intention of taking a picture ?

It doesn't seem to happen on certain types of planet, those with more subtle variations in regions.

I certainly hope it's a bug that's causing these repeating zones, as it would be odd happening only on certain planets. If so then we've notified FD of a pretty horrible bug for those who like planet exploration.

a preview pattern on the system map.. i can allow (though i wish the other errors and problems in the system panel's rendering of planets didn't exist such as their lighting and texture loading).

a preview pattern on approach in normal space view... no. those lod's should be generated by the stellar forge from the actual planet. We should not be seeing placeholder lod's there.

Yeah, right. Then why my game doesnt look that bad?

I'm not sure we can trust someone who can look at that screenshot, see a blacked out shadowed SRV that's itself casting a shadow that would indicate it's being lit up by light from a direction that should allow us to see that ... as "not that bad"
