Newcomer / Intro New Player Needs Information

I want to plot a course to a new system which is 21.86 Ly away and the actual station is 206 Ls distance.
In the Galaxy map select the destination system and then click the plot route icon, if there is a possible route for your ship it will display on the map and the number of jumps will display at the bottom of the map, if any of the route is a dotted line you will need to take on fuel before then. The route will take about a minute per jump.

Always plot the route after filling the fuel tank, adding cargo or changing modules as the mass of your ship changing would invalidate the route.
But I've watched a number of videos telling me about Supercruise and Supercruise Assist which I have not used so far in the game, only had to use Frame Shift Drive.
From what I understand I need to use Supercruise and Assist to get to the eventual destination of what my plotted course will be.
I'm quite confused as to actual use Supercruise and Assist. I could use quite a bit of clarification on how to use it.
Supercruise is a use of the Frame Shift Drive to travel quickly about a star system as long as you don’t have another star system targeted you can engage supercruise using the same binding as for a jump, you can have a separate binding for it as well.

Supercruise assist is a sort of auto throttle/cruise control it can be useful but is not essential and is usually slower.

I'm using voice commands with HCS Voice Packs and Voice Attack. So I don't know if that will confuse things even more.
I would be obliged for any help in explaining how to use it.

Yes to the former, no to the latter. SCA is not required. And you will need to have an SCA module installed for that in any case.

So, the game knows three kinds of movement in the ship:
  • Hyperjumps, when you go dfrom one system to another
  • Supercruise, when you fly inside a system, starting at 30 km/s, possibly exceeding the speed of light at up to 2001 c
  • regular flight, inside a system, limited to your ship's top real space speed, usually a few hundred m/s

The former two modes use the frame shift drive (FSD) and are (for newbies) unnecessarily confused as the default mapping(s) only assigne the "toggle supercruise" control, which throws you either into supercruise or a hyperjump, depending on whether you have selected a hyperjump target or not. It is highly recommended (about on the same level as unbinding the "jettison all" control) to map the two controls for supercruise and hyperjump to two different buttons, if at all possible.

When you exit from a station, you're in real space. Once you're out of mass lock, you can decide to switch to supercruise if you want to reach another part of the same system or to perform a hyperjump if you want to reach a different system.
Once you've jumped to a different system, you will arrive in supercruise and stay there until you
a) run into the central star or a planet or
b) arrive at your destination and voluntarily toggle into real flight or
c) are interdicted by a pirate or system authorities (which can be fought off) or thargoids (good luck with that...)

Oh, talking about thargoids - if you jump into or out of a system that's controlled by them, there's also a quite substantial chance that your're pulled out of the hyperjump ("Hyperdiction"). If you have a fast, cold ship, just drop a heatsink and boost off. Otherwise, say your prayers and make sure your testament is in order....

I made it to AVAN - Timofeyevich Co-Operative station, this is where all the available modules were. So I bought new Cobra MKIII and fitted it out.
After I was done I was informed as a reminder to set something ! It happened too quick and I missed it. It may have been Fire Groups.
How should I have them set. ?

Yes it would be fire groups which is one of the tabs in the right hand panel in your cockpit, it is where you set which of your two triggers operates what module. You can set different combinations of these things in separate groups which you can cycle through at the cockpit to give you what you need.

How you arrange your weapons and scanners etc in these groups is largely down to personal preference and what you have the triggers bound to.

While there I suggest also visiting the modules tab there is a column labelled priority changing the numbers in that determines when modules are shutdown when you haven’t enough power for everything.
Priority 1 is the one that is shutdown last so essential modules in that, priority 5 is the first one to be shutdown so modules least needed in that.

I have Frame Shift Drive and Thrusters in 1 as without them the ship is dead in space while Fuel Scoop and Cargo Hatch are in 4 or 5 as I don’t mind them shutting down early or when I deploy weapons.
Weapons etc draw more power when deployed than when stowed so if you have a shortage of power deploying weapons can cause stuff to shutdown, I have my weapons at priority 3 so would lose cargo hatch and fuel scoop.

I meant to ask what insurance covers ? Does it cover ship and all modules that I have fitted ?
Or does it just replace the ship and I have to buy all the modules to outfit it again ?

It covers 95% of the cost of the ship and modules fitted you pay the other 5%. You are restored in the nearest suitable station or the last suitable location you docked at.

But if funds are tight you can get a small loan to help and you can select modules not to buy back.

In an extreme case or other circumstances you can elect to take the free Sidewinder back in the starting station.

Just take the time to read slowly through the options so you select the correct ones.

I've got myself into a right mess.
I accepted 4 missions and only done the first one. Was in middle of second and was going into a Hab building and as the doors were closing behind me someone wanted to scan me, but with the doors closed all hell broke loose and I ended up dead. I then was put in somewhere but allowed to leave.
So I got in my ship and launched. I set a course to go back to the system I was originally in (10 jumps).
First jump fine, but after second jump and arriving at the huge star and trying to line up for my next jump everything seemed to go haywire. I was thrown out of FFD and found that my next jump was on the other side of the massive star. I can't even use my fuel scoop to keep me running out. I've been trying for hours to get round the star and I don't seem to be making any progress at just normal full speed.
Now I'm getting failed missions messages saying 70.000 CR fine and if I'm still here trying to get round this massive star my other missions are going do the same.
Any Idea how I can get out of this situation ?
Also assuming I can get out of this how do you pay fines ?

When you get dropped out in a star's exclusion zone (like you just did) - you have to escape by engaging your FSD (supercruise) and line up with the blue circular target graphic that comes up on your HUD (it aligns you directly away from the star) - I forget the wording but it is something like escape vector.

You will get hot, maybe even smoke and sparks but as long as you line up with the escape vector you will survive (maybe a little bit of heat damage).

Good luck

You can reduce the overheating issues by in the modules tab on the right hand panel clicking on power hungry non essential modules and switching them off until you get back into cruise and cool down. The obvious first choice is the shield but anything other than FSD and thrusters could go although switching off life support will expose you to one of the sound teams more disturbing bits of brilliance.

Fines can be paid at the Contacts screen, the same tab where you claim bounties, in a station where the faction is present or at the Interstellar Factors legal office also in some station contacts.
Don’t click on hand yourself in.

Fines are generally only a local issue that can be ignored if you don’t need to work with that faction or at a station they control.

Make sure you select a different destination other than your next jump if it's obscured, choose a planet or moon in your current system, enter super cruise, then you can line up with your next jump. You'll want next target, or you can locate the jump in your left panel.

Hence the tip to bind a key to Enter Supercruise rather than rely on that context-dependant "J" or Jump - it is one of the first things I recommend people to do, (along with disabling the Firing Deploys Hardpoints and Eject All Cargo binds).

Are you throttling back to zero before continuing to fly on ( or using Super Cruise Assist)?

If not, do so, realign yourself to fly away from the star then turn around after about 20 seconds.

Also...

It sounds as if you were thrown into jail after , (technically, even though it wasn't your fault,) failing a scan. You could have opted to take an Apex shuttle back to where you were or where you'd left your ship.

Thanks to all CMDRs who have been helping me along my journey in EDO.
I found just what '0threeleven' had said and managed to get things back on track. I was able to get back to where I originally accepted the 4 missions from.
No mention of me owing credits for failing those 4 missions.
On a side note. Once again you CMDRs out there are excellent. Much Obliged.

Indeed very helpful community imo, and this may seem obvious but, if you haven't already, don't forget to consult your in-game panel-4 'Codex--->Pilot's Handbook' screen. ( lots of good info & basics explained in there )

In my left panel I had a look at 'Transaction' and had 2 fines listed (obviously from last night when I had my problems).
So at a terminal in the concourse I used the 'Interstellar Factor' and paid them (178.000 cr total), but after checking my left panel during another mission I see the fines are still listed.
Is this this normal ? Do they not get removed after payment ?
