New Regions – Why not use the ones already established by the exploration community?

Let's not forget the game has a wider audience now, and any changes or additions to the game now need to be, where possible, fairly inclusive of the entire player base. So just to play devil's advocate, when "the community" is referenced in this thread, in the context of the GMP, what is really meant is a subset of players on PC, rather than "the exploration community on all platforms".

That said, console players are excluded from beta access, VR, volumetric fog effects, HUD colour changes, head tracking, wheel support, etc. etc. so it won't make a huge difference to exclude them from contributing to community exploration/region naming as well.

There's nothing at all stopping console players getting involved with the GMP. All it requires is joining the thread and making suggestions/proposals in there.

Sounds like a generally good thing.... but can't help thinking that some of those player-selected names are rather long and UI-challenging :x

I know that it is impossible to make these changes until the launch, but it will be a very kind move from FD if the names established by the exploration community are merged to the game in future updates.

It's not the "explorer community" though, but the Galactic Mapping Project. There isn't a single monolithic community anyway, they're all made up of smaller communities.

The unofficial region names came from the GMP team, and I'm not sure if they were ever submitted by other players. System / body / etc entries were, but Frontier have already demonstrated in the past that they aren't necessarily going to use those. They used some of the GMP region names a few times before though, but apparently, that didn't mean they'll use most of them.

Bear in mind that all this assumes that the region designations shown on the stream aren't placeholders.

Yes to that idea, I like it I love it, now they got the chance to change that, before the rumors system and whatnot will be to stringent to change it proper. This would be so a great nod towards the hard working communities and you guys deserve it so much. Please FDev do it!

Soo.. are you for or against giving the regions cool names?

A lot of signed, without saying what they want to happen, so I can only assume it's proposal 1. Look at it realistically there's is no way, given how close we are to release, that FD are going to change that much of the structure they have already put in place. It's just not feasible.

Now if they had of communicated this back when the Exploration FFF was supposed to have originally gone live then we might have had time to convince them to make a change along these lines, but alasy they didn't.

I think it's pretty clear that they have plans already for the regions they have set out and, as has been suggested, they will tie in to things that are already in place within the Codex. So asking them to change the layout, or the naming is not just as simple as changing the wording on the Galaxy Map. Just on a side note, I hardly think we came up with the concept of calling parts of space regions.

As they already said this view would be a toggle My proposal would be to implement the GMPs map as a view that can be toggled on and off. That way FD don't need to change anything with the work they have already done, and we can still use the names we made and refer to them as such (if wanted) when creating expeditions.

I agree with this. Having an additional overlay would actually be a pretty cool idea, especially looking at it in the context of say the stellar catalogs where the same star has multiple names and designations depending upon which catalog one is looking at.

They repeatedly mentioned wanting players to feel connected to each other and the universe and I can think of NO better way. Allow US to map the stars and name the areas of the galaxy. Not only is is already in progress and part of the lexicon, it's really well done and it is a HUGE ongoing effort. Look at DW2, for instance, with thousands signed up.

If there is one thing this game lacks, it is a narrative. The player-driven mapping initiative is a fantastic narrative and a way for us to feel like we're actually having an impact on the game.

Repped and signed!
