Newbie Space Trucker advice

Ok guys thanks for all the advice! I’ve got my cobra with a sick paint job that cost me £10 but I had to have it, ladies and gentlemen, the Bat Outta Hell. My HOTAS is arriving Monday, so I’m going to play in the newbie area for another few days to learn to fly with the HOTAS, although I am absolutely itching to leave now.

I like small ships, me.
If you're planning to hold onto the Cobra as your main ship for a while, then when you get out into the wider universe, you may want to look at visiting a guardian site.
Size 1 plasma chargers and size 2 frag cannons are the best loadout I have come up with the the cobra for my preferred close-in fighting style. And one of the earliest engineers you get access to ("Blaster" McQuinn) can mod the fraggers to G3 Overcharged/Screening for you.

Hi! So I suck at combat and need more practice, and while I’ve always wanted to be a space bounty Hunter like Cowboy Bebop, I have also always wanted to be a Space Trucker! So space trucking is what I’m doing. I’m flying around the newbie area collecting courier missions, delivery missions, and source and return missions. For example I just made £200,000 turning in about six or seven missions in one port. I’m nearly at 3 million about 20hours of play. The problem is I’m afraid to leave the newbie area, will the missions outside be too tough? Will they send me on huge journeys across the galaxy? Would the next step be finding trade routes and actually trading instead of missions? I think what I’m doing atm is super profitable, I’m scared to lose that, but I also want better gears and ships. What should be my next steps as a Space Trucker guys?
First of all, welcome to the Galaxy, Commander!
Second, let me add my voice to people who tell you to get out of the PFZ - you have no idea how restrictive it is in there. Get into the real Galaxy, find a base, and get to work. :)

I advise you to fly to Ehecatl - it's a simply MASSIVE system right outside the Zone with a LOT of Stations and tons of work for a willing Commander. Cut your teeth on real Trading, and get yourself a T-6 when you can; it's an excellent little space-truck. (Great view from the cockpit too).

From there, you should have the knowledge and experience to push out farther into the Galaxy, and eventually find your own home AWAY from the PFZ.
Oh - and pro-tip: you know those 'Explore the Galaxy' missions you're seeing? The ones that tell you to leave the PFZ and collect 100,000cr? Go to every station in the Starter Zone and collect them all before leaving. It'll give you a couple million in the bank - a good way to begin.

Now get out of the kiddie pool!
:)

Kind of annoyed the Cobra is available in newb zone, spent £10 decking out the livery of my Adder as I thought I would be keeping it for some time.

You probably should keep it if it's not too late - the Adder is very cheap to have transferred across the Galaxy after you upgrade, rebuy is almost nothing, perfect for practicing things that may cause your ship to explode :)

I shipped my starting Adder to Colonia and back among others, it's always fun to fly the ship you started in once again.

Yeah reinforced the hull and flying armed. I’m not into this strip everything down except cargo holds thing. That’s not sensible.
Actually it is Cmdr.

As you progress more into the game & can afford to buy B or A grade Modules on your Ships, you will/can certainly be Engineering those Modules.

As eg, a 5 Class FSD Module will fit ANY Ship into a 5 Class FSD Slot , if you have Engineered say a 5A FSD module at Farseer's base, it's best to strip & Store that Module before you sell that Ship. Should you purchase a Ship later that also has a 5A FSD slot....simply transport the Stored Module & install to the new Ship - saves time re-engineering & finding all those mats again.

Oh yeah I would do that, that’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about stripping a ship except cargo space, so it can have maximum capacity and lowest weight, no hull reinforcement at all or anything, and ship cargo in that. That’s not sensible. My Keelback is military grade composite and two 2 size hull reinforcements.

Oh yeah I don’t sell ships! I’m going to upgrade my Adder after I’ve got my T7.

You should check out a Python when you make enough money. I've made hundreds of millions in mine plus full Admiral and Duke. Medium size, can land anywhere. Hauls 280T. No guns, no hull reinforcement, small shield with a couple of boosters. The key is, it never loses the interdiction mini-game. If you never have to fight, you never get destroyed. I have died twice in it, once of my fault for flying DAF and not being able to handle the controls. Second seemed like a bug but I don't blame my losses on bugs but it never happened before and hasn't happened since. If you want to see the build I can plug it into Coriolis and post it. Glad you are enjoying the game, now get out of the newbzone and experience what the rest of the galaxy has to throw at you.

Always the Rebuy...
Expect to lose a ship... and learn by it.
Do the training missions.
Do all the training missions.
Do all the training missions again.

DO NOT expect PVP to be the same as PVE.

Just get out of the noob area... Just do it. Just get out there!

ps. Love the awesomeness of your enthusiasm, welcome to Elite Dangerous and your ship looks dope.
Fly Smiling Cmdr.

My Cobra has Long Range Cytoscramblers and AX Multicannon, obviously that takes a while to achieve.
Zachariah Nemo is better for engineering Frag Cannons.
Definitely keep hold of the Cobra. There isn't really a case for selling off any hull, you won't be short of credits for long (TBH I would cherish the time that you are short of credits, it's not really the same once you become a billionaire).
