No Single Player Offline Mode then? [Part 2]

Its never too late mbpoblet ... sometimes it takes a little while to realise things.

What is important is that FD are entering into a dialogue with people.

Do you meditate? I am amazed and a bit jealous by your positive and somewhat naive attitude. The only reason why you are seeing that messages was not because of honesty and integrity FD has shown since the start of this fiasco but because of 10,000 of pages of complaints! As well as this;

Online-Only Elite: Dangerous Sparks Refund Backlash - http://www.gamespot.com/articles/online-only-elite-dangerous-sparks-refund-backlash/1100-6423711/

What scares me about this is, that while that is certainly your choice, to play all your games online, what happens when the CHOICE to do either off or on line goes away? Do those who prefer playing games offline just get the shaft and get told to take a hike?

The point is, everyone is entitled to play the way they want, but the trend these days seems to be moving towards maintaining a connection for everything. That is not good. Sooner or later, you won't have a choice if you don't start backing up fellow gamers who like to play a different way, no matter which side you are on.

To me, any choice us gamers had whether online/offline play would become the future trend ended 10 years ago when Half Life 2 (brilliant game) required Steam (awful back then, not-great-but-good now). It sucks but the gaming industry has been moving that way for a long time, and personally I don't mind. Server outages happen; other games are there to be played.

While I despise games that use monthly subs, pay-to-win micro-transactions, intrusive advertising or Horse-Armour-ish DLC to support them, I'm happy to buy & support games from companies that don't follow those paths. That ED requires less bandwidth than a 56k modem I find a benchmark for other MMO centric companies to follow :)

Really positive move, and the fact that you've made this post personally sends out the right message.

Yes... very positive but only if this was done when off-line mode was taken off and people asked for refunds. Now this is 101 example of DAMAGE CONTROL.

Realistically.... i don't care... rebate my money and do not expect anything from me ever again FD.

I would like to see damage control parties on bigger ships in Elite offline :D

I meant that for a lot of backers the damage - mostly to our trust in Frontier Developments, and in David Braben in particular - has already been done, and that it won't get fixed with refunds (particularly given that the people taking refunds will be leaving the community, that will be diminished by that loss).

Besides that... it remains to be seen whether the apparent split in the community can eventually be healed. :(

Thats 2 things, so:

(1) Damage done however time heals everything. The people who leave will be better off as they can put it behind them, and those that are left (hopefully) are here for the betterment of ED.
(2) See point (1)

I was very unhappy with FD and also concerned with the longevity of the game as this issue could damage FD beyond repair and put the game as a whole in jepardy. FD, albeit a little slow, are trying to sort things out so its up to us now to work with them. I am very heavily invested in this game and want to see it succeed for many reasons but not at the expense of backers. With the process starting to fix that caveat I see no reason for the rest of us to start off where we left off - Beta 3.9 tonight and Release 1.0 soon.

ED is a damn good platform for FD to build upon and it can only get better from here on in.

Now you're just making things up...
I don't blame you for doubting me. I have doubts myself. I may have dreamed all of it, but there I sat, at the customer's office, HDMI cables in hand and I find additional cables in the monitor boxes, of all places.

Better late than never, Papa. The gesture has been made, a classic olivebranch. You can accept the gesture and fall into an awaiting state, or you smirk at the gesture and keep spewing vitriol.
I choose the former. What say you? ^^

Unsurprisingly, yes. My gaming PC has a permanent connection to the internet, so why should I play them 'offline' as you put it? Those that were bought through an online store, downloaded via an online store, are certainly played online. When my internet dies occasionally? Damn, I go to the pub or see the family (in order of preference ;))

If I commuted a lot, felt the need to travel with a gaming laptop and felt I had to only play ED, I'd use my 3G mobile & tether the connection. No real biggie, but hey that's just me.

This could be hard for you to believe... but not one of your points makes any difference. At no point in time did any of us ask why you feel the need to play online or if you use 3g mobile and tether.

This thread is about FD deciding that they are going to remove something they promised and not tell anyone till the last moment. Further more this thread would not exist if they actually refunded the money of those people who were not happy with this decision and the way this was handled!

I've seen 12 pin ruggedised connectors inserted into 6 pin sockets and all sorts.
(As a joke) "How many hours of hammering to get that cable in?
(Serious) "About two."

EMERGENCY EMERGENCY. THIS THREAD HAS BEEN DECLARED A DISASTER ZONE. EVACUATION OF THIS THREAD HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED.

Please stop what you are doing and listen carefully to the following announcements.

If you are perfectly willing and able to play Elite Dangerous in the online or online solo modes, you are pouring fuel on the fire. Please proceed calmly to landing pad 39, where a heavily armed Imperial Clipper will escort you to safety.

If you have a genuine reason that you cannot play Elite Dangerous in online solo due to an unavoidable lack of internet connection during the only times when you can play, please proceed to landing pad 19. Grief counselors will be on standby during your journey to the nearest unregulated space bar. You will also be provided with a free copy of the secret instructions for how to get the sound working in JJFFE. Important information follows: Frontier developments have not, repeat not, programmed an offline mode. All developers will be busy launching the game, killing bugs, adding features, and taking their Christmas holiday until at least February. Even if they did change their minds, no effort would be put into this until February at the earliest, and it would not be ready until the at least the Summer. Therefore we suggest that after drowning your sorrows and sobering up, you return later. We expect any remaining contamination to have gone by then, and you can return and discuss other issues and options.

If you are here complaining about LucasArts' promise that Star Wars 1 would have an enjoyable mode, please proceed to landing pad 42. You are in the wrong thread and will be given free transit to the correct forum.

If you choose to remain in the area, it will not affect your right to a refund, and may put you in danger.

Be warned that we expect smouldering arguments to continue for the forseeable future. There is also significant risk of incursions by pirates, hell bent on forcing the creation of a free copy of this thread.

The last evacuation ship is expected to leave at 22.49. Please remain calm.

I would also choose the former in the same situation. I would have liked to play off-line, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it, not going to stamp my feet demanding a refund, and not going to vilify a company as a consequence. Frankly, the lack of off-line mode for me is far less detrimental to the game than Mass Effect 3's awful ending, and my limit was to simply state that I would not be pre-ordering any games from EA, but rather wait and see what peoples' opinions were.

The kind of vitriol that some people are kicking up over this refund for no offline issue is just insane in my opinion. It's taking the issue far too seriously.

If anyone has a legitimate beef with refund issues and so on, file a complaint with proper channels and take it to Trading Standards, but going online to character assassinate and libel a company is not on.

Though I am not bothered by the decision to remove offline play, I can certainly understand why some might be upset. For me the Elite universe has a great deal of sentimental significance. So I suppose that makes me a bit of a fan boy. I have for the most part decided to be open minded and objective (as much as I can manage) when it comes to evaluating the pledges vs the delivered product. So far I have been very pleased with all the work that has gone into this game. As a longtime Elite /Frontier fan I am excited to recapture awe inspiring experience that I got when I loaded up an entire galaxy from a floppy. I have never been a fan of exclusively online games the reasons have been made abundantly clear in this thread. That being said, I have rarely felt that a game developer "got it", that is to say that they understood what fueled my passion for gaming. I feel like Mr. Braben gets it, I am willing to endure the inconvenience of online play in order to see his fully realized vision. I knew nothing about him when I first loaded Elite into my Commodore 64, but even back then I felt like whoever made that game was a kindred spirit. The fan-boy in me wants to believe that David Braben is going to do it again, to make a game that captures the excitement, awe and mystery of what I remember. So far, the experience has not disappointed. I look forward to future releases/updates with excitement that I have rarely felt for games. I hope we can all find the fun that we are looking for. My only regret about the game is that my father is no longer alive to share it with me.

Empty words from FD. I was lied to many times to take this seriously. Once they refund money to their supporters they will earn some credibility back!!!

If somebody screws up, the only thing you can ask of them is that they recognise their screw-up and try to put it right. What do you want? Blood?

What planet are you on? Seriously? This is what you came here to post?

Henna's point is well received. Your response is just yet another example of insulting behaviour that serves no purpose except in derailing those points.

Most games with the kind of variety planned for ED and the evolving galaxy in the game do require an online connection. Your incredulity will not change that fact. FD have explained that the game they want to make would be too static and lifeless without being able to access online content to allow this to happen. I have no reason to doubt them in this. It's not like they're doing it personally to make people use their internet connections.

In light of this, your comment was not helpful. What planet is Henna on? Seriously? That was what s/he came here to post? is not a helpful or constructive response in a forum where there is already enough unwarranted insulting behaviour on both sides as it is.

Perhaps you should remember this before commenting again.

How have they intentionally deceived you personally? I'd be really interested in your evidence that they set out to deceive you personally.

I agree entirely, the damage has been done now unfortunately and we now have to put up with the vitriol of these same people clapping themselves on the back for a job well done.

Such a shame so close to release and although i can understand the bitterness to a degree the fact that threats, character assassination & even slander has been used by people to make their "point" whilst ruining the forums for the vast majority of the players is really a disgrace.
