That would have been a vastly better wording. Whomever is in charge of the newsletter announcementa has been very tone-deaf in the past as well. The Alpha discount, Sol as a restricted system, but with a beta perk, the last minute beta discount...
The dev diaries and other videos have been great, but the tone of the newsletter is quite often a little off.
I doubt it would have been a case of "nobody" having cried out, but maybe this thread would be only half of what it's now.
I doubt the message about communication style will get through. It has been drowned in the sea of indignation :/
All this talk of legal action though is knee jerk bluster .. and does not do anybody any good. And to be honest the majority of people talking about going down the legal route are more than likely just trying their luck to get extra money out of FD ...
It's pretty much a given that when lawyers get involved, the only people who really win are lawyers. That said, given how much some KS backers pledged, not to mention how much some people have invested beings unpaid testers for the Alpha/Beta, it's not out of the question that FD's bumbling to date may push some who are invested (financially and emotionally) to seek legal recourse. It certainly doesn't help by suggesting those people are just money grubbing. If someone already feels aggrieved, dismissing their anger rarely serves to diminish it. If you want to push people into doing stupid things, I certainly can't stop you. But I would suggest trying to be angry that other people are angry. That just feeds on itself until everybody loses.
I have supported some Kickstarters and will very likely continue to do so. I know and accept the risk involved. Are you suggesting that we should base our decisions wholly on distrust, assumption of lies, and worst case scenarios? If so I don't see anything getting kickstarted!![]()
@Wyzak - there will be more information coming soon. We will be issuing further details. We're not ignoring anybody by waiting, we're letting the dust settle, and we're making sure that we get the right message across.
@mdevil666 - We'll get the formal information about that to you as soon as we have it.
@Nick - as Jedra explains, we'll be offering refunds on a case by case basis, more information on that soon.
Thanks guys - we truly appreciate your support, and sincerely hope you understand the reasons behind the decision. The offline mode was impossible to create without compromising the quality of the final product.
Cheers.
Ed
I don't buy games before release anymore. I used to but my experience with the x-rebirth debacle poisoned that well. To be honest, Egosoft have patched and repatched over the last year and the game is reasonably playable now.
However, I was again tempted to pre-purchase ED and play the betas as it is a game I played extensively back in the 80's and I envisaged a fully updated version of that game with stunning graphics and a few extra tweaks made possible by the CPUs and cheap memory available today.
I checked myself and put away my credit card and am I glad I did.
I wish nothing but success for ED and I hope that all who play are delighted with the game but it is not for me. I want the updated Elite I was hoping for, off line and personal so back to the latest incarnation of x-rebirth which is the nearest to my vision I have found so far.
Good luck all.
Ed has actually posted a couple of times on Kickstarter, not sure why it's not also been posted here as similar questions have been raised:
How is anyone expected to read every post here.
It would now seem to be impossible to stop the circling of discussions in this thread.
A confused, frustrated and at times ugly monster has been created here and any attempt to be specific by starting another thread is impossible also.
Painful to say the least
Someone from Frontier has to come out from the bunker, wave a white flag and make a statement (in non marketing garble) and try to put this fire out.
That's not as bizarre as it might seem - you have to think about differences between game time and real time.
Say you are planning a trade route - yes, over the course of game time, you want the universe to be dynamic. Now, say you commit to something, for some reason you can't play the game for a couple of days. You come back and find that the profitability has massively changed, because other gamers have affected it over the course of real time.
If it was real-life, you would monitor the situation, and jump in when you need to. None of us can commit to simply jumping in to play the game at the drop of a hat, so a universe that is too dynamic over real time can be a problem.
Look at something like Football Manager - that's a dynamic world during game time. Games are simulated, players are bought and sold, managers fired and hired, teams promoted and relegated, all outside of the sphere of influence you have with the one club you are managing, and none of it is pre-determined. But all of that evolves in game time - i.e. only progressing as you play the game.
You see the words "Legal action" thrown around all over the place over a broad range of games these days.
Can someone give me one example where a minority group has actually succeeded in any product change by going through other channels because I have yet to see it.
In a way I am very sad. I have waited for a modern day elite for years, and now the reality is, that there will never be one. Just another MMO impersonator.
Yeah good luck with that. Its head in the sand for Frontier with their poor unpaid mods having to run around piling every other attempt to discuss this onto this one giant heap. Which ironically just serves to make this threadnought look all the more impressive.
The more this drags on the more I lose any respect for Frontier and crew. I would expect this behavior from the likes of EA or their ilk, but... bah, whatever.
There are a percentage of people of that are asking for a refund simply for the 'outrage' and its pretty pathetic in all honesty.
Asking for a refund or taking legal action because you are unhappy with the decision or the way FD have handled it is pretty low ...
This.
I have a perfectly serviceable internet connection, but very limited 'play time'. I don't want to be potentially playing catch up all the time because the world changes when I'm not there.
