No Single Player offline Mode then?

So why not give us a galaxy generated with a different seed?

Michael basically said in that post that it is possible to make offline-solo. But they just don't want to do that. Which only means they want DRM. Nothing else. Promise broken.

Far be it from me to engage in technological elitism (pun intended) but if you lack the ability to download and run a game online you shouldn't have opted to support a product that to the best of my recollection was never specifically mentioned to be available on CD/DVD media.
Oh, really?
Kickstarter said:
Physical DRM-free boxed edition of "Elite: Dangerous" plus all rewards above (please note: the disc in the pack is simply an alternative way to install the game - it will have the same online account code whether installed off disc or downloaded digitally).

How very ignorant.

? it worked before they(he) cant get it to work now.
I dont expect a fully galaxy wide simulation running on my poor little puter, the simulation would only represent systems you might jump to soon (locally) everything else would be procedurally generated as needed

The problem here is that you'd have access to the server which isn't something we'd want to allow as it contains the secrets of the galaxy. Which was also an issue with an online version.

Michael

Simply (at least in principle) - remove all those secrets from the publically released server software. People who depend on the offline version would certainly rather play an offline version that had no Thargoids, for example, than not being able to play at all.

And that´s a decision that was surprisingly made this week?

I don´t believe a single word.

Hi Michael, do you have any comments on the long term future of the game. If at some point years into the future, Frontier decide not to support the servers any more, would you expect that the game is dead at this point?

This is why Kickstarters for games is a controversial way for devs to raise cash. Kickstarters are donations given to profit generating entities. All they owe you are payouts related to stretch goals. These are contractual promises. Roadmaps and promises related to game dseign and gameplay are always provisional on implementation based on developer decisions and are always stated and understood to be so.

In short, I doubt there is legal recourse to expect your money back. The company COULD give refunds based upon these changes, however, they probably aren't required to do so. You are not an investor in this process, you are voluntarily donating cash to a corporation. If you are going to change your support, ask for a refund, start charge back proceedings with your credit card (knowing this will cause a ding against your credit rating) and check with a lawyer about your true legal standing in your country, or within the UK.

The online servers provide all of the data and processing for the galaxy, interactions between players and all transactions of value. Without it there isn't a game. We always intended that the way to play the game would be online. We had hoped that we could do an offline variant, but as the game progressed the online requirement superseded that. It wasn't an easy choice to make, but to stay true to the game we set out to make we had to make this choice.

Michael

Well Michael, as long as FD are prepared to offer refunds to EU citizens who made Store pre-purchases based on the fact the law has been broken with regard to the pre-sale stating for off-premises contracts of, "the functionality, including applicable technical protection measures, of digital content, then FD can do what they choose to do.

This thread could really use a poll.

Personally, I never intend to play offline so it was not a factor, but I feel for those who were promised offline.

Because that then becomes another product we have to create and support and that just isn't possible. We have considered many alternatives to see if we could make this work, but unfortunately this is what we've had to do.

Michael

So how do I get a refund? I pledged based purely on the fact that an fully offline versions was possible. This is clearly not going to happen so I want my £200 back.

I think it is very possible to have offline mode, but just as blizzard did with the PC Diablo3, Call of Duty, and Battlefield3-4, they want to control your experience. If you believe, they can create a virtual galaxy that is 400 billion systems, but don't have the ability to make it offline, you are very gullible. If the software exists on an online server that runs all the code transactions, it can exist at home, on your computer.

Yes you can run a market at home no problems

BUT its your market - when 500 others descend on the gold mine you have found the prices will fall like a stone, when the imperials decide they fancy a bit of the action in your space and piracy goes through the roof interdictions will go upwards and harder

You'll miss out on all of this but yes your cobra can try and change the market if you wish and influence the galaxy

What this say more than anything is not that a few wont be able to play offline but that this galaxy is going to be ALIVE with events and happenings that we will all influence.

One day someone will find a thargoid and then slowly but surely they will make their plans against us and WE have to be ready

But play on your own if you want in a very static galaxy

Sorry Michael,

It's a big promise FD just broke to a lot of people.

What, you mean apart form the DRM-free physical media, playable in solo off-line mode that I pledged for?

Have you actually read the thread? For many of us, it isn't about the availability of an internet connection - it's about what happens when the lights go off at FD.

You really believe that they would just switch this off just like that because it isn't cool anymore? guess what all of us will make that happen if we continue whining and complaining about every last bit like a lot have done especially since the last beta release. What is the incentive to keep going then?
These guys have literally worked their asses off so you can play pretend starship commander on a donation budget. And they have done this with a smile through a hailstorm of criticism from frankly a ton of undeserving ingrates. Give them a break!
