No Single Player offline Mode then?

Which could happen .. That could also happen to Netflix, Spotify, Sky, Itunes, Steam .. Etc .. Etc ..

Unless we go back to good old trusty non up-datable physical media that will always be a concern. I can bet a fair few people moaning here use at least one of the aforementioned services. Which ALL require a connection at some point on a regular basis.

Your worrying about something that quite frankly isnt in the great scheme of things worth worrying about.

So someone paid £40 for a copy of ED, five years down the line FD decide to turn the servers off. I would say that is money well spent personally.

Really are you going to cry over £40 for five years of gameplay? The reality is that the game will probably last a lot longer than that in one form or another. In the end it makes me laugh what people 'worry about'. Your worried about the longevity of a £40 game. What if you £5000 Itunes account suddenly became useless, then what would you do?

Get a grip here people ....

I see your point but some people paid many hundreds of pounds for a game that they thought they could own and use forever and play without outside dependency factors like servers. Many of these people would not have paid the many hundreds of pounds for just another connect to service.

Michael Brookes i have to say is that you have the patience of a saint , how many different ways are there to say sorry we cant do it

Enty

Well probably the first way would be to say "sorry we can't do it". Instead of how it actually happened, in the newsletter, on a line of text, buried away.

If I paid $100 for a videogame, I would expect that game to work for an extremely long time (more than five years).

I have PC games from more than a decade ago which I still install and play frequently, as well as games for my original super nintendo which I can still go back and enjoy. Games which are 20+ years old.

You might like wasting your money, but the rest of us don't, and we expect our products to be useable for a long time.

So some people won't play the game at all because they might not be able to play it when the servers go down in XX years?

Absolutely tragicomic.

This is my point. If we don't know, how can we argue that is was not enough?

Agree Kerrash but that dont mean that people are not feeling spolied when they didnt get what they were intended to get.
Think the reaction on the wall in the next days will go in this way.
The problem is the lack of communication i think. If Frontier had provided this communications much more earlier in the dev process, noone will be there posting.
Thoses who backed with offline view are pretty well in their right to ask for a refund and i hope they will be refunded.
I continue to trust in FDEVs hopping we will get at least this offline bulk. Frontier canit hide from this reaction on the forum, not at 1 month of the release.
I think that David has to come there and explain solely and truly what it was intented, why they didn't communicate and give apologize to all customers that have bought ED for an offline package.
He said himself that there will be an offline game on reddit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comme..._braben_cocreator_of_elite_creator_of/c7ocvoj Read it.
So it's normal to come and say .. allright we missed that.

Except everyone who backed through kickstarter (and probably the people who backed through the store on this site) literally cannot get a refund.

If FD would provide me with a refund, I'd be happy to accept at this point.

If you seriously want one, I would try, if you havent already.

How do you know? If this game tanks on release (which is likely given it's current development) FD could shut down, and the servers will go with it.

Then we all wasted $100+ dollars, didn't we?

Personally I'd have wasted about $3500 if that happens.

If your criteria of supporting a game before release is that you need to be 100% certain that you'll be able to play it forevers and evers and evers, you probably shouldn't have bought into the beta.

Even with the offline mode, according to you the game would tank, Frontier'd go bust, and you'd be sitting with a offline game which is very far from being playable and exciting for more than a few weeks.

What is people's issue with DRM? Do you really want the game to be pirated etc?

No but then David himself has said that Piracy has actually helped him sell product in the past.

Look I work in the Flight Simulation industry and trust me there is one of the worst set of pirating groups for a 'nitch' sector in gaming and it's .. the Flight Simulation industry, it costs us hundreds if not thousands of dollars in lost sales often we release a product and within 24 hours you see it on the torrent sites etc and part of you wants to scream and rant because every one of those 'pirated' copies is a potential sale that has gone.. and yet at the same time we've had people admit that they actually went out and brought the product because they pirated it and liked it and wouldn't have brought it otherwise.. so some of those 'lost sales' become sales.. because they generate a sale that wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Am I saying that you should pirate? No, I HATE piracy with a passion for the above reason It costs me money on the time I've spent programming, but even with D.R.M Things still get pirated that's simply fact.

Starcraft 2 - online DRM - Cracked and pirated within 2 days.
<insert major application with drm> - cracked and pirated within a month.
etc etc.

The thing is D.R.M doesn't stop it, it just makes it harder on the legitiment users because it limits them, while the pirates.. they just use the cracks and the like anyway. but this is OT to this so i'll leave it there ;)

You can because the systems haven't changed. It's improbable that you will be able to run any game on windows in 20 years.

The same reasoning like this morning. Nothing new. Nothing solid.

Thats very true, I can't disagree with you, but lets consider a fictional scenario, what if.. for some odd and unknown reason, Frontier go bust next March and they have to close the servers then? (no, I'm not saying its likely, but I'm just pointing out we are at their mercy for our gaming/entertainment. I'd much rather there an an offline option 'just in case we need it one day')

And this will be the ONE and ONLY valid reason for having offline mode.

No it's not the only reason.
I want an offline mode so my Galaxy is explored only by me.Solo online doesn't provide that. The Galaxy will get explored and information of what is in each galaxy will spoil the game I want to play.
It's a spoiler for me.Solo online affects my fog of war.People are messing up my unknown Galaxy. It ruins my role playing.

I agree. But this could not logically be done without compromising the online component. It would open the game up to easy exploitation.

Isn't that pure speculation? That is "security through obscurity" at best. People figure out the network protocol in any case and create bots and cheats and hacks.

I see absolutely no technical or security reason why they couldn't offer a single player offline server. They just don't WANT to deliver what they promised.

It's a choice for DRM. You should just call it how it is.

Exactly.

The decision has been made, complaining over and over will make zero difference.

If you really feel the need to seek a refund do so and please leave these forums for those that still want to a part of the project.

Never have i see a forum full of such vitriolic & self important whining.

Why some people feel the need to write such long winded diatribe is beyond me, just move on.

Well this game being "fun" is a completely different problem which I have little control over since community made mods which made games like freelancer last for more than a decade online have pretty much been ruled out at this point.

The point is, the feature was promised, now the feature is confirmed not-in, and people are rightfully upset about it. Just because we backed in beta / alpha doesn't mean we forfeit all right to complaining about the game.

So you just willingly bend whenever anything happens that you don't like?

It makes people feel better, it's a standard form of grief. You'll notice, if you watch, people go through the same stages of emotion.

The difference is not an internet connection.

The difference is not being able to play the game by anyone once the servers go off.

That situation is hopefully, years away. It has been suggested (not promised) that FD would look into ways for us to continue to play. How it might be achieved is anyone's guess at this point.

I think that we have to say sorry to you that we are messing with your real world too.

Just forgive us....if we only could have those ships in real we defenetly left this galaxy to YOU..... and YOU ALONE.
