No Single Player offline Mode then?

don't try to argue with fanboys, they don't think like normal people.

God, we are the fans of the same game, we have supported the same game and now they are attacking us because they got what they wanted and we did not get what have been promised to us and what we have backed up!

And we have all backed up the same product! Maybe we are not cool enough since we do not understand that multiplayer Elite is the only truth and that Elite is all about multiplayer since 1984...

Don't get me wrong, to follow my analogy maybe the tree missing in one of the tallest, one some find to be the most beautiful for the nice squirrels, but burning the rest of the forest because of it is quite harsh.

Obviously they don't want that. Computing power back then was more powerfull but today is very limited so no offline play anymore...

Sorry but your bolded statement makes no sense at all...

Surely that we got more powerful computers! You know about Moore's Law? Over time, the technology always improve in period of time. In other words, compared to previous, our systems are much more faster and more powerful which we are capable to doing this based on that FD's method in previous time.

Sure, it might increase hardware requirements slightly but it should be not too bad considering that this game engine is well optimized (somewhat, since there is some minor issues such as lagging in supercruise near planets/rings, lag in stations, etc.) but nonetheless, it's pretty well optimized. I think they can do it but for some reason they don't want to.

My post was sarcasm

Yeh, that's what they said.
Like they said there would be an offline mode. Flip a coin?

Maybe it will be "unacceptable" for the company's accountant and the missing ships will make up the core of the first DLC. *shrug*

This isn't about you or me. It's about selling product and what you can get away with.

this is only about elite: dangerous - an update after 30 years of a landmark title in computer gaming history. elite was first and foremost a technical, game design & scientific marvel against many odds.

i think DB/FDEV are rather excellently placed to deliver that update. somehow that is all that matters, and my trust and money is with DB/FDEV on this, and not anyone else.

What really drove it home for me (I mean, apart from everything else) was this -

~2000 posts ago
Just as a general note, as with pretty much everything on the web these days, video game news sites are metric driven to a degree that would make your head spin. If you want more pressure to be applied it might be an idea to go find a news item on this, then comment as much as is reasonable and hit F5 or stay engaged on a session to an unreasonable degree. Because the gawker/gamespot/etc kids are certainly being measured on how much interest the stories they write on this attract.

They proceeded to help fill up every single news site going with 350-500 (seriously, by FAR the dominant news story by comments/pageviews compared to almost every other item) something comments guaranteeing that pretty much the one thing people know about Elite a month out from release is that it doesn't have offline mode and they did some shady stuff reneging on kickstarter promises.

Couldn't help it. They just couldn't.

Your analogy isn't terribly good. For some people, offline mode was a major selling point; for others it's not just preferred but necessary. Trivialising that is rather unfair, no?

You think I'm trivialising this feature? Consider that from our point of view some raging posts seem to trivialise the whole rest of the game. To quote the borderline Alex988 post, I wonder who is the most "normal".

I wonder what stage David Braben is at?

Denial, though I'm not convinced he went through anger or that he'll experience the last three. I'm wondering if denial isn't his constant condition.

I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't really the beginning of the end for FD. It seems terribly melodramatic doesn't it? And I suppose it is. But when I look at the problems in the game that were evident months ago and are still evident now, the way things are being cut out and the clumsy attempts at spin, and DB's manifest inability to get a grip on this issue and all the anger resulting from that......

It's just a feeling.

This. Very much this. For some reason, all gaming companies get these die hard supporters that will defend them even when their actions are utterly indefensible, which is why they keep getting away with stuff that would send most other businesses bankrupt. I mean, when people buy a car, a remarkable feat of engineering requiring the combined efforts of experts from several different fields ranging from mechanics to metallurgy to electronics, they rightly expect it to be exactly as described and to work flawlessly from day 1

Err no. When I buy a brand new car (and I currently have had one for a year or so), I buy it on the understanding that it has a manufacturer warranty and that things do sometimes go wrong in production and that only given an infinite amount of time and an infinite budget could a car manufacturer produce a perfect car. Obviously an impossible task. It's the same with my house. I bought it brand new from the developer and it came with a "snagging list" of things that needed fixing or re-doing because the house builder didn't get it 100% right first time. There's a 10 year guarantee on the property too (structural).

With software you get diminishing returns from increased testing anyway. You can get 10 developers to test it for 1000 years, or 10,000 players to test it for 1 year. Your budget wouldn't stretch to the former. All it needs is an understanding that making software is hard and that making bug-free software is impossible.

And this is one of the biggest disappointments for me. Its the same issue I had with Landmark. Big companies come along and make use of funding methods that have been a fantastic boon to indie developers. Big companies that arguably shouldn't need such funding streams or development models. They then screw over people by reneging on promises and put off people from using these crowd funding or early access models in future which will only hurt the indie companies in the end.

Shame on you Frontier. You're not just damaging your own reputation your damaging the reputation and future of the crowd funding model.

I'm just going to quietly agree with your excellent statement. Thank you. :)

Just give me my money back and I'll leave quietly.

This is a valid point. In fact when they made the announcement of breaking his promise about the offline mode, they should already have passed the option for those who believed in the FD to request the refund.

When I see this mess, it reminds me how I hate all the "will" and "is" used in the Star Citizen thread. All seem so heavily set in stone for some people I get shivers thinking of what could not go as [strike]intended[/strike] promised in a $60M+ crowdfunded project.

Writing all texts in conditional should be the #1 rule of any crowdfunding campaign.

Don't forget that if we stick to his analogy the car doesn't exist yet... its purely a blue print and in your case your home is still a plot of flat land that still required building permission :)

Yes, but a lot of people already paid for the final product...

I wouldnt say its impossible .... Its perfectly possible to create something bug free, as long as there isnt much to it.

The issue is that modern games are incredibly complex, not necessarily the code, but gameplay mechanics, especially in open world / sandbox games are very difficult to debug. Simply because a player has so many choices its impossible to test every outcome in reality. Thats before you even start talking about graphics API's (whether it be DX or OpenGL), graphics drivers which will also have their fair share of bugs. And on top of all that just the fact that everyone has slightly different hardware.

Anyone expecting ED to release bug free is living in a dreamworld.
