No Single Player offline Mode then?

Oh boy. So not only do they pull offline mode, but they're actively denying refunds for those who request them based on the loss of offline mode?

That's going to go down well. Wait until the games media hear about -that-, they'll rip FDEV to pieces. Seriously, that's crossing the rubicon. Even Ubisoft and EA aren't that boneheaded.

If you are really adamant that you are due a refund, use moneyclaimonline on the government website. I have used it successfully in the past. It will cost you around £25 which will not be refunded if you lose, however Frontier will have to pay that and fully refund the cost of the game if they lose.

Be aware that they may use your current online playtime stats to back up their case, so if you've already put 100 hours online into the game, you're gonna have to make a strong case for why you can't any longer. It's up to you if you think it's worth it or not but if you go ahead make sure you give full links to everywhere that Frontier mentioned offline play would be available.

Not being a great server buff myself, could someone please explain how this works.

Thanks :)

Take a copy of the program(s) and a datadump of the current state, can't go into specifics on how this could be done since they haven't released any details on the server infra.

Actually, I'm the first in this thread to note that refunds would be impossible to obtain; the idea that a refund could be obtained for the pre-order if you Beat-backed is merely a technicality that glinsters to the layman as a loophole. The whole line about being able to be refunded is if you went for the pre-order proper, that one is still not made available to you. The Beta is, and the full game is a reward.

... and their refusal to refund what I paid for the Lifetime Expansion Pack, bought from their shop?.... I don't expect my Kickstarter pledge to be refunded, and I never bought the Beta. So why refuse me?

I'm still scratching my head as to what the problem is.

we have not had a decent space game for years and because they wont let you play offline your moaning
its not even like you cant solo play and your forced to play with 1000's of others
people these days feel they need the moon on a stick

seriously if your not happy get a refund and shut the door on your way out .

I'm afraid I agree with the decision not to refund Kickstarter pledges. Whenever I back a KS project, I fully expect to get either A) Nothing, B) A steaming turd of a product, or C) just what I expected, in that order of likelihood.

Escrow service.. Anyone?

So, just hopping into the discussion. Quite disappointed for not getting an offline version. Won't cancel the purchase because Elite was the first game I ever played until the tape it was stored on broke down (it's that old!) . But.... Not happy at all.
As to the promise to save universe backups.. If thats possible Frontier better set up a contract with an escrow service company (AND proof this to us) because once a company fails, all bets are off. And I intended to play this game for a bit longer than when the current tape breaks  . Not sure if a company would like to support a server park for that long without any source of income.. (Although, Blizzard has been running their Starcraft servers for quite a while.. Yet, I'm better safe than sorry)
As for the offline mode not being as rich as the online.. I think I don't care. I like the universe to grow with me, at my pace. Not at the pace of one billion of players.. Maybe it's nice, I don't know but right now, I am kind of dissapointed..
I guess the best way to deal with this is to create a universe backup for download at release of the game. But I assume (yes, I know what that means ;) ) that's out of the question..

"We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down. That would also address the issue of how you preserve an online game for the future, from the whole 'retro' perspective."

Oh laugh out loud. What company in the history of companies has ever intended to lose money, go out of business or, metaphorically speaking, "take the servers down?"

Go ask Flagship Studios if they ever intended to take their servers down. Oh wait, you can't, because they folded within a year of Hellgate London's release. I'm sure people on this forum can find even more contemporary examples.

I have been reading what David Braben is saying. It is all spin.

I feel the pain of the other victims. We have been lied to, and used. I would have never backed an online only game. NEVER.

I unfortunately estimate that the game will fail in about 2 years, maybe faster. The problem is that all the people who wants to play online has already backed Star Citizen. They are invested in it. They will not play ED. In the mean time the upkeep of the servers are costing money. Money they will not have. I say this with sadness, for I was hoping to have a new gem to return year after year (I sometimes play the original Elite even to this day), but now I will never be able to play ED after just short 2 years. Pity. I was really hoping for a new Elite game.

Being a rube is all about the idea, the promise of what will be. All the stuff you get, right down to the full game, is a reward. You didn't buy anything. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. You funded Frontier Development. It's a whole different legal beast I'm the first to admit I know nothing about.

Like I noted earlier in this thread, I wish I had never rubed Wastelands 2. It sounded so good, yet the final product is a cure for insomnia.

It seems to me that the lifetime-pass could be refunded if the prior correspondence with FD was understanding and friendly enough from your end?

Except now you can't get a refund, FDEV are actively denying all refunds by the looks of it. So what's next?

Nice coordinated front FD displayed this afternoon. Braben's unannounced Q&A with comment on the most talked about issue at hand, customer supports mass refusal response on the refund issue, and extra moderators on hand to control the masses. Nicely done FD you really showed us who's Boss.

I'd try Watchdog I know its what people always say but this will impact a large number of people so maybe worth slinging them a tweet or email.

So a copy of the game 'where it ended' but still available to connect too ?

I understand that they would have to decide how that could be done, finance wise to maintain the server..
