No Single Player offline Mode then?

I wonder how people have come this far if their outlook is to disbelieve everything someone says. Surely they wouldn't even be playing the game?

Can't really blame them, how does the saying go? - 'Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me', or maybe you prefer 'once bitten, twice shy'

I could go on........

you have failed to read Brabens Q&A thread in recent days then. He has explained that periodic snapshots can/will be taken of server states so that, if such a time came, it could be ported wherever it needs to go.

... and if Frontier closes down? Or, more likely if Frontier is shut down. DAOC was Mark J's baby and boy did he love his company. Sold it though. Studio closed. Games shut down. It happens.

I'll say it again, nothing can take my time investment in X3TC away. If there is an need to log in, no matter how quickly, to any server then that game is not my own - I am beholden to a third party.

Actually, I believe he referenced that IF the scenario arose, he acknowledged that it could be taken on by a thrid party of some sort.

They have also said that this will be DRM-free game and that it will have offline mode. So I don't think what they say hold much weight right now.

Just like th e Q&A where he said without equivocation that there would be an offline mode? Hmm seems legit then...real legit.

Just out of curiosity how long do you guys think it will be until ED becomes pay to win. My guess is the 5 new new ships will be for sale for real money. Amy other guesse? Oh wait that can't happen I think braben has said that won't happen or maybe it was brookes...

What are you afraid of? Isn't it exciting to play a space sim fully online with other players? A Thing that I always missed within the X-Series. I really don't understand the hysteria. By playing BETA several times it seemed clear to me, that this game is only working online. I guess an hope that it's still a good experience even if you play it only occassionly. So Frontier, don't dissapoint me :)

SHAME ON YOU

Shame on you FD, and mostly DB for hurting your lifelong fans. You finely get an opportunity to make an Elite game that you want and not go though the GameTek rush you had with Frontier and FE. Instead, you are no different than GameTek.

This is just as bad as George Lucas changing Star Wars to make more money. Not knowing that he ruined almost every childhood memory of what made star wars great.

What you guys(FD and DB) should of done is released the game you promised, and you can always make an online only Elite later. Have you ever tried GameDev Studio-type games?? You work your way to a big company. You don't pretend you are a big company with money you did not earn, and then change all the rules on how you got there in the first place. If you do, the game is over. Earn some respect based on your delivered promises.

As for Elite 4, FD never developed it because FD is too small and FD never expected the demand would be there. After all the clones and indie elite-type games were successful, DB tried his luck at KSing Elite 4. DB starting talking about what we fans wanted to hear, and quite a few started throwing money at them. I'm am not a big fan of KS(possible fraud), so I waited to see how far the KS would go. Once I saw the DRM-Free Box set offering, I went the FD site (via paypal) instead of KS. During development FD had lived up to everything up until now. I really do not see how hard it is to offer an offline mode, you did it will the past elite games.

Now that ED is online only then why offer a physical CD/DVD ?? The best thing you can do is refund the backers that pledged based on the offline-mode. If they really want to play ED, they will gladly throw that money back. But I guarantee, not one person will purchase the box set for a physical CD/DVD.

Just do the right thing, and create another masterpiece. No not create something that dies off in a few years do to greed.

It says 'physical DRM free' in relation to the disk based installer. If you can play the game without the disk in the drive, that says to me it has no physical DRM 'features'.

And why should we believe that whomever have legal right over the game in the future will/could honor that empty promess ? Especially in light of the current situation ?

Hehe. There's no way I'd do this. I've been served with this during the beta ( deliberate crashing etc ) .. This isn't how I want the game at all but there are already people doing it. It not my thing but it is legitimate and very Elite. Pirates ? Mercinaries ? We have kill people missions. Me personally I like to trade and do missions and explore and all of this I can do in the previous games in a gameplay deeper way then ED is offering. I'm just bitterly disappointed.
Great graphics though whilst they last.
I just wanted to make a point.

Glad to hear it. I think you should play solo rather than miss out. Worrying about "when the servers get shut down" is like thinking about how everybody dies eventually so much that you can't enjoy life.

I would take the game as it is, and enjoy the ride as DB goes about pushing the boundaries of gaming once again.

Ifs.... buts....

I can imagine a lot of negaitve things, such as having an accident in my car on the way home tonight, but it won't stop me getting in my car.

Likewise, the possibilities you describe could happen, but I'm not going to not play the game on the basis they might. I reckon I've had my 50 quids worth already, but YMMV

Ideologues who can't stomach not freely copying the game, or the thought of playing in mild iron man (no save & load) can't unfortunately be helped here.

If .

Are you calling me a pirate?
When I see some of your reactions, I am more and more sure I do not want to share the same elite univers with you guys :(

Actually, I believe he referenced that IF the scenario arose, he acknowledged that it could be taken on by a thrid party of some sort.

...and I'll just reference WAR here again...WAR could have been taken over by a third party when the studio closed down but... errr... wasn't.

It is naïve to think that a game with an online requirement will exist without limits.

Ok, changing tack slightly, are you not bummed when devs nerf a character, class, unit type etc etc etc? With offline games you can choose to patch.

Hi,

this my first post. As a beta backer who wanted to play Elite Dangerous in offline solo mode I simply wanted to add my thoughts to the discussion.

1) The loss of offline mode to me isn't the loss of a feature it's a complete paradigm shift. The whole nature of the game has now changed. I appreciate there is a solo online game mode but it is not the same thing. I appreciate that for some no offline is no big deal it just happens that for me it is. I have no interest in a MMO game of any sort. If from the beginning they said no offline mode they wouldn't have got my money.

2) The whole no refund because you bought the beta and the game came as part of a free goodiebag seems very very weaselly. I interpret this from the store page 'On the game's full release you also get the Elite: Dangerous Mercenary Edition' as I'm buying a package that includes beta access, the full game and the rest. Surely if part of that package i.e. the full game, does not come as advertised, i.e. no offline mode as stated by developers then surely the sales of goods act applies as the product being supplied is not as described?

It is you who have failed to read the writing on the wall that so many here are trying to point out.

They have gone against their promise after almost 2 years of talking about it and discussing it everywhere. And then, when people start calling them on it and asking for refunds, they hide behind the letter of the law like cowards; betraying the very people that got them to where they are.

You think this is honorable? that their behavior is ethical and is in alignment with your character?

How can you possibly have any faith whatsoever in that promise? What happens to that promise if Frontier is bought out? Goes bankrupt? Changes their mind again?

No, it genseraly is not a good experience. If you look this thread a bit, you'll probably know why it is that.

Have they published the Eurogamer interview with the community backers / testers ?
I am talking about the journalist who asked about community participation here.

EA would of never allowed a 3rd party to own it.
