No Single Player offline Mode then?

Exactly, I remember directly asking about it and I did not pledge before they added those.
I bought the game shortly *after* the KS ended, and offline play was clearly a promised feature at that moment. Unfortunately, I also bought beta access at the same time, so .... [Censored]

I have high speed internet at home to go with that ultra-high-spec computer. But I'm not often home. I also have a high spec laptop that I take with me and which I wanted to use to play ED when I'm away for days at a time in places where I don't have a connection (sometimes not even a data connection on my cell phone)

The amazing thing about the information era that you and I are privileged to live in is the growing proliferation of internet access to all corners of the world. Even aircraft high in the skies over the Pacific have satellite internet connections now.

Even in developing nations, accessing the internet is NOT a challenge anymore. Cell phone towers and providers offering data services can be found all over the planet, and their coverage is increased yearly as developing nations expand their infrastructure.

When I was travelling in indochina, there were internet cafes in every city for those who did not have wireless data or for the privileged few who did not have home computer (which was many people).

Where were you going for business that didn't have internet access, the Tibetan plateau?

So there is no ISP with good enough connection that is capable of pulling market data occasionally from the servers, in literally every major city outside the US/Europe?

I challenge you to find me one city in the world that does not have internet access.
Do you have comprehension problems or what???????

There are stability problems because the national broadband infrastructure isn't as deep and well funded - do I need to spell it out a word at or time or do you get it now???????

Or don't you want to????

I think it would do well for people to remember why this was done through kickstarter and not through a developer in the first place.

It's because DB isn't compelled by the backer to release something that is not to his liking. If the developer wants to surrender control to his backers, what's the point of kickstarter?

I think this, especially the bolded, is the best thing I've read in this whole discussion.

It's absolutely spot on....

Not only that, but (nearly) everything that has been raised as a reasonable issue was addressed in that last newsletter.

I still feel some sympathy for the people who really had their hearts set on offline... but now I feel bad that they're going to miss out on this incredible journey we're about to take.

Hope you can find it to come along!

See youze in the Milky Way.... somewhere.... (or not if you're playing solo.)

If your local ISP regularly goes down then I will concede to you. But even the lowest bandwidth connections will be able to play singleplayer elite.

edit: one of my buddies in Florida has a crappy ISP that crashes sometimes; Jake is that you?! (lol US)

If it's so pointless what are you doing here?

Or are we to believe you're presence is a result of your benevolence? Here to enlighten us all.

No, he's here [joke warning] to push the post count up to 10,000. [end of joking]

I don't know about you, but I thought the point of a forum was to engage. He engaged with his two pence, and it appears that you are upset by that. So why are you Grumpy (Yes I looked at your avatar!)

Northern Maine. Not much there but trees and the occasional moose,

It wasn't a core feature, just something extra added later on. Offline mode was announced just 3 weeks before KS goal was reached (11th of december). I wonder when most of the unhappy people here backed up ED on KS and how big difference it made.

Correct!!!

I believed in the FS and ED development and supported them with a small donation first day when it opened. I personally don't enjoy multi-player online games and realistically do not have that type of time to spend playing constantly morphing online game. The collage days are long over sadly. :( That being said I still supported them even that I had no intention of playing. This is called consumer loyalty.

Once the offline mode and DRM-free was announced I donated again. Thinking that I can play it here and there without the need to compete with highschool kids and collage students. Many of us did! In those last 3 weeks is when most of the ED pledges happened and they jumped to 1.5 mil. I don't think they would have made it to 1.5 mil if those extras were not added. So yea... I am not very happy with the way they Frontier changed their policy, hoping that there will not be any backlash, and snuck it in a newsletter.

I still have good 30 years ahead of me (i hope) and let me tell you that consumer loyalty they made in late 1980s works both way. If this is not FIXED they will not see a dollar from me and I will go out my way to speak to my peers about the crap I witnessed here.

Just thinking... we all know it's a done deal but I am seeing posts that are a mini-novella in size defending their distaste that it was don't a writing why it wasn't what they wanted...

It's like the manifesto of the damned in here - It would be funny if not for the psycho-evolution some social humanist will get a doctorate over....
It's amazing.

Sorry, you've lost me. What scam would this be?

An imaginary one. The other guy was suggesting that physical DRM free edition means it is an edition with no physical DRM. But that would be "physically DRM free". And if they had really named it that, the scam would have been obvious and immediately detected.

To benevolently enlighten us then. Nice of him.

And questions indicate curiosity, not chagrin.

Oh you have that information in detail then please let us all know exactly how much connection time will be needed to keep singleplayer elite current? Just a nice clear quote from the designers would be nice. I believe you are simply regurgitating unsubstantiated fluff from DB without any true understanding of the situation - none of us have. From what has been released so far even single player is going to require a PERMANENT connection whilst playing - in other words, no logging on and going into offline mode as steam allows - so despite all the fluff and bluster it IS an online only game and those with less than perfect infrastructure support are going to have a degraded gaming experience.

Whatever side you take on this issue, it would indeed make for an interesting thesis for a paper wouldn't it?

Well, that too, but here for the comedy level. Also my main PhD is Philosophy, and this is almost at the religious stage :)

I don't know if you spotted that they snuck in to the latest newsletter the promise to review this decision. With enough friendly persuasion they could be convinced to go the extra mile.
