Nobody for ironman?

Am I the only one intrigued by ironman mode?

I get why people wouldn't want to risk it. And it's not like I have decided that this is definitely the mode for me. But the thing is, in ironman mode you will only encounter other ironman players.

It seems to me that someone playing in ironman mode will be a lot more careful with what they do, and think harder about taking a risk like attacking another player.

On that basis, it would seem to me that for those worrying about griefers, ironman might be the way to go. A griefer in ironman mode is unlikely to survive long enough to get anything beyond the most basic ships. Whereas you, the serious player, will soon be well kitted out and eminently able to defend yourself.

The risk, of course, is permadeath. That is after all the point. But as I understand it, blowing up doesn't necessarily mean you die. You just have to manually eject in time. I think I can do that. And I think ironman might be worth the risk if I am correct in thinking it will attract more serious and cautious players.

What do you think?

interested... certainly, and that is how I will start in the game, however, whether I will stay in after I die (ie restart from scratch) I am not so sure.

It is funny I wonder how many of the people claiming about ganking and griefing being a fun mechanic of the game, and saying dont be a care bear, we dont need any anti griefing measures just suck it up and move on, its only a game, will be playing in ironman, a mode where 100hrs + can be wiped out in an instant.

I personally think in iron man it is v important that all human plays stick within the boundaries of their roles, ie a pirate plays as a pirate, actually looking to make money, NOT to be a psychopath.

My experiences of how this pans out will determine how much of a go I give ironman (online).

you say griefing wont work in ironman... we will see!.. The problem is I plan to play mostly solo, that for me IS elite, 1 man and his ship, not flying in a fleet, aside for the odd mission.

I am fairly sure a group of half a dozen sidewinders even basically kitted will be a match for most solo ships.

and that is forgetting the kickstarter perks of potentially a fully kitted out cobra from the get go.

Nope!

Many have signalled their intentions to play ironman. It's mostly spread out in other discussions though.

I'll be an ironman player from day one... well, maybe day two. I'm going to have a look at the founder's system first, then fly into the sun.

The only Human players you will meet will also be in Ironman mode, so they have as much to lose as anyone else.

Yes, iron man mode is what I assumed the game would be by default (who can forget the spinning you have died in FE2), so crashing/dying means something. But can see why it isn't.

I may be getting mixed up with another game. But has it been mentioned that if you die in iron man mode - you can respawn, but in none-iron man mode. So you don't lose everything, you just move over to the "normal" play group.

From what I've seen in the threads we will have three commanders (I could be entirely wrong here). I was planning on using one for single player, not sure whether it'll be on or offline yet, which is what I've been waiting for since Elite. One for the chaos which I think MP may be; and the last for Ironman which, as you say could be populated by more cautious players, I also feel this is more realistic, a lot more frustrating, but realistic and therefore more immersive.

If, however, we only get one commander, I'll be going solo, Han or otherwise.

You make a rather convincing argument for Ironman. I haven't really considered it before, but being more careful is natural when the stakes is high.

why will they?

***hypothetically***what would stop me and 5 mates from setting up a throwaway ironman slot, and us cruise around causing hell with our start ships - be it sidewinder or pirate upgraded cobra. when I die, I just restart and join the pack with my new guy.

the only people who have anything to lose are the ones invested in ironman.

I hope the OP does not think this is going off topic.... if so sorry just say and i will drop out, but imo this is what needs to be gotten right if we want people to play ironman

That's the reason for the "Ignore Player" system.

Yep, there is a safety-net for iron men.

I shall be playing Ironman, with a ship kitted out for maximum running away ability.

As that is the only way I can envisage remaining Iron for any length of time.

There's no doubt the Ironman mode will be the least populated but I still think there are a lot of folk who are at least going to give it a shot. I haven't really thought about it that much, it's not a mode I've played in other games but I might give it a shot early on.

I would add that game stability will really influence my choice.

If the game is bugged and sometimes you explode without any reason, then I think Ironman mode is pointless.

I'm so happy there are others out there who have thought seriously about ironman. :)

Sure, but you and your friends will be in Sidewinders and I will be in a fully kitted out Imperial Courier. So maybe I'll kill you again. And again. And if you're a griefer (not saying YOU are), I would think you'd eventually get sick of that and log into the non-ironman "all mode" to pick on some easier targets.

I would assume the griefer mentality is generally pretty casual. They want to cause grief, pwn some noobs, go shooty-bang for a few hours in their underwear. I may be wrong but I don't think these morons are usually interested in a challenge.

At least I hope I'm wrong.
