Some people want external views etc leading to a more 3rd Person perspective. FD seem to want all in cockpit with possible options for cameras drones etc. Its me should have explained better and used "3rd" not "3"

Ahh, I understand now :)

It will be interesting to see how they implement this 3rd person view, I hope its an option and not enforced, could ruin the immersion for people in VR !

I didn't murder him. My ventriloquist doll's alive!

Some people will say anything to get others to cancel their order, moving them up the list.

Is there anyone out there slightly concerned about how Facebook like to experiment on their customers? I mean we're going to be immersed in as realistic an environment as possible. Just imagine the sort of psychological experiments they can run on us.

Go on! Be on the safe side. Cancel your order so the rest of us can get bumped up one place.

Have you tried looking at your ship when outfitting it in a station, while using the Oculus? :)

Its already a 3rd person view! It looks amazing!

After using one last night at a LAN i'm attending, I will definitely be purchasing the consumer version when it's released!

the immersion, even with DK1 set is amazing!

I

What I'm driving at is for standard end users and consumers only, not devs- to cough up $300 for version .8 seems a bit daft when you 'll only have to buy it again when 1.0 is out, that's buying twice!

I get what you're saying, however there's a few reasons why that's invalid IMO.

1) Life is too short. What is the use of waiting 12-18 months for something that may be better, when what is there now is good enough for what I want it primarily for (i.e. playing games like E: D in VR 1080p). For all I know, I could be dead in 18 months. E: D looks pretty damn good in 1080p in 2D-o-vision, so I'm expecting it to be awesome in VR at that resolution.

2) If CV1 turns out to be significantly better (and I'm thinking 4K <1ms at a minimum), and a reasonable price, then I may buy it. DK2 is not going to suddenly become worthless, either as a piece of kit in its own right (mates can use it) or in re-sale value on eBay.

3) Facebook. I'm still slightly nervous about Facebook's involvement. I'm 99% sure this will be OK, but there's still that 1% niggling doubt at the back of my mind, which will be there until CV1 is officially released / announced. I like Facebook, I use it all the time, but I'm not sure I'm ready to have it strapped to my head.

I hope dev buyers get a discount off v1.0?

Wouldn't hold your breath on that one to be honest. DK1 buyers didn't get a discount on DK2. However, if you sell your old kit on eBay that's your discount right there. ;)

Of course all can wait until version 1.1 when all the main bugs have been shaken out and it's much cheaper, lighter and the issue of not being able to see ones own hands has been solved.

For the hands thing, you'll need additional hardware... like some VR glove thing. No way around that.

ETA: Unless you mean some kind of semi-transparent overlay, rather like AR? In which case, yes.

This is my logic through and through.
The other thing to take into account is that this is computer hardware...there is always going to be something better just around the corner...always.

As soon as the consumer version is released then a month later they will announce that they're working on a 4D Holodeck version. We're just caught in the middle of a big circular computer hardware arms rat race.

My machinw will struggle with the DK2 so the CV would probably look like a flickerbook.

I'll be happy with the DK2 as mentioned it sounds as if it will do Elite justice.

Exactly. It's the same with phones, tablets, and just about any technical hardware. You can wait yourself to death because there's always going to be something better on the horizon. Sooner or later, if the concept interests you, you just have to take the plunge.

DK2 is not the finished article. I'm pretty sure CV1 won't be either. This industry is only just starting. :)

I tried an Oculus Rift!

Not on Elite unfortunately.
I was at Manchester Comicon at the weekend and Coolermaster had a small stand where you could try stuff.
A small queue (3 people) had formed and I quickly realised the had a rift, the first one.
It was just a rolling demo sort of thing of a rollercoaster.
Queued up excited, sat down..
Had my turn

It was truly incredible the feeling of immersion.
However I'm more than a little prone to travel sickness and by the crin it came on quick.
Anyone thinking of getting one, make sure you try one first if you can. I'd hate to have spent that much on something that made me feel queasy for half an hour.

I had a go on Kerrash's at Lavecon to check out if I'd be hit with the queasies. Fortunately it seemed ok!

Perhaps a rollercoaster wasn't the best sample to try - being passively forced into rapid maneuvers, I get sick in the back seat of a car, or if I try to read but I'm fine when I'm driving and know what the car is going to do next.

DK2 should reduce the simulator sickness via higher refresh rates, low persistence, positional tracking and reduced latency.
CV will improve on this further with at least a higher refresh rate over the DK2 (DK2 is 75hz, CV1 will probably be 90hz+).

Unfortunately, this stuff is way out of my reach...for now. Maybe when it gets down to 50 bucks lol if ever.

Hi Capt Carl,

Good to hear your experience with the rift!

I have found that rollercoaster demos are a bad idea for first time users in the DK1.

I've tried it on a few friends and relatives and most of them had similar experiences, they loved it, but some felt ill afterwards.

I think anyone experiencing the rift for the first time need to just get accustomed to the 3d environment (tuscany is really good or sci-fi demo - technolust works pretty well).. later once they have kind of gotten the bearings on VR, most people will feel better on the rollercoaster.

I remember when my DK1 arrived and i tried tuscany for the first time, i felt very strange afterwards when i came out, a bit dizzy perhaps. But nothing too bad

After maybe a week, i did not experience any problems whatsoever with any VR sickness and remember playing skyrim for a few houes, and dishonoured on a 6 hour play through in the rift (amazing btw).

I play war thunder regularly and have 0 problems doing some crazy turns, dogfighting etc.

I honestly think the key to it is ease people in slowly. I think the roller coaster is a bad idea for 1st time users and I am sure it would have made me feel pretty rough too if it was my first VR experience,

It really can depend on the type of game and environment you play in. I still have trouble with games where I walk around in first person. But when I am flying a ship or air plane things are fine.

It's important to have a frame of reference for your environment. In Elite you have the cockpit surrounding you, and you are sitting down. This eliminates a lot of the motion sickness. Euro Truck Simulator 2 is similar because you are sitting in a truck cab.

Walking around in first person can cause problems because your brain tells you, that you are standing up and running, but your body tells you it is sitting.

The roller coaster demo is a bit of a problem due to all the sharp moves.

The best games and demos for first time users are the ones where they players body position matches up within the game world and in reality.
