I
What I'm driving at is for standard end users and consumers only, not devs- to cough up $300 for version .8 seems a bit daft when you 'll only have to buy it again when 1.0 is out, that's buying twice!
I get what you're saying, however there's a few reasons why that's invalid IMO.
1) Life is too short. What is the use of waiting 12-18 months for something that
may be better, when what is there now is good enough for what I want it primarily for (i.e. playing games like E: D in VR 1080p). For all I know, I could be dead in 18 months. E: D looks pretty damn good in 1080p in 2D-o-vision, so I'm expecting it to be awesome in VR at that resolution.
2) If CV1 turns out to be significantly better (and I'm thinking 4K <1ms at a minimum), and a reasonable price, then I may buy it. DK2 is not going to suddenly become worthless, either as a piece of kit in its own right (mates can use it) or in re-sale value on eBay.
3) Facebook. I'm still slightly nervous about Facebook's involvement. I'm 99% sure this will be OK, but there's still that 1% niggling doubt at the back of my mind, which will be there until CV1 is officially released / announced. I like Facebook, I use it all the time, but I'm not sure I'm ready to have it strapped to my head.
I hope dev buyers get a discount off v1.0?
Wouldn't hold your breath on that one to be honest. DK1 buyers didn't get a discount on DK2. However, if you sell your old kit on eBay that's your discount right there.
Of course all can wait until version 1.1 when all the main bugs have been shaken out and it's much cheaper, lighter and the issue of not being able to see ones own hands has been solved.
For the hands thing, you'll need additional hardware... like some VR glove thing. No way around that.
ETA: Unless you mean some kind of semi-transparent overlay, rather like AR? In which case, yes.
