Not sure Frontier were wise.

Steam has a very large user base, it is good that the game is there, brings more visibility and resources.

Also, while there are surely lots of idiots there, there are also lots of fine fellas that enjoy complex games, and that won't be bothered by negative reviews made by 12 year old kids that can't even write intelligibly.

More than that, Steam does not hold a monopoly on idiocy - there's a number of very ancient forum members that behave just the same or worse, both in bashing and white knighting.

I salute our new Steam CMDRs, and sincerely wish they enjoy the game and be a part of the mostly nice community for many years to come.

Exactly. I don't see a problem with games being on STEAM. What I do see a problem with are elitist fools who think they're somehow more entitled because they backed or followed the progress of the game (or both) and see themselves as above everybody else who came in later. I bought this game, paid full price for it and if people are unhappy with that then that's their problem (it's also irrelevant).

If your game isn't on STEAM these days you're basically giving it a death sentence as it simply won't reach the majority of the PC gaming community. Personally I prefer my games without STEAM - I don't particularly WANT to have to use third party software running in the background, but it's pointless resisting it. It is what it is.

P.S I bought the game on STEAM (never even heard of it until it popped up in my recommended games list) and learned to play it without reading the manual. It wasn't too hard. I did the same with EVE Online many years ago - no manuals, very little reading, just figure it out myself.

I agree with you somewhat, the steam release was a little hasty, but good games shouldn't require you to read a before playing.

I only found this game thanks to Steam, and I've been following Kickstarter projects for a long, long time... I admit that I was kind of overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge starting out but hey, that's what the internet is for.

I don't know everything yet, but I certainly can't hold my ineptitude for learning against a game.

Not all of us are bad!

ED Backers should have been given a STEAM KEY prior to release to offset the " I can't, I don't understand" crowd

I'll never understand why backers, who already have the game, would ever need a Steam Key. I'll also never understand why the "Steam Key" crowd would ever think that backers would ever help them out. A truly confusing situation.

The Steam forum is kind of cute. Like that loveable but slightly 'special' cousin who you can get to do amusing things with just the right encouragement.

That is simply cruel. And amusing.

Visit steam ED forum and let the rage flow through you. If it does not, you will ascend and become a saint.

When we become Saints, do we get one of these?

I think when you think about it, you'll realize that you're paying far more attention to this stuff than most potential buyers.

And honestly, if that's how some people inform themselves before making a purchase, and are completely credulous of what they read, do you really want to play Elite with them? I don't. I'd prefer it if they were just filtered out ahead of time.

E:D doesn't require reading. Within an hour of playing I was already well on my way to being confident with a lot of the mechanics. First thing I did was the pre-flight checklist tutorial where I pressed each button and was told what it did. Then I took off, carefully flew out of the station then back in and landed. Then I flew out of the station, went in to supercruise and jumped to the next star. Then back to the station, where I docked again.

Then I did a few missions, just basic ones to carry scrap metal from one station to another. When I got scanned while docking and the police ships flying around the station fired at me I turned around, hit boost, engaged supercruise and escaped to dock somewhere else, where I made a thread on the forum to figure out how to pay my fine (I didn't realize there were two "contacts" windows).

This all in the first couple of hours. This game doesn't really require reading, just a couple of hours of your time and a desire to play it.

Why on earth do you people care in which ways this game is being sold?
Are you shareholders?

I read threads about neative reviews, how to counter them and even advertise the game.
Are you serious?
It is an open market, good stuff sells, bad stuff doesn't.
If there is a negative review then maybe it is earned?
If people find it hard to get into the game, maybe the tutorials need an overhaul?
Just because you like to read a manual doesn't mean everyone else likes it as well.

I LOVE this game, I enjoyed the learning curve and I understand everyone who has a hard time getting into it.
Thinking back how many hours of reading and trying things I did, is just crazy.

If you are freightened this game will die, then buy as much keys as you can afford.

This is just so beyond my understanding...it leaves me speechless.

dont worry there is a ton of elitist on this forum ,

just because it on steam , wow, steam is the number 1 gaming provider deal with it,

the reviews moan like all the people who didnt pay it on steam is the lack of content and they are correct, once you spend 60+ hours your bored it a grind for what nothing, it a shell of a game that needs stuff am hoping one day it does , but till then i wait, i browse forums in hope of finding that gem, but stop moaning and moaning and moaning

I swear this happens to every game that gets a Steam release later. A large influx of new players followed by the community going downhill. Best to stay away from the forums for a week or two to let the dust settle.

Here Are The Actual Steam Reviews

What they reveal is that this thread is actually a showcase of straw-manning, hasty generalization and psychological projection, rather than a rational assessment of the Steam community, or anything else, for that matter.

No need to blame an outgroup for negativity.

There's plenty of it right here.

Someone has been munching through a psychology book ;)

But, seriously - there are plenty of positive, well constructed reviews on Steam if people would like to find out for themselves rather than relying on someone else for their information.

These aren't cherry picked has most 'helpful'* - just the most recent:

Yeah as a person who wanted this, bringing it on steam forced my hand. I went in fully thinking its be like dark souls but in space and I'm kinda right. Sadly the masses on steam don't have a brain between them. Many believe the game is an early access game.

It's not FD's fault that most steam users seem to be special snowflakes.

ED is technically an early access game though.

You do know that it is selling very well on steam right?
I can live with a stupid unmoderated steamforum as long FD get enough money to support this game for a long time.
ED has a great future and steam is one reason for that.
