Notice to Devs. Do or die. Exploration.

Boi? kinda flattering. I really couldn't give a toss what you say. All of you. The point being is that I have been behind Braben for many years. I hated what happened with Bell. But that's my thing. For the love of god dave would you please turn this into an exploration game? A proper one? You are sitting on sooooooo much money. You still. To this day they don't understand something. I know exactly where the Pleiades nebula is in my head. I know exactly where those pesky asteroids are in relation to them. To the second. I know every cluster out to the Formidine and back... I named them.

I never got into exploration in this game because I always felt like the planets are looking like they are washed out or made out of plastic. They don't look very realistic and they are incredibly repetitive which really doesn't add up to my immersion.

I can understand the frustration and why so many people complain about exploration.

Three things to start with. If you don't do these... that's it.

1: The debeigeifacation.
2: Add reflectivity from orbit.
3: Add transparency to ice worlds and shine to metallic worlds. Along with the lighting effects.

At the moment this is a cartoon game. When I look at a pizza, it has more 3d ness than a typical world. Everything is totally matted. Get rid of that first. Because you know what? EVERY world that is in horizons looks like a cartoon. We pay extra to land in blended soup. Try and fix it. Please.

Is there at least an option to keep light level...zzzz. Nope. Not in the menu, and not in the beta.

That's my first and as I consider it... Absolute prerequisite after the scripted thargoids come along.

Multiple light sources and reflectivity from orbit and below. EASY. Don't even try to fiddle with exploration before you have done that. Ill pass the flame to the others now. Those guys who genuinely love the game... and want to see the smallest of touches. - lads - hit them hard. Keep it simple as can be.
No, no, no. This is all wrong.

Dear Frontier. Address the nice people and call them dear. You're 2 words in and they already like you. "What a nice chap", they're thinking, "I wonder what he's got to say". Now pay attention, because this next one is very important. Almost mandatory.

I love Elite Dangerous, I have played <insert correct number> of hours, but ... Now you've catered to the nice people by telling them you love their creation. At the office they're reading this, nodding and winking to each other going": "Eh?". Upon reading the "but" however they get worried. "Oh dear, I wonder what's bothering this nice young man. Maybe we could help him out". You're just piling up the good will by now.

<rest of the post>

I hope this has been helpful to you. Happy posting! :)

True, it is my opinion, based on hundreds of hours of post 2.2 exploration versus 1000+ hours of pre 2.2 exploration. Where I used to absolutely love flying low over planets sightseeing and landing on them to explore them up close, now they all look so very similar, drab, and boring that I've completely lost the will to even bother anymore. I'm not tired of the game, the difference is the planet changes made in 2.2.

But yes, that is my opinion, based on the evidence at hand. Thankfully Frontier agrees with me and admits to 2.2 having mistakes, and desires planet terrain improvements as well.

Huh? FD doesnt agree with your 'there is no fun anymore, it used to be better' sentiments. They just said they will work on the beige, as everyone wants. I am also Elite at exploration, want the beige gone, but dont feel color trumps texture...

I gotta be honest your "Vision" looks like the monitor cable isnt quite plugged in properly :).

Have you kickstarted your life yet? I was one of the original kickstarters to this game boy. Have you done... anything?

I am a backer as well and a long time fan of the Series, I first played elite on my Apple IIc in 1984. I believe what they are trying to tell you is you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Your approach is a bit harsh and will draw this kind of reaction from many other players. Some will be receptive to your message but most will ...LOL

This has been tried before man and never works...change your approach :)

My own hope is that Frontier still is (or at least planning) to work on both shaders and lighting for Elite. Some personal pet hopes for the future:

Lighting 1: Stars casting their color, tinting everything we see illuminated by them. Not only the star color tinting the natural color of the planet surfaces, but also the objects such as our ships and cockpit interiors. Under a blue star, we'd see a world with a blue color cast everywhere, full time where that star shone. Likewise, red or deep purple stars, intense and saturated, like photography through a color filter.

Lighting 2:
The dark side. The dark side of a planet should accurately be lit depending upon the brightness of other bodies overhead. The dark side of a moon could be quite bright, if the parent planet (or another moon) were overhead and in full illumination. But if not... then the ambient light from the galactic plane should be pretty dang dark.

Lighting 3: Shadow sources. Right now, the shadow source moves very obviously between stars in a system. I'd hope that this transition can be made much more subtle.

Planet shaders 1: Most critical to me is the impression of surface material variety, for some planets. Instead of many planets having a very uniform coloring over the entirety of the surface, give them mottled patches of 2 or 3 surface materials. Even our own gray moon has 2 or 3 different and contrasting surface types which we see clearly from earth. I'd love to see planets which scatter between a sandy soil of one material, interspersed with more rocky and/or icy regions.

And yes this used to be 100% possible. I have screenshots of me back in early 2.x driving from a wintry white icy region (with my SRV kicking up snow) on a planet, across into a dry rocky area (with my SRV kicking up dusty sands).

Planet shaders 2: Reflectance. Same as being on earth and seeing a snowy/icy field shining wet in the glare of the sun. Some surface types seem well suited to this, including icy, metallic, and some rocky varieties. (Note that I'm talking about seeing these effects from SRV level, or 2km to 3km up in the ship. Whether or not it would show from orbital level is another matter). Other prime locations for this would be surrounding geysers, where the liquified materials may have settled, before boiling off to a dry state in the vacuum, leaving a reflective effect in the region.

Planet shaders 3: Color variations which are based upon the materials listed as most composing the planet. Including some very black surfaced planets, which reflect very little color. Icy planets with tints of color in some regions of ice, as though materials have "stained" some stretches of those icy plains.

And finally... Of course, these color and surface variations would visually be changed further by the color cast by the star. So the mix of each star and planet types would create even further interesting situations. Thus:

Planets which under "white" light would be icy blue... Under a strongly red star, they appear as dark purple to black ice!
Planets which under "white" light would be metallic red... Under a stronly red star, they appear as white!
Planets which under "white" light would be rocky orange... Under a strongly purple star, they appear as purple!

The tone isn't flying well with people, and I totally agree with that. You could say exactly the same thing, but your tone and delivery will garner vastly different reactions... but that's by the by and not really what I wanted to address.

Exploration. One of the big parts of the game. Arguably the biggest, consider that over 99% for the galaxy is yet to be explored, so I would say this was pretty stonkin' huge. Sandro has said on a previous livestream (a week or two ago) that more will be revealed about the 'improvements' plan at Frontier Expo, which is actually only a couple of weeks away. He's hinted at various things and made mention to exploration as one of the various aspects that the team is thinking about and... yes, it's being thought about seriously, just like with all of the other parts of the game that the team want to improve. Understand, though, that these thoughts and discussions internally may or may not happen so I really want to stress that part. No promises or guarantees, as many of you forumers will know by now, is an oft-used phrase of mine.

FX17 will be the place to watch for more news on the grander scale of improvements and what we'll be doing. There's a lot that the team are intending to do.

So, yes, we're aware of the issues that the exploration community currently has, or at least the more pertinent points of contention. I've been talking to a number of these folks and taking a whole bunch feedback from threads in said forum section for the design team to consider.

I like the planets as they are now because it means paupers like myself can actually play.

But we don't matter, am I right?

Wait a second. Are you suggesting that planets should be watered down in appearance because all you can afford is a potato for a computer?

The thing is, that it can get pitch dark at the rim, facing out towards the void.
Even in the bubble, it can get pretty dark when facing away from the core. Since I like to back up my claims with an image, see below. :)

This was taken at the rim. I leave this one without a spoiler... Edit: this wasn't taken during an eclipse!

Well that looks fantastic, exactly what I imagine for a "moonless night" darkness.

The only time I can recall having seen darkness like that in 2.3, was on a moon that was in the shadow of it's parent planet. I'll deliberately set up a landing facing away from the core and check it out.

Yes, I added that note, that it wasn't in a shadow. Granted, this place is about 50ly away from Beagle Point. :)

Cartoonish? I automatically imagined No Man's Sky. You don't happen to mean that game by any chance? That's what I would call cartoonish, and that's why I cant get at good terms with NMS.

Sigh, I wasn't stating that Frontier agrees with my opinions on "what is fun", just that they agree with me that the beige needs fixing. I thought that was apparent, but for the super literal I will change my post thusly:

Just for you Sleut!!!

Apple IIc trying to recollect that one...did it look quite cool and way a ton due to the good knows what metal they had inside? When you first got one didnt you have to drop it onto a flat surface to ensure the pins on the chips were sitting flush in the chip sockets?

Those were the days.
