News NPC AI update

... but I think I'm going to stay grounded for the time being.

Since I took the time to whine about the 2.1 changes I felt it only fair to come back and renounce my whining.

I really enjoy this game so, after a couple days off, I found myself back in front of the joystick determined to figure out how to play all over again. It has been a couple of weeks now and I am thoroughly enjoying myself again. Once I understood that I could no longer do multiple diverse tasks with a single ship and that I now had to run instead of fight things got much better. I also noticed that I wasn't using the proper sized shields for my ship; had 5A when I could have had 6A. D'oh! [big grin]

I still think there is far too much interdiction and I feel the pain of all the casual players out there who just want to relax and cruise though space. Hopefully there's more balancing to come but in the meantime I'm going to keep trying to 'git gud' or at least 'git gud enuf'.

Really FD, when will this be solved? I just switched to a diamondback scout to relearn my piloting skills. I flew around, did missions and stuff and all was easy and I only had to flee once from an interdiction and once from a two-ship attack. No problem.

So, I thought "let's go back into my ASP" and was shot on my first flight (with six guns, 5A shields with 2 boosters), no missions, no powerplay, no reason whatsoever. Two interdictions of 414ls from the station, first I could escape, second sumbission failed, whirlwinded me and shot me within 20 seconds. No fair fight, no chance at all.

How it this fun? What is the difference between me flying the DBS and the ASP? Is the ASP jinxed or what? This will really be my last attempt to get something done about this. I am really fed up! I treid everything from sending tickets, posting threads, but nothing seems to help. What can I do to get help?

Today support told me that (at least on XBOX) there is still a bug with the NPCs having engineered weapons they're not supposed to have. I had one attack my anaconda and it did orders of magnitude more DPS than anything I've ever seen in this game, including being focus-fired on by 5 big ships in a high intensity combat zone. It was crazy powerful.

So yeah, there are definitely still some major bugs here. They're going to be fixing them soon is what they said.

Must be the logic behind where it is randomized if you are attacked or not.
Flying a smaller ship is reducing the chance to be chased flying bigger ones is increasing it. So far fair deal.
I am currently flying a Viper IV and are chased rarely regardless of load or mission as long as not stacking them.
But getting into my clipper taking 75t of nearly any valuable good will ensure I get a least a Deadly opponent in the next
system I jump to.

Seems this calculation is broken somewhere.

Interesting theory concerning ship size. I downgraded to a Keelback, with turrets, and started to do single missions, making sure that the rank for the mission was not a combat one. So far, so quiet. Only one attacker has got close since - mostly harmless - he almost got my shields down, but I nabbed him with the help of SA.

Keep in mind: Most likely ship size is one of many factors in that calculation, but testing the viper for a week nowand it keeps low numbers in attacks. Where I had much much more trouble in my Phyton or Clipper.
On the other hand FD will never ever give an open look in how they estimate those things. So we are left to speculation.

Still struggeling with the new AI. For a casual play style pilot like me its to difficult. I learned to avoid interdictions a little bit and moved to the rim of populated area. To me it seems the casual players are denied content in populated space and need to move out of it. No problems with that you would think, considering the amount of stars left in Elite galaxy. The downside is, its a big contentless space. You can explore systems and scan and... let me think.. and... eh nothing more :(
There comes a moment you want to cash in your scans and need to go back to the populated zone. Because of being out of populated space for a long time you get rusty concerning the npc's and fear to loose your scan data before being able to cash in.
Maybe the, for me, extreme NPC AI would hurt less if pilots wouldnt loose their scan data when killed by an NPC or a combat pilot wouldnt loose the bounty stash by ship loss.

It seems strange to me a ship lost has no impact on engineering material loss (you keep the materials gathered) but loose everything else. How is this possible?
One being (scan)data that could easyly be stored on a personal storage device when you eject at ship destruction and has more chance at not being destoyed tmho,
the other being materials, in other words not a sequence of 0's and 1's, like scan data and bounty claims would be.

I think a change here would be more forgiving for the casual player. I understand they want to give the real combat players fun, no problems there. But are the real combat players the only ones who deserve fun in this game? No!
Unless they remove all other possibilities to play Elite casual players are as entitled to play this game as combat only players are. Do they need to adjust the AI? No, they need to remove the bugs in it. Big NPC ships should not be able to outmanouvre smaller agile ships, but yes they should be able to tank the small ships fire power. And NPC ships need to have same restrains players have concerning amount of ammo/shaft/energy and such. And it is no fun your powerplant is disabled before your shields are down.

Does the bugs in AI make me stop playing? NO! They are called bugs so they will eventually be removed. But at least make the pain of loosing a ship hurt less and make more sence in what you loose and what not.
For me there is no logic in keeping engineering mats but losing scan data/bounty claims at ship destruction.
To avoid exploiting the keep scan data at ship loss, a black box can drop containing all data/enegineering mats which you can pick up with-in a given time.
This way it is not possible to fly out many 1000 light years and selfdestruct for an easy way home.

I would say: People keep your patience and show a little bit more love to people who are not playing the way you are because diversity is wat makes us humans. And lets trust the devs to solve the problems.

If they allowed exploration data to survive, people could go out thousands of ly's, get destroyed, and turn in their data and be home for dinner with very little risk.

It's just like why the Detailed Surface Scanner is a quarter-of-a-million while the Kill Warrant Scanner is only 14,000cr. Planets don't fight back, so getting extra credits for scanning is inherently less risky than combat.

I agree, it's not logical from an in-game reality perspective, but then neither is respawning at the last station you were at, no matter how far away, after ship destruction. Not having air traffic control or autodocking mandatory doesn't make sense, either, but they want people to enjoy the experience of piloting their ship. In reality, you wouldn't leave such things to the pilots because the risk of failure and the cost of both lives and materials would be too high.

The whole Skynet NPC/psycho-killer pilots wouldn't be a regular occurrence, either. The economy couldn't survive if: miners were constantly pirated/destroyed, and traders as well. Exploration would have more impact in terms of growth and expansion, and be highly lucrative while also highly risky simply due to natural dangers. And there would be far more serious consequences/penalties for committing murder, as well as unsanctioned interdictions (which is an attack, really).

So, yeah - there's a whole slew of elements that would need to be addressed to make the game make more sense. Psychotic NPC bugs are the most immediate to address.

I've been hearing a lot about the new AI and I honestly haven't had any issues myself.

I don't consider myself to be a particularly good pilot but I have yet to lose a ship.

Now I'm not doubting that some folk are having issues so I'll just describe my experiences so far with the new AI.

T-9

I've been trading successfully in my T-9 since the new AI was rolled out. I've made in the region of 50mill credits over a week playing very casually.
During this time I've been interdicted numerous times and every time I submit turn to face the NPC, boost past him and engage supercruise. I've lost my shields a few times but have never gone below 92% hull.

Vulture

As with the T-9 I've been interdicted a fair bit but following the above technique I have yet to even lose shields.

I've done quite a few Nav Beacons for bounty hunting and have on occasion gone down to about 60% hull and on one occasion a broken canopy but still managed to engage supercruise with ease.

My closest shaves have been with threat 4 US' when it always becomes obvious pretty early on that I'm not going well. Again I just boost away and escape.

Personally I'm enjoying the new AI as it's making the game more of a challenge.

They'd need to do something similar for miners, traders, pirates... It's not that it would be hard for them to do so much as it would be a major shift in their game philosophy, which seems to be: punish players for "failure". Insurance is only about 5%, not too bad. But it's the loss of ALL your data and materials gains that are punishing. That's where "the risk" is. I don't enjoy it, myself. I don't think "avoid destruction!" is a good design philosophy.

I GM/DM tabletop rpg's. I've learned that players want to achieve things, they want to DO things, not NOT do things or be prevented from achieving things. They don't enjoy losing all their progress, even while they understand that there needs to be something to overcome, something to risk. It's funny, and took me a long time to really get, but when I stopped destroying my players with OP foes and traps, death dungeons, etc., they were able to have more fun. They weren't allowed to run amok and do everything in god mode, but they were allowed to succeed more than fail, and failure seldom resulted in death.

I totally agree with that

I agree with most comments players above have made the AI definitely needs buffing down and the mechanics behind them needs looking at this new patch 2.1 has been nothing but an inconvenience to my gaming experience the AI is just broken and bugged.

The whole experience of this game is now becoming frustrating not enjoyable like it was before 2.1 why they messed with the AI to the point they have is beyond me it is like they have took the skill level and aggression of the AI from a low level 1 to making every AI i meet at ELITE ranking level 100 with nothing in between ridiculous.

I was fortunate to play the original on a zx spectrum back in the day and was looking forward to this new version i appreciate that the game needed buffing in certain areas to which i was looking forward to them sorting and enhancing my gaming experience of elite. However i now feel that instead of improving it for me they are ruining it by giving SKYNET control of the intelligence of the computer generated enemies to which there seems no escape and a very small chance of coming out of a battle without taking massive amounts of damage to your ship almost on every encounter they seem to sniper your canopy in one attack. The damage is not the problem the whole mechanics behind these SKYNET drones is they just harass you interdiction after interdiction and will hound you until you are terminated.

These SKYNET NPC'S also have the aggression of a Terminator on steroids to which you cannot seem to run from them and to my knowledge they no longer jump away from you if you can damage them it's like they know your a mere human and they are SKYNET and there is no probability in you surviving so they systematically want to obliterate the human player.
A computer vs the human mind the computer will always win due to it being able to process information quicker throw SKYNET in to the equation and that becomes a very deadly unforgiving intelligent minded NPC that seems to take very little damage but seems to have far superior weaponry than what you have almost every time you face off against one.

I trade in a ASP but this week have been doing the community goal gathering exploration data carrying no cargo or no bounty yesterday had information was taking back had nothing but interdiction after interdiction every time a NPC SKYNET controlled ship eventually got taken out by the same ship i had jumped 3 times away from no bounty on me no cargo damn thing was precise first few hits shields gone second lot of hits canopy cracked and all systems malfunctioning third lot i was ordering new ship.
There is no balance or reason in the new AI they just attack human players regardless whether you have bounties or cargo or like in my case empty.

This game is slowly becoming a train wreck there has to be a balance in these new skynet foes if these damn things have this sort of aggression level and skill not to mention op weapons what will it be like when a higher intelligence appears (THARGOIDS) the human player will not stand a chance.

The up date 2.1 was to enhance the game not ruin the player base players are now scarce due to most people not wanting to play a broken bugged game that leaves a sour after taste.
And this new engineers up date is not the best grinding to find parts to up grade after you have done the initial grind to find the engineer in the first place this game seems to be grind after grind and makes you wonder why bother.
Surely the dev's wanted more than this we all did we wanted elite to be epic not just mediocre if the AI did need buffing so be it but why to this level of aggression not everyone is a skilled pilot or veteran player the newer players would not stand a chance.
If you want elite to succeed there has to be a balance as at the moment this game just feel's broken and un playable.
Great way to encourage newer players by this last up date 2.1 in a few weeks no mans sky is released this will appeal to younger gamers not this mess of a game go back to basics sort it make this game great listen to your players for once.

Also the fact that all the data you collect why is it when skynet kill you you loose all this i thought computers backed information up so why the hell do i loose all the solar systems etc i have mapped ship yes assets yes data come on its stored on a computer so why do i loose it all things like this need looking at and sorting out i had high hopes for this waited 30 years for this newer version please do not let the players and fan base down lets sort this out.

Very dispondent today 5 pythons and at least 60 mil down not happy
AI way to aggresive and cant even turn in on a anaconda Somthing very wrong
Have had to sell my weapons to stay in the game now my fire power is way down
Cant even run away from a conda
Same problems as the ver 2.1 upgrade
Need a rebate to continue
Please sort this mess out

So, I thought "let's go back into my ASP" and was shot on my first flight (with six guns, 5A shields with 2 boosters)...
5A was perfectly adequate for an ASP Explorer before 2.1 but that apparently is no longer the case. When 2.1 came out I was flying an ASP with 5A shields and 3 boosters and was getting pummeled continuously. I finally noticed that 5A wasn't enough for 580t of ship mass and upgraded to 6A shields. My experience has been much better since. I still have to run from bigger ships with skilled pilots but I've been able to hold my own with lesser NPCs in any ship and even Elite pilots in smaller combat ships.

The best tip I came across, and I'm sure it has been mentioned here time and again, is to submit to the interdiction, boost your shields to max, and head directly at your attacker while the FSD is recovering then jump to another system as soon as you can. Good luck!

Good tip and it is true. Since 2.1 I learned to interdict, and run. And i am even so good at it that I do not die so often anymore. Still, since I started Elite, I first gave up trading, as it was to hard due to the constant INETRDICTION. Then I gave up mining because it was to hard due to constant INTERDICTION. I can go to anarchy systems, RES places etc. which is all exciting and playable, but as soon as I want to go home to a station, I have to run from INTERDICTION. The only thing I do nowadays is do 1 boom mission, or take the best cargo request run and earn between 50k and 80k each ride. Then, after 20 succesfull trips and succesful running from INTERDICTION, I fail on one INTERDICTION and loose 1,5 million on insurance.

Today, I had to spend five hours getting the money back from one INTERDICTION. I am so quickly loosing the Elite feeling and still I want to keep on to it. But is is really no fun anymore. Since 2.1 I have gone back from a total worth of 35 million to 21 million and am now almost bancrupt.

So, trading is out for me, mining is out for me, bounty hunting was never for me (already got me killied many times), so all that is left is being an errand boy and learn to flee even better (is this Elite 2016? learn to run??? Never had that in Elite 1984...)

And i am quickly loosing ships, money and goodwill... 21 days after this thread started and where is the new feedback?

Before ruining yourself, what about getting a cheap ship for the time until it gets fixed (hopefully)? It would keep you alive (on a cash basis) for a longer time. Just an idea. I am struggling with the interdictions, too. I parked my ship since start of last week.

I should also note that I have been using VoiceAttack with a good deal of success. That has made the constant control adjustments needed to be successful in the 2.1 New World Order much easier and I highly recommend it.

Here's my current loadout that has been pretty good at cargo, combat, mining (after trading out Cargo Racks for mining gear), and running away:

There is no doubt the game has become much more difficult for us casual players, and more tweaks would be welcome, but before you lose all your goodwill try changing up your gear. Good luck!

Running away does not work.
I was interdicted 4 times in a 4000 Ls run by a Deadly Conda in my A class Python
6A shield gen
5A SBank
3A SBank
3 OA SBoosters
Heatsink
The first 2 times managed to escape taking little damage only to be interdicted again.
Conda had
Thermal weapons
Torpedoes
The third time he left as i was able to boost away, So I waited 10 min plus for my shields to regenerate as I only had one shield bank cell left, still 4000 Ls away,
Back up and guess what, same thing all over again only this time worse
Started to run but this time the kitchen sink was thrown at me
Used last shield cell then heat sink
Heat sink failed, now overheating
Cargo hatch failed
FSD failed
Shields down
Thrusters failed
Now from 80% 0% in 4 sec
11 Mil lost and a 1.2 Mil fine
This happened 5 times yesterday
I've trying to get my Conda to A class trading in my Python since 2.1 upgrade but have been going backwoods all the time,
I now have no more money and have been selling off my weapons to cover the ins cost , Now nothing left to sell but my ships.

This is supposed to be a game
So lets level the playing field give us access to these great weapons I have use the new 4A Beams on a cobra ,was not impressed as the cobra had enless shields, lost my conda testing is yesterday with 20 Mil insurance cost to 4 condas who took me apart
Make my Conda more maneuverable than a Cobra because this is the reality of it
My Python cant out run, out turn a Conda, something is wrong and it is not me, every thing was fine before the upgrade, I too come frome Elite on my C64 and play this game for pleasure, but lately it has been frustration, intimidating, and sending my blood pressure sky high
If this does not change back to the old days then this game is not for me anymore, Pity because I am addicted to it
