NPCs with faces

Ok, apparently I am not the only one who mourns the absence of actual NPCs/persons in the game. Apart from the feedback in this thread, there are many other threads in which the users state their wish to interact faces instead of text paragraphs:

starjump argues that at least the faction leaders / tier 1 NPCs should have faces / appearances that we could relate to:
"Suggestion: Portraits of the rulers and other VIP's"

The result of Fnools poll speaks a clear message: two thirds of the commanders want NPC faces!
"Was the lack of NPC faces a good idea?"

maboleth reminds us of the human touch that the portraits in "Frontier" gave the game:
"People faces like in Frontier"

astrologos voices the same complaint:
"NO full motion video character faces at stations? Even simple pictures?"

And one more from ARZUMATA, mentioning the same strange discrepancy of having NPC faces in a game from 1995, but not in it's successor from 2015:
"Depersonalised station services..."

And there are many more threads like these:

"Not a single visible human or other lifeform anywhere..!"

"It's all a bit... Soulless"

"faceless , human Alien FREE game"

"Player interactions with NPC / missions, dialogs and faces"

"FD, please make the game more personal!"

...

There is no shortage of users requesting NPCs with faces and interactions, I could go on and on with this list. These threads go back as far as early beta or even alpha, and people were still clinging to the hope that FD might just wait for the first release version to show there shiny NPC characters, but no, we are still interacting with menus and text paragraphs, only.

I am not even demanding to see those NPC faces immediately, but couldn't the developers at least give us a statement about their NPC plans for the future? Is that really asking to much?

I suspect that they are almost certainly on the charts. But of course it's a fair bit of work (not just the mechanics, but the artwork too), and possibly has not been a priority. And every time Frontier promises something, they are held to details and dates and keelhauled if circumstances cause them to have to deviate from that.

I absolutely agree with you. It definitely is a lot of work to get the artwork right. And I don't demand they give us NPC faces in the next one or two month, but instead I just want to know if they are happy with the current state of the NPCs or if they plan to do something about it in the future at all. I haven't seen a single official statement telling us we will actually see NPCs at some point down the road. If they'd at least tell us if there are plans to have NPC faces/portraits/3D models in the future (even if it's still years away), I would already ease up.

Non player characters are such an essential part of any game (no matter if its multiplayer or not) that it's almost grotesque to have to just talk to text walls and not see a single person in a game in 2015 (which, of all things, tries to simulate a whole galaxy with thousands of inhabited planets).

Sorry for bringing this up again, but I just found a video comparing some character creation systems in different games. Apart from the juvenile humor of the commentators and the fact that some of those characters creation tools seem to be quite old and wouldn't hold up to the visual quality already established in ED, I think the very first character creator in the video, who's game is sadly not mentioned, is pretty cool!

It can't be so difficult to license this character creator and but some random generator behind it, would it? (with some procedural parts to fix certain visuals basics for some prototype NPCs like work coats for scientists, uniforms for military, rags for pirates etc.)
Btw., anyone know the name of the game from which this first part of the video stems?

Another one from Black Desert. This is absolutely impressive! Watch it and tell me this would compromise the visual quality of ED. If anything, it would even improve it!

Edit: and for anyone who thinks these videos focus to much on sexy girls, don't you think they'd be appropriate for stations like this ;) :

Another one from EVE Online:

Yep, absolutely. I have a spare chair next to me in the Cobra. Would love a friendly face there.

That's a whole add-on pack just there and a potential continual revenue stream for additional, npc content.

And as some others already pointed out: Frontier and it's Cobra Engine are already capable of producing good looking character models, as proven with their unreleased game "The Outsider":

Hopefully they will put this to good use in ED, too!

It would be nice if players and NPCs had custom and randomly generated avatars. It'll make the galaxy feel much more alive. We still don't know what those celebrities in GalNet News look like.

Exactly! I suspect they won't implement character models for players and NPCs before the "walking-around [your ship]/[station]/[planet surface]" expansions come out, though, but at least having some stills of TIER 1 characters in the news would help a lot. FD could see it as a test run how their character models are received before letting them loose on general NPCs and player controlled characters.

or have voice over when approaching a station.

Welcome commander.
Attention commander, no fire zone entered.
Request accepted commander, have a good stay commander.

And ect. it would make the game so much more alive

If this was the third or fourth DLC (After EVA & Planetary landing) as an optional expansion, then sure. Otherwise, no.

I want all the tiers of the tree and a few lights up before I start adding tinsel.

Well, I don't say we need faces or character models right now, I'd just welcome a confirmation that they plan to have them eventually at all. I do think first person exploration (on ships, stations and planets) won't really work without character models and therefore it's likely we see them then at the latest. But after witnessing how some theoretically very intriguing features like the travels of Jacques’ Roaming station are kind of lazily implemented by just rebooting the server, I am a little afraid FD might come up with an idea where first person walking DLC works without any other persons around.

We talked many times about peoples and faces in game.
Game need it. Players needs it. Everybody need it. Now we have pure, similar to excel interface.

I hope stuff like this makes it, it would really bump up the overall feel of the game, imo.

Eve's Char Creation is amazing...I played the demo (but nothing further because of time I knew that game wasn't for me) and it just blew my mind.

Ironically there's not a single face in Elite Dangerous yet. All the celebrities on Galnet News are also faceless.

Exactly! Now imagine how crazy it would be to use such a sophisticated character creation tool like that from Eve to procedurally create NPCs! That could be mind-blowingly awesome! You wouldn't encounter the same 10 character models over and over and over again at every location in the galaxy, but instead have new individually and automatically created created character models wherever you go! (the combinations of visual features are nearly endless in those character creation tools like that from Eve). Those which represent persistent NPCs could then be saved and later reencountered somewhere else.

I so much hope FD will give us something like this instead of just a handful of handcrafted character models we meet all the time.
