Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

Nice find this eve after a little pootle round, a binary pair of earthlikes!

I have some more questions:

How do you go about exploring? Do you go to some Nebula etc and then scan those systems? Or do you do it like me and scan every system on the way?(every system that the routing makes me jump through)
Do you scan all planets or only those that are worth more money? How do you tell which ones are worth it without scanning them first (the system view can be helpful but I think I'd still miss good stuff)

Just take me through what you do when you explore pls.

Thanks in advance. This thread is very helpful!

NGC 6357 looms over (I think) my first literally "earth-like" planet. So far found lots of ammonia and water worlds, but after 400+ finally found earth-like.

NGC 6357 finally kreeping closer and closer :) after reaching it and scanning most of it's stars, finally starting to head back and see how much I get from this trip... Didn't think I'd say this but I already miss docking to stations :D

Yes, thank you nutter. I am now up and running as an explorer thanks to your useful advice, flying an Adder with a dodgy power set up to get 21ly jumps. I made 500,000 on my first trip out to about 400ly coreward of the edge of populated space. I found a neutron star and several water worlds. I'm a galactic explorer !

what did you do that in, I'm trying to trade and do missions to get enough money to get the gear to be able to start making that kind of money.

Does anyone know if reflective armor offers greater protection against heat?
I was considering going with renforced armor for my next trip, just for peace of mind when out there more than anything else.

Already tried it, but noticed no difference. I wasn't very scientific about it though..

Thanks, great post, but please use something else than yellow as it's hard to read on a white background. Thanks the same!

I started in a Sidewinder minus the shields to get more cargo space doing cargo contracts out of Eravate. This let me earn the money to buy first an Adder then a Cobra (~350,000cr). Gradually pimped the Cobra until I was comfortable fighting in it and started just flying around dropping in on Unknown Signals and earning bounties. Some of them quite big. Biggest I had was an Anaconda with 87,000cr bounty on it.* I was promoted in the Federal Navy and ended up in PLX695, an invite only weapons producing system. Did more vigilante police work there and then decided to go exploring. I got 1.2 million cr for the Cobra. Fitted an Adder (badly it turns out) and went coreward as per the advice on increasing star density and started hitting G and K type stars** to find habitable worlds. Made 500,000cr on my first run.

*I found a chaff launcher on the Cobra helped enormously. And a point defense turret.
** I cannot over emphasise the importance of a Hertzsprung-Russel diagram for understanding stellar cataloging. Earths sun is a G2 yellow dwarf.

This is a fantastic thread and I wish I'd read it before venturing out in my Cobra thinking I'd make a tonne of cash... with a basic scanner and no surface scanner .
I also found out it was pretty easy to get yourself lost without knowing about filtering the map and couldn't rely on path finding sites to direct me back to what I called home!

If you are interested in a tool to help you see where you've been and how to get back "home" see my signature.
Necessity forced me to write a bit of code to process game log files to pluck out the system names ;)

I'm not getting anything back when looking at more recent logs, works on pre-release ones from Gamma and Beta. I think I recall Michael Brookes saying they were either removing or obfuscating the system name info from the netlogs at some point so they possibly have now? One to have a look at anyway, would be awesome if it could be updated to work with newer version of logs :)

What follows is a guide to exploring the galaxy. Please bear with me while I carry on my research and typing up of notes.
I intend to keep it up to date and will be recording to how to videos soon.
All will be collated in this first post, as will any community tips that I am not aware of.

So let’s get exploring...

<snip>

A lot more soon...

I am sure nutter is a common name but did you ever play WoW with that name?

Curious information, but I do long circle trade runs visiting 70-80 stations around the galaxy (rare trading) over a 2 days period, and I always scan systems with advanced and surface scanner, and I make quite a bit extra money even though I don't do exploration per se. So even as a side income, it's useful.

Hi Commander, I've used these colours to complement the default dark forum background... I'll take a look and see if I can find a colour that works better for both. :)

Hmm, I don't recall ever changing the background and it's white here. I'll have a look in my settings. Don't take it so serious, though, still a great resource :)

Edit: I checked now and I used the official Frontier skin, but I switched to the default now and it's black now. However, it still shows as using the official frontier skin, so it seems buggy. Oh well.

Interesting CmdrPSB as a friend of mine tried on his log files today and it worked fine, and I have files from yesterday that work just fine too...
I'll take a look when I'm home tonight though.
Do your log file names look something like this: netLog.1501041435.01 ?
Someone else mentioned they got theirs form the appdata folder, I got mine from a log folder in the install folder...

I think I've narrowed down the cause. I had a broken save for a while at the start of December. Before it broke the system info is present in the netlogs, after it was fixed it isn't. Sucks that for whatever reason it's been removed from my netlogging and means I can't use your tool, but a working game is more important :).
