NVIDIA users - How to improve in-game colours

I have just discovered something which improves the colours in Elite and all games.

I'm probably late to the party as usual and all you nvidia users already know this but...

..apparently, by default nvidia drivers output a limited RGB range from 16 to 235 which gives a washed-out effect.

To resolve this issue go to the nvida control panel and select Change Resolution.

In the bottom right is the option Output dynamic range - in the drop down menu select FULL and voila! - deeper blacks and more vivid, rich colours bringing new life to my TN monitor

I hope you find this helpful

As Fluffa points out below, this only applies to HDMI

Actually.. You kind of want to make sure that your TV/Monitor is set to the exact same setting, otherwise... Crushed blacks, blown whites, bleeding reds and oversaturated colours..

Having said that, 16-235 is normally a HDTV setting, so monitors should be set to full RGB to begin with. As AI said, just make sure your monitor settings are the same as the video card settings.

And that's where the Lagom LCD test pics come in handy - do you see squares 1-10 as nonexistent (black) or different shades of grey... :)

Note to be aware off, it also counts if you are using dvi->hdmi or similar, however there's an issue on both dvi->hdmi and hdmi->hdmi with dynamic range where it flakes out colours for some random reason, that said this was 2-3 official drivers ago, might be fixed, but if colours flip out, turn it off.

You want an earlier post/thread? :p

Here's the one you're looking for ;) :

All the more reason to sticky this tip in the Newcomer forum. It's the sort of info someone wont even know is a potential problem, you know, like a newcomer might miss.

Based on the differences I am seeing, and having 1800 hrs in the game, I think there should be a warning pop up when you start the game for the first time. It should make you aware of this setting and give you two choices. 1. Ignore. 2. Change setting (yeah, I know it can't do this). If you choose 'ignore', it gives you an electrical shock to your genitals for being stupid.

Some TVs may have some small issues with it. But its no more trouble than just disabling it again.

Monitor needs to support 10bit, very few does. So sounds like a hogwash post ;)
Dynamic range isn't the same as bit, 12 bit range, is also something you can enable, separately from dynamic range, dynamic range + 12 bit really makes things pop, for me a bit too much some times, to the point of feeling artificial.

Any disadvantages to doing this?
Sorta/kinda, things DO become darker, which can lead to the background 'fog' in Elite becoming less visible, but on the other hand, for example the icons for planets and such which uses shades of white and black, they will become clearer.

All I want to know is, will it improve anything if I start using hdmi instead of dvi? I'm currently using dvi as obvious and don't want to bother if it won't.

I don't think going to HDMI from DVI will improve anything, more likely it will cause you to need checking out if your GPU & display agree with each other about the colour range.

Actually, I decided it wasn't too much of a hassle and tried it for myself. Here are the results!

Provided you set your display to sRGB mode, HDMI with this setting enabled has immediate effect towards the better.

However(!), DV-I with the monitor in standard mode has overall better quality provided you use proper color adjustment. Color density and gamma correction works wonders.

So, if you are using dv-i, playing around with color, brightness, contrast and gamma settings lead to better results than hdmi with full range dynamic color.

Also my monitor has 1ms latency on dv-i but up to 5ms over hdmi so it's pretty obvious what I'm going for.
