Oculus Rift 0.7.0 SDK

In conjunction with what they've said previously - "We’re working with Oculus to try and resolve this and will let you know when there is news on that." - and the fact the tweet says "still working with Oculus"... well, you can do your scary conspiracy, abandoment dance but the rest of us can read it for what it is. :)

If you read the thread (okay.. 6 pages.. so a bit long), you'd have noticed that my personal theory is that Frontier waits for the release of the 1.0 drivers (announced for november 2015). If would definitely make sense. I was just commenting upon the fact that "we're still working with Oculus" doesn't say anything about the future of Oculus support (let alone of DK2 support)

The simple answer is that Elite still works fine with 0.5.1 and as we are so close to a final release it would be pointless for FD to throw resources into updating to anything else.

Like I said in another thread, I took a huge positive outlook from that announcement

"We are invested in making the world’s best VR experience with Elite: Dangerous, and will remain committed to VR."

That's a bold statement to make and one I look forward to experiencing

Karnath, if you haven't experienced E : D in VR and get the chance, then by all means DO IT! It's honestly mind blowing how suddenly the cockpits and bridges make sense, suns and gaz giants look ... well .. BIG, and mining becomes suddenly heart attack inducing when you realize how incredibly massive those previously puny looking rocks are. The only drawback is that for most people there is no going back to 2D afterward.

you are not wrong.

oh and just to add, CQC in VR almost feels like cheating ;)

I am no "Maverik" hotshot when it comes to PvP but in everyone of my games (admittedly not that many) in all bar 2 I came 2nd placed - often knocked off top within seconds of the end, I won another one (and came 6th in one, but lets call that a blip ;) )

this was me barely ranked against a few players who were far higher than me with more impressive gear unlocked.

I know exactly what you mean Dweezil, I'm a rift owner since January and i certainly wouldn't play it any other way

So, the question now is will we have a 0.7SDK compatible version of ED in the coming weeks? If not I'll have to wait for the Vive release.

Someone of FB linked to this page : https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=206.

I hate it to be that guy, but it doesn't sound good.

What is happening with Elite + Oculus Rift support?
Frontier Developments has been a long-time supporter of VR and Oculus Rift. Elite: Dangerous remains compatible with Oculus Rift SDK 0.5, and Frontier Developments will discuss support for future SDK revisions when the Rift approaches its consumer release.

I think it is safe to understand this as "no 0.7 patch". Also, it isn't really made clear whether they mean the consumer release of the SDK or of the headset. From the wording I have this feeling they mean the headset (And the following answers reinforces that feeling). So the next Oculus Rift specific patch would be sometime next year, IF they keep supporting Oculus directly (keep in mind that SteamVR is supposed to be Device independent)

Can I still use an Oculus Rift in ED after SteamVR is released?
Elite:
Dangerous is compatible with Oculus Rift SDK 0.5 and will retain its compatibility in the foreseeable future. Frontier Developments will discuss support for future SDK revisions when Rift approaches its consumer release.

The fact that this question is even asked makes it more probable that Oculus Rift support is NOT a given. Also "foreseeable future" is as vague as you can get.

So yeah .. looks bleak.

Well it certainly looks like FD won't be doing anything with the Rift until the final SDK is released! Isn't that November though? If so that's not too far away! I think they will definitely support the Rift on release, but i have to say, i'm starting to get the feeling that they like the Vive and SteamVR more at the moment! Often these things come down to software and API's... From what i'm reading SteamVR seems a more appealing API... at the moment.... There is still plenty of time for that to reverse which is why i think FD are hedging a little.

I'm happy for them to stay on the current SDK until the consumer version comes out. 7.0.1 breaks too many games for it to be useful at this stage and Elite works fine as it is.

I really fail to see what the rush is.

interesting info from DCS World

"What version of the Oculus SDK will be in 1.5
ED currently has 1.5 working with the 0.7.0.0 SDK and DK2, but there are known bugs that will continue to be worked on. The primary Oculus focus is on CV1 implementation."

1.5 is their new engine coming out anytime now, the fact that they have 0.7 running is impressive. IIRC 0.7 is direct mode only right?

so it is possible...

you lost me there. are you talking about E : D or DCS?

ED = Eagle Dynamics in this case who make DCS... so in short another company using completely different software can't also get SDK 0.7 to work correctly !

its simply interesting news regarding 0.7 and direct mode.
that is all.

the vr top contenders are Elite dangerous, dcs world and assetto corsa.
DCS being the first to use 0.7 and direct mode is very promising and interesting.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is running great in direct mode under 0.6.0.1 (and therefore 0.7), and the developer is also reporting "having some problems with getting it working with all the features with 0.7" (source)

It seems that 0.7 was a big enough change in the SDK to cause problems mainly for games where Rift support is additional and not built-in from the ground up.

Oculus Rift and 0.70 Runtime with Elite Dangerous

Anyone have suggestions on how to get Elite Dangerous to show up on the Rift now that the extended display option has been removed? Or do I have to wait for the developers to make a direct to rift display ability?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running Windows 10.

The state of 0.7 support is already plastered all over this forum. We're waiting for dev support who, in turn, sound like they're waiting for Oculus Rift to pull their finger out.

Downgrade to 0.5 and stay there. 0.6 is buggy and 0.7 is not supported and won't ever be as I understand it. FD are not working on any Rift enhancements until Oculus release CV1.
