Oculus Rift and colours in Elite Dangerous thread

If you look at the feedback from rift users, you would bet it is the top gripe about playing ED with the DK2......

...may be worth a poll? ;)

Nosh

While it is definitely high on my list, my top gripe is an unusable galaxy map. The text I have gotten used to reading since beta, and while it isn't nice its doable. Playing with the galaxy map being such a cluster in the Rift though really saps the fun out of playing. At least for me since I am trying to be an explorer.

Gray flicker -> Black smear -> Washed out colors

I have been having quite the issues with ED lately with my DK2. I originally noticed this a week ago, the black smear was out of control. After posting a thread about it, the answer seemed to be to make sure to restart the Oculus service before opening up the game. That seemed to have worked at first, but it seems to reset every time I alt-tab out of the game. Along with the black smear issue, I am experiencing a small amount of flicker (which happens randomly). The flicker is like quick flashes of a gray overlay that wash out the colors of the game, and a lot of the time the grayed out color wash will just stay there, the colors are still distinguishable, but the vibrancy is gone.

This isn't something that happens 'some' of the time. I wrestle with this every single time I play the game now. It seems mostly impossible to get the game to display correctly now. It is completely ruining gameplay for me at this point.

Edit: I would like to also add that direct mode seems to work a lot better, but I do still see the gray flickering happen. Unfortunately, direct mode's performance keeps me from playing in that mode.

The grey flicker sounds similar to when head tracking is lost. Can I check if you have an Intel quad core processor?

I have an AMD FX 8120. I am well within range of the sensor bounds, but you are right, the color wash is very similar to what it would look like if I were to go out of bounds of the tracking sensor

Ah that rules out one reason ;) Are you running a single GPU or SLI?

I believe Intel hyperthreading and SLI are the most common reasons for flicker but those are ruled out.

I'll throw another couple of topics out to see if they ring any bells. There was a thread about the latest nvidia beta drivers causing lots of problems and people rolled back to the previous version. Maybe worth just for a quick test - disabling your main monitor in the nvidia control panel (sounds odd but others have reported improvements). Then I'm starting to run out of ideas :(

I haven't updated to the latest driver yet specifically because of the problems I have been reading about. I haven't tried disabling my monitor, and have read that it can increase performance. I will definitely give that a try when I get back home today. I'll report back with my results. Thanks!

You are very welcome, there are lots of great people in this forum - hopefully one will know :)

PS I don't think it's this but, sometimes when upgrading to a new ED release my ED settings have changed. Might be worth double checking that your ED refresh rate is still set to 75hz. With that in mind what in game graphic setting are you using (low/med/high) - have you checked what FPS you are getting in game? Good luck.

Perfect HUD colour settings?

Hi guys,

As we all know there's a way to tweak the HUD colour now, and green is ideal for the rift on account of the OLED screen having more green pixels than red ones. Now my question to you, my fellow rifters is as follows:

What exacts settings do you use?

I use a simple r0 1 0 g 0 1 0 b 0 1 0 setting but that loses the information that the HUD gives in colours. What I like is something that makes most of the HUD green but still allows you to distinguish enemy targets and such.

Had the same issue, you have to restart oculus service before lauching elite, solved everything for me. there's a little app named Oculus service manager google it and just do as i mentionned : restart service, then launch elite.

Have you tried using the dedicated power supply to the tracking sensor? That is meant to be one possible fix for 'flaky' tracking like what you described.

I have this slight super fast light flicker when i look up and down. It's like there is temporary loss of tracking. It's always at a certain angle when i look at the dashboard. And the weirdest thing is I only noticed it when i moved into a Cobra.
My CPU is AMD

Ah that's a good one I'd forgotten! Apparently helps if your PSU is struggling to power the USB port.

It sounds like a low-persistence problem. Try this solution, I know its not ideal but it will let you know if this is indeed the issue:

Set the rift to extended mode. Launch elite and run it in borderless window mode on your rift. If you still see the weird smeared blacks do this:

Launch Titans of space. Get in game, hit esc twice to bring up the options, and toggle low-persistance off, then on. Now quit Titans of Space and go back to Elite (It should have been left on this entire time).

Does this fix the issue?

People keep saying this but I still can't tell the difference. I've tried tons of settings and I never find the green text to be any better than the orange text, but changing the color screws up the whole color scheme of the UI and really ruins the game for me.

The best I can tolerate is making Red = White.

This one is working well for me. Green, but not bright green. Tried other greens but didn't like them until I found this one. I feel the text is much easier to read, and if you can downsample it's even better. Hostiles are displayed in red, neutral are light yellow, wakes and cans are green, and friendly are cyan.

<MatrixRed> 0.18, 0, -1 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> -1, 1, -1 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0.17, 0.31, 1 </MatrixBlue>

I have tried most of them and find this light blue / whiteish colour to be the best in the Rift...

<MatrixRed> 0.21, 0.29, 0.93 </MatrixRed> <MatrixGreen> 0, 1, 0 </MatrixGreen> <MatrixBlue> 1, 1, 1 </MatrixBlue>
