Oculus Rift & Windows 10 Thread

You guys are awesome! Lots of helpful information here. My new DK2 arrived today so now I can return the dirty, studio loaner I've been using.

If I recall correctly, when I installed the v6 runtime in Windows 10 the problem I had was that the service would not start/run.

Also upgraded to windows 10 from 8.1 without any issues.
I rolled back to the 0.5 runtime and updated my nvidia drivers to the latest and something is making ED run slightly better for me.

Beta looks like it improves on this slightly too and the stations look better (think there was another render pass done)

ED + DK2 Veteran here - BEST SETUP for WINDOWS 10 and NEW SDK ??

Title says it all. I've been away for a few months and am looking to come back. Using windows 10 and a Nvidia 980 Ti. Very strong gaming rig. I know that there are recommendations floating around here not to use the newest "stuff" (the new sdk and windows 10 wont work or something?)

Simply put, without downgrading my windows system (but willing to change to appropriate oculus "stuff" and sdk's) what is the best way for me using windows 10 to get back into good ol' ED with my dk2?

Thanks all!

I'm not a regular in here so hopefully I'm wrong, but as I understand it you'd have to downgrade Windows in order to run the older Oculus runtime (0.5 is recommended I think), the newer runtime isn't supported by ED but on Win10 you have to use the latest runtime.

I'm in the same position as I've been dodging the Win10 upgrade for months and having left my PC turned on unattended it decided it was going for it. I'm not going to restore to 8.1 straight away as I'm hoping there is a work around or at least a statement from Frontier that they will update ED for the Oculus direct mode. This may have happened, but I've not seen anything. As such I'm not purchasing Horizons until I know I can actually play the game. I can't go back to playing without the Oculus, it's just not the same.

No need to downgrade. Clean install of Windows 10, install 0.5.0.1 SDK and ignore compatibility messages. Install any current driver, thats it.

Help! Windows 10 + 5.0.1 looks like 16 bit colors (dark colors)

OMG! I was on Windows 7 - everything was great. Then Microsoft fooled me into upgrading to Windows 10.

Now I finally got the Rift working again (by installing 5.0.1 Oculus drivers, had 0.6.x previously).

It works, but the dark colors look TERRIBLE. What am I doing wrong? Is there a pro tip to fix this?

What's the native resolution of the DK2, btw?

I have a Nvidia 980ti graphics card.

Thanks a lot!

How did they fool you, was it the bit that said do you want to upgrade to 10 and you clicked yes rather than no?

As far as I know SDK 5 and 6 don't work with win 10. SDK 7 doesn't work with ED.

Microsoft didn't trick you, please don't say that, this is what can happen with new and improved stuff, some of the old stuff is not ready for it yet.

But there are people that do use the oculus so it should be fine? tried resetting everything to standard?

DK2 on Windows 10, SDK 0.5 and AMD card possible?

Hello VR community. I haven't played ED in a while. I did play it exclusively with my DK2 but content got a bit meh after a while and i saw it all.
Now CQC is almost here and horizons will follow soon soon wich means i will spend quite some time withg elite again.

I did however upgrade to windows 10.
Is there a workaround to run SDK 0.5 with windows 10 and an AMD Fury X?
There are reports of people running the DK on SDK 0.5 with Win 10 successfully but they all have nvidia cards.

Head on over to the Guide/Compendium for NVIDIA Users. The simplest tweak is to adjust the gamma contrast and brightness in the nvidia control panel (Raja's settings).

There is no workaround, 0.5.0.1 is not supported in Windows 10. What this means is that direct mode is broken. Install the 0.5.0.1 SDK, ignore the error message and the service and driver for the head tracker (but not the DK2) will still install fine and you can use the DK2 itself in extended mode (which your card will simply recognize as a plain old monitor).

I also find that the NVCP colour settings don't translate automatically into the game. You have to open the game, tab out, change the colour settings for the rift, change them back and hit apply then it's there in game. Annoying but not end of the world

Thanks. That is good enough as long it works. I played extended before and the experience was good. Sucks to have to decide between ED and games that are on 0.7 though.

Actually i just found out that you don't have do choose between the sdks. You can just simply stop 0.7 and run the old 0.5.

Deinstall 0.7 reboot and install 0.5 (ignore all errors)
Save the C:\program files (x86)\Oculus\Service\OVRServer_x86.exe to a different location
Install 0.7
Copy OVRServer_x86.exe back where it came from.
Rightclick, go to properties, then compability an set ist to windows 8 and run as administrator!
Reboot

Make a batchfile containing

net stop OVRService
"C:\program files (x86)\Oculus\Tools\DirectDisplayConfig.exe" off
"C:\program files (x86)\Oculus\Service\OVRServer_x86.exe"

Name it SDKold.bat for example
and run it as administrator!
A shell should open an your Rift should become second screen. (if not go to your screensetting and look if you have to extend your primary screen manually)
Don't close the shell!!!!!!
Start ED and change Grafic settings to secondary monitor and 3d to Rift (as normal)
Play and have fun!

To switch back to 0.7
close the shell
and use a second batchfile containing

net start OVRService

Name it SDKnew.bat
run it as adminstaror
and you are good to go again

Hope that brings back the all Windows 10 Commanders :)

Fly save!
